PowersChas was a skilled taxi driver and a reliable and loyal friend. He was a tough street brawler.

History(Hellblazer I #1) - John Constantine called Chas to help him deal with a "friend," junkie Gary Lester who was babbling about the demon Mnemoth. Chas gave Gary some heroin so he'd be coherent, and they learned that Gary had unleashed a demon tied to an African boy, and it was causing hunger attacks in the U.S. Constantine gave Chas the job of babysitting Gary while he went to investigate, even though Chas was more fond of the idea of dumping Gary somewhere.

(Hellblazer I #4) - John was on a lucky streak because of the universe's current synchronicities, and he used the opportunity to win at pool and off-track betting. He even let Chas win at slots for his loyal service. Late that night John needed Chas' car to drive to Liverpool and rescue his niece Gemma, who'd been taken in by a serial killer. Chas' wife complained, but Chas knew he was still in John's debt.

(Hellblazer I #6) - The religious Resurrection Crusade and satanic Damnation army both wanted to claim John Constantine’s friend Zed, so they decided to go on the lam. John called up Chas and had him drive them to Camden and the antique shop of John’s friend Ray Monde.

(Hellblazer I #18) - After a trip to the English countryside with the Freedom Mob, Constantine returned to London. He was lucky to have Chas’ services, because the papers accused him of satanic murders Nergal committed, and he had to stay low. John reckoned that Chas was only loyal because he was simple, and afraid John could turn him into a toad.

(Sandman II #3) - Dream of the Endless contacted Constantine, who was last in possession of his pouch of sand. John remembered that his ex, a druggie named Rachel had it, so he called Chas to drive them to her flat. Chas was spooked by Dream, and protested that John was pushing his luck. At the flat, John told Chas to keep the motor running and leave at the first sign of trouble. The ever-loyal Chas protest, but John said his missus already hated him, and he didn’t want her to have more reason to.

(Hellblazer I #21) - The Freemasons summoned the primal fear god Jallakuntilliokan, and John thought it might be the end of the world. He had Chas drive him to Scotland so he could meet with his love interest Marj before the end of times. John told Chas he’d be free of his obligations because at the end times there’d be no more need of taxis. Chas was confused, and asked John if there’d be use for buses instead.

(Hellblazer I #28, 29) - Convinced by Constantine that the world was going to end, Chas sold his taxi and took the missus to the Bahamas. When John saved the world, Chas had to explain to his furious wife why he no longer had a career. Chas managed to find work at Eddie Morgan’s betting shop, and despite his better judgment, let Constantine use a room upstairs to crash in when he needed it. One morning Chas was jumped by a terrified knife-wielding John, and socked him. He wanted to know what John was afraid of, worried he was mucking around with demons again. John was being hunted by the serial killer the Family Man, and Chas wanted to help, even though his wife had just made clear that she wanted Constantine gone. John wanted a gun for defense, so Chas called one of his black-market connections, and set up a meeting. While John was away, the Family Man showed up, and when Chas refused to acknowledge that he knew John the killer beat him bloody, and sliced his ear. John returned, and Chas was furious at him for not warning him, but he realized he couldn’t return home all busted up, so agreed to help John with the villain. That night Chas made a scene about kicking John out, and when the Family Man followed him to Chas’ cousin Norma, Chas tailed him, recording the nearby hotel he took up residence in to keep a watch on John.

(Hellblazer I #44) - Chas couldn’t get a loan from any respectable sources, so he borrowed from gangster Mike Adams to afford a minicab. John rang him up for a ride to London, and chastised him for taking money from someone who’d break his legs. Chas was infuriated, and told John it was his fault he was in the situation he was in, and that he was sick of John bossing him around like a child. They reached their destination, and coldly said goodbye. Chas found a note in his backseat from John, who apologized for stringing him along, and gave him some winning bets he’d divined with magic so he could get back on his feet. The note was his way of saying goodbye, as he was dying of cancer, and fleeing from the Devil. Chas broke down in tears.

(Hell blazer I #46) - Chas walked into a diner, and was shocked to see John still alive, but not phased when John didn’t offer an explanation. He grumbled, cursed, and got a cup of tea.

(Hell blazer I #47) - Chas and his fellow cabbies met John at their favorite pub, the Northampton Arms, for some friendly poker. Chas was happy to report that he had paid back Adams, and was thinking of starting a delivery business using his cab to get people their favorite pub and café foods. He thought it was a brilliant idea, but John and the others scoffed at him, which he didn’t take too well.

(Hell blazer I #48) - Chad told John that the Northampton Arms had been set ablaze, and Lauren died in the resulting explosion. John correctly suspected the handiwork of Mr. Carson, who’d sold the Arms and wanted it demolished for a potential buyer. Chas asked if John was off to play judge, jury and executioner, and John remarked that he wasn’t that dim after all.

(Hell blazer I #49) - John met the pagan spirit the Lord of the Dance on Christmas Eve, and decided to show him he still had a place in the modern world by taking him to a pub. Chas was there, not intent on returning home to his wife anytime soon. After bawdy song, dance, and drinking, and a few embarrassing stories from Chas’ past, the celebration was over. John dragged Chas home, left him on the doorstep, and ran like the wind when Chas’ wife started screaming at him.

(Hellblazer I #177) - John had Chas drive him around London, looking for clues to find his missing niece Gemma. His first stop was Scrape Gillis, an occult pawnbroker, and John went to his shop to find it burned down, and word was that Scrape was dead. Chas thought it ironic that John was supposed to be dead too, so he'd have a lot to talk about with Scrape. John was still unimpressed with Chas' non-existent sense of humor. John followed several other leads that went nowhere from Tate's to the London underground, and Chas occupied his time using a book on tape to learn French. John decided to send Chas home before his wife had a fit.

(Hellblazer I #181) - The demonic Lukhavim were after John Constantine's soul, and took Chas, Rene and their granddaughter hostage. As usual Renee was sorry Chas had ever met Constantine. Using his friend as bait the Lukhavim lured in John Constantine, but he manage to defeat them.

(Hellblazer I #250) - John visited Dave's Poker Bunker to seek refuge from the holiday festivities. He witnessed Chas get his clock cleaned in hold 'em by Barry the Bandit. John assured the bartender he was there to watch, not play, because he'd been banned for being spooky, and winning too often. Hard-nosed Barry played a desperate old man, and John sensed the man needed the money to buy his daughter, a runaway, out of slavery. The Christmas spirit moved Barry the Bandit to fold on a winning hand and throw the game, and John said he was impressed.

(Hellblazer I #253) - John had Chas wait at the Granby to see if his new girlfriend Phoebe would show up after he'd exposed her to a magical scab curse. Chas called to say she never showed up, and John knew their relationship was over.

(Hellblazer I #258) - John visited Chas after Phoebe was killed by the ekkimu Julian. John said he felt like his heart had been ripped out, and he planned to try and resurrect Phoebe, having promised himself his life wouldn't destroy hers.

(Hellblazer I #259) - Chas drove John to Violet Cottage so John could try another tack of bringing back Phoebe. Chas reminded him that the cottage was Renee's pride and joy, and asked him to be respectful and smoke outside. Renee showed Chas the headlines that accused John of Phoebe's murder, and she reminded him to stay away from him. Chas reminded her that they owed her for helping their Tricia, and Renee fired back that she wouldn't be surprised if he was behind her coma in the first place. John failed to raise Phoebe because his actions had consigned her soul to Hell, and he burned down the cottage, but didn't tell his mate.

(Hellblazer I #260) - John had to avoid the police, because he was the main suspect in Phoebe's death, and Terry Grieves' men were after him for Epiphany being in a coma. John told Chas he was going to India using forged documents to escape his problems, and Chas said he never took responsibility for his actions. Grieves blew up the Granby, and kidnapped Chas, torturing him until he called John begging for help. John promised to save him, but he was lying, and still tried to make his flight. His documents were suspect, so he had no choice but to flee, and convinced Grieves to free Chas. Chas wanted Grieves to promise he'd not hurt John, but Constantine assured him he'd take care of his own problems for once.

(Hellblazer I #267) - John was losing his mind, and visited Epiphany's lab in a fury, suspecting her of using a potion on him. She wanted him to get out, and he saw red, beating her to a pulp. After getting seriously drunk John woke up, and barely remembered what happened. Parts of his apartment began disappearing, and when he ran outside the buildings and streets vanished around him. He called Chas, begging him to pick him up, and worried he might have killed Epiphany, but the street opened up, swallowing him, and he woke up in the hospital ward. The doctors said he was found ranting in alien languages, and doped him up because of his history of mental illness. Chas went to see Epiphany, and was shocked when he saw what Constantine had done to her. He asked her if she knew anything about reality starting to disappear, and she told him to get lost and tell Constantine to crawl into a sewer.

(Hellblazer I #269) - John escaped from the asylum with the help of Shade, the Changing Man, and rang up Chas, but their conversation was cut short when John began seeing reality disappear in front of his eyes again.

(Hellblazer I #274) - Nergal .possessed Chas, and had him try to run John and Epiphany over with his cab, but a synchronicity spell gave John luck enough to dodge. Chas crashed, and the streering column ruptured his groin, so he had to be taken to the hospital. Chas didn't want any more children, but still bemoaned the fact that he was now incapable of fathering any. Chas' wife once again told John to stay away from her husband, but Epiphany told her they were getting married and wanted Chas as the best man. Chas' jaw dropped to the floor.

(Hellblazer I #275) - John went drinking with Chas, Faeces and the ghost of Brendan Finn before his wedding. Faeces said John had changed because he looked happy, and he liked the gloomy Constantine. The Demon Constantine took John's place at the wedding, and Nergal used Afghan mobsters to raid the ceremony, but John took care of his doppelganger and killed Nergal. Chas asked Renee if marriage had changed him, and she replied that she was the same idiot she'd fallen for.

(Hellblazer I #277, 279) - John and Epiphany made love, but she became upset when the bandage on his hand came off, revealing his mutilation. John was surprised that it took her aback, but she said she didn't want to talk about it. John confided in Chas, who told him there had to be something wrong with Epiphany, after all, she agreed to marry John. John contacted the gods of car wrecks to find someone recently dead so he could get a new thumb. The dead man's thumb wanted revenge fore Terry Greaves killing him, so Chas drove John to his father-in-law's.

(Hellblazer I #281) - John was in trouble from a demon that Gemma yhad sicced on him, and Epiphany asked Chas why he wasn't there to back him up. Chas said Johnm was calling on him less, finally realizing that Chas appreciated his wife. Chas thought Epiphany was mellowing John out.

(Hellblazer I #285) - Chas drove John to the home of his old record exec Rick, who'd sold the Book of Demons to Marc Bolan. The witch Tamsin currently had the book and was using it to go after Gemma, so John wanted to figure out how she'd gotten her hands on it. Chas responded that he hated Bolan's music because it was too commercial for him.
