Powers: When Billy Batson spoke the name of the wizard Shazam he was transformed by a bolt of magic lightning into Captain Marvel. As Captain Marvel he possessed the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. Saying Shazam again turned him back into Billy Batson.

History: Billy Batson when his archaeologist parents were killed on a dig in Egypt by their assistant Theo Adams. Billy was separated from his sister Mary and put in the care of his uncle Ebenezer. Ebenezer stole the boy's trust fund and put him out on the street. Billy survived as a newsboy, and one day a stranger led him into the subways, where Billy got aboard an unusual train that dropped him off in a subterranean cavern. In the cavern he met Shazam, an ancient wizard who used his powers to battle evil for thousands of years. Shazam passed his powers onto Billy, who only had to say Shazam! to become the adult superhero Captain Marvel. Having passed on his powers, Shazam allowed himself to be killed by a falling block of granite.

Captain Marvel became the arch enemy of Theo Adams, who'd become the supervillain Black Adam. Marvel later reunited with his sister and shared a portion of his power with her so she could become Mary Marvel.

(Joker #3) - When Jack Ryder went missing because Joker had kidnapped him, Billy Batson filled in for a WHAM-TV news spot.

(Adventures of Superman #442) - Superman contacted Captain Marvel, Elongated Man, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman after his powers were stolen by Psi-Phon and Dreadnaught, a pair of alien invaders. They stole the powers of Marvel and the others, but the amount of energy it took overloaded them and they surrendered.

(Superman: The Man of Tomorrow #4) - Captain Marvel and Shazam detected a mystic presence in Metropolis and recruited Superman to find out what it was. The presence was Satanus, who knew Shazam was on his trail, so in an effort to distract him he reactivated his demonic DMN addicts. Captain Marvel and Shazam defeated the addicts and Shazam permanently purged the drug that caused their demonic possession. Shazam and Bibbo argued over who was stronger, Captain Marvel or Superman, so at Terrible Turpin's suggestion the two heroes put on an athletic competition broadcast from GBS with all proceeds going to the police athletic fund.

(Green Lantern III #72) - Captain Marvel went to the Fawcett Museum when Professor Tolemy took a mask from the new Egyptian exhibit and found himself possessed by Seti. Marvel was joined by Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, who'd come to Fawcett to receive advice from more experienced heroes like Marvel. Kyle was intent on a bang-up fight Marvel kept insisting they talk to Seti. The fight went against the heroes, but Marvel convinced Tolemy to free himself from Seti's command, then imprisoned Seti back in his mask. Kyle was impressed with Marvel saving the day without throwing a punch, and continued on his quest to meet and learn from other heroes.

(Adventures of Superman #522 (fb)) - Marvel, Superman and a number of heroes went to Metropolis after it had been decimated during Zero Hour. The heroes contained a group of DMN junkies and then set about rebuilding the city. They couldn't finish the job in one day so Zatanna linked minds with Perry White and Superman to rebuild the city from their memories, using Marvel and the other heroes as a power source for her spell.

(Power of Shazam II #1) - Captain Marvel had been doing Shazam’s work for four years. He lived by himself in an efficiency in Fawcett City, renting as the “Batson family”, and his inattentive landlord never noticed that he was a minor living by himself. Captain Marvel was having trouble in school, constantly being late or absent, because he was fighting evil. As he flew to school he saw his wealthy cousin Sinclair, son of Ebenezer, dedicating a new WayneTech facility. The villainous Ibac appeared, and set off a detonator that destroyed the building. Marvel saved his cousin from the blast, and a surviving officer inside the building. Sinclair was fascinated by Marvel’s resemblance to his uncle, and invited him to a dinner party. Billy went to school, and Uncle Dudley covered for his recent tardiness, telling principal Wormwood he’d been helping Dudley unload lunch supplies. After class Dudley followed him home, but suffered a heart attack. Billy changed to Marvel, and flew him to the hospital, and while near conscious Dudley called him Billy. Marvel realized the reason Dudley was constantly sticking his neck out for him, to facilitate his crusade. Marvel was ill received at the dinner party, lacking the graces of high society. After avoiding the attentions of Beautia Sivana, who was still enthralled with the hero, he made his way to the buffet table. The only real reason he accepted the invite was for the free meal, hard to come by for a poor boy. Shazam summoned him to the Rock of Eternity and scolded him for not taking his job seriously. Marvel let him have it, reminding him he was a kid with the responsibilities of an adult, and then some. He also lashed out at the wizard for not finding his sister Mary. Shazam told him that if he couldn’t dedicate himself to the job, he’d make him a child again, and took away Marvel’s powers. He returned to the party as Billy, and was about to be tossed out as an uninvited urchin, when a note slid under the door from Marvel’s old enemy the Arson Fiend. The Fiend claimed to share the same employer as Ibac, and told Sinclair he must die. A massive fire broke out, and Billy found himself powerless to help anyone.

(Power of Shazam II #2) - Blaze sent Billy a vision of all the people he’d failed to save. Billy had long agonized over his fear that as a child he wasn’t ready for the manly job of superhero. Sinclair snapped him out of it, and Billy remembered that as a child Ebenezer had him and Mary play in the wine cellar so they wouldn’t break his valuables. Billy knew the location of the dumbwaiter to the basement, and even though Sinclair still denied that he was family, followed him. Billy gladly destroyed one of Sinclair’s bronze statues to open the wall where the dumbwaiter was, and got everyone to safety. He was secretly pleased to smash things in the house that was his inheritance, and that he was never allowed to enjoy. Shazam realized how intelligent and resourceful Billy was, and restored his powers. As Captain Marvel he battled and disabled the Arson Fiend. Ebenezer had secretly hired the Fiend to garner more sympathy for his son, but the Fiend got out of control, and tried to kill him. Marvel was upset with Sinclair talking to a newsteam and taking credit for Billy’s heroism, but he simply accepted that his uncle and cousin were jerks.

(Power of Shazam II #3) - In order to make ends meet, Billy changed into Captain Marvel, donned civvies, and got a scab job as a trucker at Raboy Industries. Gangster Pretty-Boy tried to threaten him for being non-union, and being on the docks while he was conducting business, but Marvel managed to get him to offer money to go away and sleep in his truck. He awoke to Pretty-Boy throwing “Muscles” McGinnis off the pier in concrete shoes, and managed to save McGinnis, who was actually an undercover agent. The gang he’d infiltrated, run by “Stinky” Printwhistle, was going to abduct a child, and when he balked they marked him for death. Billy woke late for school, and wa sin fear of being punished when he met Sterling Morris, who was having a meeting with Miss Wormwood. Morris wanted Billy back as a roving reporter, and Miss Wormwood agreed on the condition that Morris get him a tutor, and Billy keep up good grades. Billy emceed a statewide spelling contest, with finalists Percival Pill, Freddy Freeman, and Mary Bromfield. Pill won, but Billy took a shine to Freddy and Mary, and invited them to lunch. Sinclair Batson, Mary’s contact in Fawcett, told him to stay clear of the society girl. “Stinky” changed into IBAC, and abducted Mary and her caregiver Miss Primm, but Billy changed into Marvel and pursued them. IBAC was sick of being thrashed by Marvel, and eagerly engaged him in combat, but as usual Marvel defeated him. Mary said her thanks, and Marvel couldn’t help but think that she reminded him a lot of his sister.

(Power of Shazam II #4) - With Ibac in prison, McGinnis moved into his territory, and he and Marvel agreed to help each other. They staged a fight in McGinnis’ club, making “Muscles” look like a credible threat, and McGinnis dug up some info on Mary Bromfield. Marvel now had her adoption papers from four years ago when she was Mary “Smyth,” and there was no doubt that the younger picture of her was the spitting image of his sister the way he remembered her. Changing into Billy he found the Mr. Takwy-Tawny doll they used to love as kids, and he had a vision of Tawny coming to life, and telling him to give his sister the doll to jog her memory. Mr. Dudley came to his apartment, telling Billy he was tired of him ducking him, and that he knew his secret. Dudley was talking about the fact that Billy lived alone, but in a panic Billy admitted to being Captain Marvel, and begged Dudley to keep his secret. Billy went to the opulent Bromfield house, and was greeted by Miss Primm before Curly and his gang, who were still intent on kidnapping Mary, knocked him out. Mary wandered out of her room, and after seeing the Tawny doll she had a vision of Tawny telling her to remember her childhood, and say the magic word Shazam. Mary turned into Mary Marvel, and after Miss Primm freed Billy, he changed into Captain Marvel, and they went after Curly’s gang. Captain Marvel found that his powers were diminished now that Mary was sharing his magic. They rounded up the criminals, but not before the villains shot Miss Primm. She revealed that they had been blackmailing her because she was the sister of Theo Adam, the man that killed her parents. Captain Marvel told his sister they had a lot of catching up to do, but first they were going to visit the wizard Shazam.

(Superman II #102) -

(Power of Shazam II #5) - Shazam and Captain Marvel summoned Mary Marvel to the Rock of Eternity. Shazam was in wonder that he’d scoured Hell itself for Mary, but it was she who came to find her brother. She admitted that she just wanted to be plain old Mary Bromfield again, but Captain Marvel insisted it was a good thing that she was a hero like him now, and that they were a family again. Shazam cautioned his charges that they were now sharing his power, so when they went into action simultaneously, their powers would be halved, and he told them not to take this lightly.

(Power of Shazam II #6) - Billy covered a baseball game featuring the Binder Marvels versus the Fawcett-Tech Trojans. Freddy Freeman played for the Marvels, and his hotdogging won the game. Billy was in awe of Freddy, he was popular, smart, good at sports, and a heartthrob for the young ladies, but Billy couldn’t be jealous because Freddie was such a good guy. Freddie’s grandfather invited Billy to the post-victory celebration of milkshakes and hamburgers, but Billy soon had to split, changing into Captain Marvel to pose as his uncle Eben so he could cash his WHIZ radio checks. Captain Nazi, recently pulled from suspended animation by his brother Wolf, tried to rob the bank. Before anyone could get hurt Captain Marvel saved the day, locking Nazi in the bank vault, giving the patrons time to remove themselves from danger. Nazi escaped, and commenced a battle with Marvel over the opean seas. Nazi was exasperated, his arrogance could not handle someone he couldn’t dominate, and when Marvel landed a punch that knocked him near a fishing boat, he saw a chance to retreat. The fishermen were young Freddy Freeman and his grandfather, and thinking Nazi a drowning victim, they helped him aboard. He flung Freddy’s grandfather into the sea, and snapped Freddy’s leg and spine before doing the same to him. Marvel caught up to Nazi, and was horrified by what he saw, but he chose to save Freddy and his grandfather instead of pursuing the villain, who escaped. At the hospital, Freddy was found to have spinal cord damage, and his grandfather had slipped into a coma. Not knowing who to turn to, he called Mary for solace.

(Power of Shazam II #7) - Marvel and Mary visited Shazam, telling him about their recently crippled friend Freddy, and asked him to share his powers with their friend. Shazam reminded them that his powers were not infinite, and that he had no idea how Mary realized to say the magic word to make herself a Marvel. They revealed that their stuffed toy Mr. Tawky-Tawny guided them along, and Shazam denied using an anthropomorphized tiger to do his will. The Marvels were confused, but Captain Marvel was sure that whoever sent Tawny, Mary was meant to share his power. Shazam urged them to find a solution for themselves, which Captain Marvel thought was an unfeeling gesture, and they left. Billy went back to his radio show, and Mary visited Freddy in the hospital. Billy broadcast a telethon, demonizing Captain Nazi, and asking for donations for Freddy’s medical bills. Sterling introduced him to his new tutor Beautia, who’d clearly volunteered hoping to get closer to Captain Marvel. Captain Nazi attacked Freddy in the hospital, flying off with him, and Mary and the Captain responded. Mart changed back into Bromfield, relinquishing her powers to Captain Marvel, who defeated Captain Nazi. The heroes used their Shazam lightning to get Freddy’s heart started, and took him back to the Rock of Eternity, where they finally realized that Shazam had given his blessing, but they had to be the ones to share their power with Freddy. By saying the name Captain Marvel Freddy turned into an idealized version of himself, tentatively named Captain Marvel, Jr. Shazam told him he now had the responsibility to fight injustice, like the other members of the newly formed Marvel Family. Although he was a demigod with Shazam’s powers, he’d return to being a cripple as Freddy. Freddy understood the drawbacks, and what was expected of him, and in his civilian identity Captain Marvel returned him to the hospital.

(Power of Shazam II #8, 9) - Billy was at WHIZ when the station conducted an interview with retired WWII heroes Minute Man, Bulletman and Spy Smasher. They related a story about how they battled Captain Nazi after the war, he was after the cargo of La Paloma, a freighter from South America, and although they busted up his Nazi ring, he made off with a cryogenic chamber. Jim “Bulletman” Barr emt Billy, told him he had a deep respect for his father, and left him his number if he ever wanted to hear some stories. Mary was visiting Freddy in the hospital when he got news of his grandfather’s death. He changed into Captain Marvel, Jr. and sought out the recently escaped Captain Nazi for revenge. When Mary tried to restrain him he belted her. He battled Nazi, who, losing the battle, set a fire during rush hour traffic. Jr. realized that although vengeance was his first instinct, he was indeed a hero, and had to rescue civilians from the inferno. The Marvel Family caught up to Nazi on Miami Beach, where he’d procured the other cryogenic chamber from the sunken La Paloma. It was supposed to contain Hitler, but when he opened it all that was left was a skeleton dressed in Nazi garb. The Marvel Family weren’t particularly interested in Nazi’s scheme, and simply told him he was going to face justice. The fight was taken out of Nazi, but Freddy attacked him anyway. Captain Marvel told him they worked for justice, and they’d see Nazi tried for his war crimes, but Freddy was intent on a revenge killing. The Marvels calmed Junior down, and after cuffing Nazi, they flew toward Crowley Prison. They were attacked by Black Adam, whose powers and memory had been restored by the demon Blaze. With their shared powers, they were no match for Black Adam’s might, and after snapping Captain Marvel’s arm he flew off to finish the hero. Junior battled the reinvigorated Nazi, who tried to flee. Mary realized Cap would need all his powers, so she tried to change back into Mary Bromfield, but her powers weren’t working because Shazam had been dragged into Hades by Blaze. Madame Libertine appeared, and after loosing Mary’s inhibitions, she realized that she’d only made Mary stronger, and the hero prevailed. Mary told Junior he had to relinquish his powers to save Cap. Cap was being buried alive under construction material by Black Adam, and Adam railed against Shazam, telling Cap he was doing him a favor by killing him, preventing Shazam from betraying him. Adam flew off satisfied, but once Cap’s powers returned he dug himself free, and vowed to find Shazam in Hades.

(Power of Shazam II #11, 12) - Captain Marvel, newly returned from the Underworld Unleashed affair, found Fawcett being attacked by the Seven Deadly Sins, who’d been freed by Blaze. He lured the Sins into leaving the civilians alone, and taking residence in his powerful body. He tried in vain to control their evil influence, but was met by Mary Marvel, and Uncle Dudley, who had just used one of Shazam’s spells to resurrect the powerful magician Ibis the Invincible in hopes of freeing Shazam from bondage. Ibis managed to free Captain Marvel of their influence, and make them solid, but he knew they’d need help to drag the Sins back to the Rock of Eternity. He gave permanent life to Tawky-Tawny, gave Shazam powers to Uncle Dudley, and summoned Captain Marvel, Jr. and Bulletman to their side. After an intense battle they returned the Sins to their prisons, and the heroes asked for Ibis’ help in freeing Shazam from Blaze. Just then the Rock of Eternity shook, as Blaze was trying to free Shazam’s old enemy the Three Faces of Evil. Ibis, already tiring of being awake, made a plan to end Blaze’s villainy. He sent Captain Marvel and Mary to Hades to free Shazam, and sent Cap Jr. and Bulletman outside the Rock of Eternity to delay her from freeing the Three Faces. He warned Cap and Mary not to trust anything they saw in Hades, as it was full of lying demons. Cap found himself in school taking a history test, but realized it was an illusion cast by demons. Mary was greeted by her deceased parents, but this too was a trap. After battling the demonic forces Cap freed Shazam, who told him he must explain their predicament, and how he knew Cap’s father. He told of how he’d battled his daughter Blaze through the ages, and how C.C. Batson, who he met during the Batson’s Malcolm Expedition of the 1940s, was his original choice of champion. Since Ibis was the one to contain the recent escape of the Seven Deadly Sins, Shazam had more power to share with his Marvel Family. Blaze and Black Adam defeated Cap Jr. and Bulletman. Dudley and Tawny joined the fight, but were soon overwhelmed. Mary found Sarah Primm in Hades, and freed her with the help of Satanus, sending her to Heaven. Black Adam no longer had a reason to be loyal to Blaze, and told Mary he owed her one. Shazam and Ibis cleaved the Rock, freeing the Three Faces, and at Shazam’s command Black Adam battled it. The Marvel Family forced the Rock back together, trapping Blaze alongside the Three Faces and Adam. Ibis took pity on Adam, and sent him to a distant star. Shazam had lost his zeal for guarding the Rock, and Ibis agreed to take his place while Shazam would live in Fawcett among the people. The Marvels returned home, and found Sinclair Batson burned to a crisp, yet still alive. Sinclair was a demonic construct created for Ebenezer, who dearly wished for a son, by Blaze. Mary saw an od caterpillar crawling toward Sinclair’s ear, and stepped on it.

(Final Night #1, 3, 4) - Superman organized a summit of superheroes, including Marvel, to listen to an alien named Dusk. She'd seen the Sun-Eater snuff out the sun of countless planets, and she was there to warn the heroes that the Sun-Eater was headed towards Earth. The heroes discussed different ways to deal with the menace. The Eater engulfed the sun, causing worldwide freezing, and the heroes learned that the Eater would cause the sun to go hyper-nova in under 24 hours. Luthor designed miniature forcefield units that would hopefully shield the Earth from the sun going nova, but they needed to be delivered via spaceship, and rookie hero Ferro piloted the ship. The sun started going nova before Ferro could plant the forcefields. Parallax sacrificed himself to dispel the Sun-Eater and reignite the sun.

(JLA #28-31) - Marvel defeated four elemental giants in Bahdnesia, and learned they were part of genie Lkz’s invasion on Earth. Shazam counseled Marvel to use the Wisdom of Solomon to end the war. As the JLA battled Lkz, Superman prepared to enter the 5th Dimension, but he was stopped by Captain Marvel, who sucker-punched Superman, knocking him out. He knew that if things went badly in the 5th Dimension Earth would need Superman more than him, so he chose to go in Superman’s stead. In the 5th Dimension he met up with Green Lantern and learned that Qwsp masterminded the war between Lkz and 5-D genie Thunderbolt, a battle that threatened to throw the 5th Dimension into chaos and destroy Earth. Representitives of the 5th Dimension arrested Qwsp, because only mischief was allowed in the 3rd Dimension, and he’d gone way past that. Back on Earth Marvel and Green Lantern convinced Thunderbolt and Lkz to merge into one being, ending their war.

(JLA #39) - Captain Marvel was among the legion of heroes summoned by the JLA to quell worldwide outbreaks of warfare that were incited by Mageddon.

Starfire became corrupted by the Spear, and Captain Marvel was forced to knock her out. His force of will contained the power of the Spear, and he used it to injure Asmodel, allowing Green Lantern Hal Jordan to become the Spectre's new host. Neron tried to wrest control of the Spectre, but Hal defeated him.

They traveled to Young Justice's Justice Cave, where the JLA and JSA's childish tempers erupted in a battle that lasted hours. After everyone was too tired to fight, the heroes made up and decided to split up to find a way to reverse Klarion's magic.

(Flash III #162) - Billy Batson, Flash and Linda Park attended the American Broadcasters Expo and went to a Ken Blackwell speech. "Blackwell" was actually a demonic simulacrum created by Felix Faust that implanted a post-hypnotic suggestion in the audience. The next day Linda and Billy went to the airport, and Billy learned his flight was rescheduled to 6:57. When Linda and Billy heard "6:57" the hypnotic suggestion was activated and they incanted a spell that turned the airport temporarily into a dark ages castle. Felix chose 6:57 because that was when the new Golden Spike Network was scheduled to go on air, and when the announcers announced the time the nation would incant the spell, turning America into a medieval land. Billy changed to Captain Marvel and helped Flash take Spike off-air to foil Faust, and then apprehended the villain.

(Superman: The Man of Steel #117, Action Comics #782) - Superman, Captain Atom, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and the Alien Alliance led an assault on Warworld and Brainiac-13's forces. The war ended when Superman created a Boom Tube that opened up to the beginning of time, which swallowed Warworld and scattering B-13's consciousness across all spacetime after the Big Bang.

(JSA #33-37) - The Ultra-Humanite used Johnny Thunder’s Thunderbolt to conquer the world, and imprisoned virtually every superhuman on Earth in stasis tubes, only reviving them when he needed mind-controlled slaves to serve in his personal guard the Thunderfront. Power Girl escaped Humanite’s control and joined up with a ragtag version of the JSA consisting of other heroes that broke out of the Humanite’s prisons. Power Girl and the JSA targeted the Mindsweepers who unwillingly aided Humanite in controlling the Thunderfront. After a battle with the Thunderfront the JSA used a device that disrupted the braincaps Humanite used to control the Mindsweepers and Thunderfront, leaving them unconscious but freed from Humanite’s mental domination. The JSA grounded the Thunderbolt with a lightning rod, taking away Humanite’s source of power, and the Humanite was later killed by Crimson Avenger II. Power Girl and the JSA attended the funeral of Johnny Thunder, whose body gave out after he was freed from the Humanite’s control. Marvel accepted Mr. Terrific’s offer to stay on as a member of the JSA.

(JLA #69) - With the JLA trapped in the year 1,000 B.C., Batman's contingency plan for a new JLA was activated. (JSA #40) - The Shadower took Kenton Elementary School hostage and demanded that Dr. Mid-Nite save the life of his grandfather, the original Shadower Vartan Kevork, who was deathly ill. Captain Marvel and the JSA were one the scene of the hostage situation, and Marvel used the wisdom of Soloman to deduce that the original Shadower wouldn’t survive the risky surgery. He had JSAer Star-Spangled Kid create a distraction and took the Shadower head on. He convinced the Shadower to give up after giving the elementary school children tell the villain about their life’s hopes and ambitions.

(JSA #41, 42) - Hourman told Marvel and the JSA he had a premonition of Black Barax attacking Tylerco to prevent them from performing an experiment that would prove the existence of tachyons. The JSA went to Tylerco, and while they were waiting for Barax Black Adam commented that he knew Marvel was infatuated with the Star-Spangled Kid. Marvel told Adam that one of the reasons he joined the JSA was to watch Adam, and he was almost convinced that Adam was still a villain. Barax arrived at Tylerco, and succeeded in wrecking Tylerco’s experiment. Barax used a futuristic weapon to short-circuit Marvel’s lightning, but when he broke free the lightning caused Barax’s time machine to malfunction. Marvel, Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific were taken back in time to the year 1944. The damaged time machine then caught Captain Marvel in a time rift that hurled him into ancient Egypt.

(JSA #43, 44) -<Egypt, 15th Dynasty> Marvel learned that Vandal Savage was trying to wrest control of Egypt from Khufu, and when his JSA teammates Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific traveled back in time to find Marvel he brought them to the temple of Karnak. Savage, Ank-Ton and an army of sand-homunbculi waged war on Karnak, and the battle went badly for the heroes. Nabu sent Captain Marvel and Black Adam to the Western Lands, the land of the dead, to petition Ra for help. Ra helped the heroes vanquish Savage and his army, but Marvel and the JSAers still had to find a way back to the present. Nabu put them in sarcophagi and put them in a magical sleep during which they didn’t age. When they woke up it was the present day, and they were released form the sarcophagi by Black Adam.

(JLA / JSA: Virtue and Vice) - Marvel attended the first annual JLA and JSA Thanksgiving celebration when the teams were called to Arusha, Tanzania to stop Doctor Bedlam from disrupting the Pan-African Conference on World Hunger. The JLA and JSA defeated Bedlam, but the attack was a ruse on the part of Johnny Sorrow to give him the opportunity to have Despero possess President Luthor, who was at the conference, and to have the Seven Deadly Sins possess members of the JLA and JSA. Marvel was possessed by Gluttony, and when the Seven Deadly Sins took complete control over the heroes they possessed they destroyed JSA headquarters and incapacitated the unpossessed JLA and JSA members. Under Gluttony’s control Marvel stole the thunder from Black Adam, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr. The other Sins also spread their influence across the globe. The JLA and JSA freed Marvel from Gluttony’s influence by forcing himt to say Shazam and turning back into Billy Batson. The magic Marvel stole from Adam and the Marvel Family flowed back into Shazam, who used this boost in power to re-chain the other Deadly Sins in the Rock of Eternity. Marvel and the other heroes defeated Johnny Sorrow and freed Luthor from Despero. Luthor graciously built the JSA a new hq.

(JSA #45) - Captain Marvel and the JSA provided security for the trial of Kobra for terrorist acts, which was necessary because hundreds of Kobra cultists were swarming the district court building where Kobra was being tried. Under Kobra’s orders the cultists threatened to activate bombs implanted in their bodies, killing themselves. Rather than allow the bloodshed the judge and Director Bones of the D.E.O. agreed to let Kobra go free for the time being. Black Adam and Atom-Smasher were outraged, and both agreed Kobra should have been killed for his crimes then and there. Marvel and the rest of the JSA vehemently opposed their viewpoint, so the duo quit the team. “Dr. Fate” then removed his helmet and revealed he was really the JSA’s nemesis Mordru.

(JSA #46-51) - Mordru tore into Marvel and the JSA and Obsidian soon arrived to cause further chaos. Obsidian sucked Marvel, the Star-Spangled Kid and Sentinel into the Shadowlands. Marvel and the Kid lost Sentinel in the Shadowlands, and Marvel was cut off from Shazam’s magic and transformed back to Billy Batson. The Kid was amazed to learn that Captain Marvel was actually the same age as her. They were caught in a part of the Shadowlands that Obsidian made into Sentinel’s personal nightmare, and after battling a shadow creature made to look like Sentinel’s deceased wife Thorn, they shared a moment and a kiss. They found Sentinel, who was nearly dead, in the company of the Shade. Billy thought that if they found Sentinel’s daughter Jade she could heal him by lending him some of her power. Shade teleported them out of the Shadowlands, and Billy and the Kid presented their case to Jade, but before she could help Sentinel, Obsidian attacked the heroes. Obsidian was defeated when Sentinel regained his Starheart and stripped Obsidian of his powers. Captain Marvel and the JSA then battled Mordru, and Dr. Fate imprisoned Mordru in the Rock of Eternity with Shazam’s help.

Black Adam destroyed the Steel Eagle, and the team was scattered across Khandaq. Adam planned on turning Captain Marvel to his side, so after defeating Marvel with some help from Brainwave, he had Brainwave read his mind and pick his vulnerabilities. Adam and Brainwave decided to use his affection for Stargirl to bring him over to their cause. Adam first tried making a rational argument for why Marvel should fight alongside him, but Marvel was having none of it. Marvel told Adam that Adam’s family would be ashamed to see what he’d become, so Adam slapped him, knocking him out. Marvel was freed y Stargirl and Atom-Smasher, who was afraid Black Adam was going too far. Atom-Smasher and Captain Marvel brokered a peace pact between Black Adam and the JSA. The JSA promised not to interfere further in Khandaq as long as Black Adam and his team remained within the country’s orders and didn’t try conquering any surrounding nations.

Captain Marvel visited the JSA and told them he needed them to come with him to Khandaq. On the flight over he tried to have a word with Stargirl, but she asked to be left alone. In Khandaq the heroes had little luck battling Eclipso and the Spectre, and Black Adam resented their presence and began fighting them. Spectre only stopped his attacks when Atom-Smasher told him he’d accept the Spectre’s judgment, and allowed the Spectre to stop his heart.
