History: (Flash II #224 (BTS) - While Captain Boomerang was stranded in the 30th Century he had an affair with Meloni Thawne, and they had a son named Owen Mercer.
(Identity Crisis #3, 4) - The National Inquirer broke the story that Captain Boomerang had a son, and Boomerang tracked down Owen. He parked outside Owen’s apartment, but when the young man came out he was too nervous to tell him who he was. The next night he parked outside Owen’s apartment again, and Owen asked him if he was his father. Boomerang admitted he was, and they had a joyful reunion.
(Identity Crisis #5, 6) - Boomerang started training his son in the ways of villainy. Boomerang learned that his son had the power of superspeed, and admitted to Owen that Golden Glider was not his mother. Jean Loring had Calculator hire Boomerang to break into the home of Jack Drake, father of Robin. Jean had killed Sue Dibny, so she wanted to throw the superhero community off her trail by making them think it was Boomerang who was the threat to their loved ones. Jean also sent Jack Drake a gun and a note saying “Protect Yourself” in hopes that he would kill Boomerang. Boomerang told Owen he was on his way to the big time again, and went to kill Jack. Jack Drake shot Boomerang after he entered his house, but with his dying breath Boomerang killed Drake with one of his razor boomerangs. Owen mourned his father, and brought a newspaper with the story of Boomerang’s death to his grave, telling his deceased father he did hit the big time again. Owen designed a costume patterned on Boomerang’s and took on the identity of the new Captain Boomerang.
(Flash II #217) - Owen and the Rogues held a funeral for Captain Boomerang in Avernus. Owen nearly started a fight with the newer Rogues, telling them they were idiots and it was no wonder his father ended up dead if he hung with them. Afterwards Owen and the Rogues went on a crime spree using Boomerang’s weapons as a tribute to their fallen comrade. Cold offered Owen a spot on the Rogues out of respect to his father. Owen told Cold he’d join them if they retrieved Boomerang’s body from the F.B.I.
(Flash II #219, Flash II #1/2) - Cold tried to figure out who Boomer’s mother was. He thought about female speedsters Jesse Quick and Lady Savitar, but they’d received their powers too late to have someone Owen’s age with superspeed. The Rogues found a note from the Top who wrote that he was assembling his own Rogues to challenge Captain Cold’s team. Trickster went to find out where the original Captain Boomerang’s body was, an Owen helped him escape Flash’s clutches by tagging the hero with a razor-sharp boomerang. Owen was very please with himself, and even happier to learn that Trickster found the location of Boomerang's remains, it was in the possession of James Jesse and the F.B.I.
(Flash II #220-223, 225) - Owen and the Rogues broke into F.B.I. hq and slaughtered a number of guards, but didn’t find Captain Boomerang’s body there. When they returned to their own hq they were confronted by Trickster and his group of reformed Rogues. The two groups battled across Central City, and Flash showed up to battle the villains. Top interrupted the battle to undo the mental programming he’d used to turn some of the Rogues to the side of good. He turned Trickster and Heat Wave back to the side of evil, and Trickster led the Rogues to Captain Boomerang’s body. They threatened Ashley Zoloman, who was working on Boomerang’s body, which led to a brief fight between Zoom and the Rogues. Eventually Owen took his father’s body and had it buried in Avernus.
