Powers: The Bronze Tiger was one of the world's greatest martial artists, specializing in tae kwon do. He has also trained in other forms of hand-to-hand combat, and was a capable field leader. His training in spiritual enlightenment instilled him with an aversion to killing.
History: Ben Turner had a happy childhood in Central City until the age of ten, when he awoke to a burglar killing his father. He snapped, and fatally stabbed the perpetrator, unlocking his inner rage that would forever after boil beneath the surface. He began taking martial arts classes to control his anger, but would still occasionally lose control and find himself in trouble with the police. Turner left America to study in Korea under Master Kirigi, who'd trained Batman, among others. Kirigi decided to use his anger as a tool, and Turner soon found out how much he enjoyed inflicting pain on others.
(DC Comics Presents #39 (fb)) - O-Sensei taught martial arts in a Japanese monetary, and his prize student was Ben Turner, who'd left Kirigi. When misguided young American Richard Dragon broke into their temple to steal a priceless jade Buddha he was apprehended by Turner and O-Sensei. They decided not to turn him over to the authorities, instead teaching him the martial arts and helping him find inner peace.
Turner and Dragon became close friends, and went on to become government operatives in the C.B.I. under King Faraday.
(Batgirl I #62) - David Cain raised his daughter Cassandra Cain to be a killer since birth, and employed other assassins to help train her, including Bronze Tiger.
(DC Comics Presents #39) - The death threats Ben got were from Barney Ling, who wanted to manipulate him and Dragon into fighting his enemies. Ben was captured and brainwashed by the villainous Professor Ojo. He had Turner make a tiger mask, a receptacle for his anger, and created the assassin identity of Bronze Tiger for him. Bronze Tiger was now Ling’s pawn, and Ling feared reprisal from Richard Dragon, so he had the Tiger ruthlessly murder everyone in Dragon’s life to break his will. The Dragon realized he had to save Ben from himself, and tracked him down to Barney’s penthouse. Dragon and Tiger fought, and when Dragon dodged one of Tiger’s blows it hit Ling, and he fell from a window to his apparent death. With Ling dead Tiger was directionless, and Richard took him to a doctor to heal his mind.
The Bronze Tiger was later deprogrammed by Rick Flagg and joined the Suicide Squad.
(Batgirl I #67) - Batgirl was on a quest to find her birth mother and went to see Ben Turner, who’d quit the life of a mercenary to open up Tiger’s Dojo in Detroit, hoping to give wayward youth a direction and purpose. Ben assumed she wanted revenge for his part in raising her to be a living weapon while he was a member of the League of Assassins, and he said he deserved whatever she had in mind. Batgirl had no interest in revenge, only wanting to know more about her past and Lady Shiva. Ben told her that when Ra’s al Ghul became distrustful of most of his mercenaries he was willing to listen to David Cain’s ideas on raising a child to be a loyal assassin. Ra’s provided him with test subjects, who went mad within months of training and all ended up dead at each other’s hands except for one young boy nicknamed Mad dog who Ra’s decided to have an Ubu put down. Cain then narrowed his plan to raise but one living weapon and had a few failures before Cassandra was born. Ben admitted his suspicions that Shiva was her mother, but said only she could tell her for certain. Ben was still ashamed of his passed, but humbled that the League of Assassins had raised Batgirl to be a killer but found her own path as a hero.
(52 / WWIII Part Three: Hell Is For Heroes #1) - <Week 5, Day 5> Amanda Waller took the opportunity the chaos that WWIII provided to contact Ben Turner, telling him she was reforming the Suicide Squad to reclaim her former power within Checkmate, and to deal with situations just like WWIII. He admired her guts for starting a secret organization within a secret organization, and she convinced him to join her team by revealing that Rick Flagg was alive.
