Angst looked up to Sam Lane, and eagerly agreed to his suggestion to volunteer for secret weapons work. Angst enlisted in Project Angstrom, an operation run by General Witraker, who wanted to create super soldiers using radiation treatments. The project gave Angst superhuman powers as Angstrom, but the radiation that was in his system and powering him was also killing him. He was brought to S.T.A.R. Labs, and although they couldn't cure him they put him in stasis to keep him alive.
(Superman: The Man of Steel #4) - Parasite caused a power outage at S.T.A.R. Labs, and Superman restrained the villain, but the outage allowed failed government test subject Angstrom to escape. Angstrom confronted Sam Lane, blaming him for his monstrous state. Sam told him he never knew the intent of Project Angstrom, and General Charley Witraker, the person who was truly responsible for his state, killed himself years ago. Angstrom was about to kill Lane when Lois Lane told Angstrom she'd expose the military corruption that created him. He didn't believe her, and had to be taken down by Superman. The radiation emanating from Angstrom's body increased, and he had to be returned to S.T.A.R. The villain Parasite, hungry for energy, leeched all the radiation from Angstrom's system, returning him to normal. There was a military coverup, and Private Angst gave his "story" to Newstime, about how he was afflicted with a mystery illness and cured thanks to the military and S.T.A.R.
