One in a Million

Sometimes I can't hate you every day
Sometimes you can fall for everyone you see
Only one can really make me stay
A sign from the sky / Said to me

"Remind me again why we're out here in the barn, instead of the house?" Leighanne asked her husband. He was stacking wood in the corner for the wood burning stove inside the barn.

He laughed and smiled, "Because the barn's more stable than the trailer in this weather. You know how flimsy those trailers can be." He tucked a stand of her long blonde hair behind her ear. "It's more safe in here. Besides, it's kind of cool." He grinned.

"Once a country boy, always a country boy."

"Why of course..." He said while looking outside at the blizzard like storm. He hoped it would be over soon.

Just then Leighanne felt something she shouldn't have felt, for at least a few more weeks. "Brian, I think my water just broke." She gasped for air while grabbing the nearest thing to squeeze as the first of many contractions started.

"Are you sure?" He asked rushing over to be by her side. She nodded taking his hand to hold on to. "Wait, it's too ear-OUCH!" He screamed as she squeezed his hand.

"They're coming too fast, much too fast Brian..." She whispered. The pain was intense.

"We need some help!" Brian shouted. He went for his cell phone.

"No time!" Brian heard her say. Just then a rush of liquid came pouring out as Leighanne let out a howl Brian had never heard before.

He grabbed a blanket and ran over to Leighanne. "God Almighty."

"What? What is it? Is it the head?" Leighanne asked between pants.

"Lord, please help me..." He said a silent prayer. He had seen the videos the doctor told them to watch together. He could do this. Couldn't he?

I've been looking for that special one
And I've been searching for someone to give my love
And when I thought that all the hope was gone
You smile, there you were and I was gone

"Oh.." He rubbed the tiny creature dry and quickly set him on Leighanne's belly.

"Hey there.." Leighanne said in a soft tone to the newborn. She looked up at Brian who had taken a seat beside her. "He's..." She let a few tears escape.

"Beautiful." Brian finished.

"What should we name him?" She asked looking at Brian.

"Christopher. Christopher Thomas."

"It's perfect." Leighanne said. "Just like he is."

I always will remember how I felt that day
A feeling indescribable to me / Yeah
I always knew there was an answer for my prayer
And you, you're the one for me

"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Christopher, Happy Birthday to you!" The small crowd of family and close friends sang to the birthday boy.

"Make a wish honey." Leighanne said to her son.

"Ask for a new car!" Someone in the back yelled.

"Very funny AJ!" Leighanne shouted back to him.

"About anything?" He asked.

"Anything you want sweetie." She smiled.

The boy, who had beautiful blonde hair, closed his precious blue eyes and made his wish. Then he blew out the 5 candles on top of his Winnie the Pooh decorated vanilla cake.

"They grow up fast don't they," Kevin said walking over to Brian who was watching Leighanne take out the candles and cut the cake to serve to the guests.

"Yeah, they do." Brian laughed. "You know..."

"Yeah, I do." Kevin laughed. "I remember every single detail the day Kyra was born. From the way the air smelled like a fresh rain shower, to what song was playing on the radio the minute she was born. Everything was beautiful." Kevin smiled taking his trip down memory lane.

"You got lucky, Bri." Kevin said. "He's perfect, not a thing in the world wrong with him." Brian looked at Kevin. "Treasure that. It's what makes him precious."

"You want some cake, Brian?" Leighanne asked.

"Do I get ice cream if I clean my plate?" He laughed.

"Mrs. Littrell, I just don't see why you have to do this." Junior High Principal Smith said walking with her into his office.

"It's for his own safety." She said with a stern look on her face.

"But taking him out of public school in the middle of the year and placing him into a private school is just pushing it. They may make him repeat a year. And then what if he gets picked on there? Are you just going to take him out and place him in another school?" He asked.

Leighanne swallowed. "You sound like my husband."

"That's always nice to know." He replied.

"Well, what if we do this." She sat on the edge of her seat trying to make her point across. "You take the bullies out and I keep my son in."

"There's going to be bullies at every school. Everywhere he goes."

Leighanne growled under her breath. This man was stubborn.

"What happened to the boy's who did it?" She asked hoping he wouldn't see where she was going with it.

"Detention." He wasn't.

"That's all?" She shouted. "After what they did to him?" She asked.

"The parents complained," She looked at him. "Well, apparently, the boy's told their parents that Christopher gets 'special treatment' just because of who his parents are."

"Bullshit." She said taking Principal Smith by surprise. "You know damned well he gets treated just like every other child in this goddamn school."

"I see your point." He said. "I'll see to it the boy's responsible will be dealt with immediately." He looked down. "Thank you Mrs. Littrell for coming by on such short notice."

I was cool and everything was possible
You tried to catch me but it wasn't possible
Nobody could hurt me it was my game
Until I met you baby and went insane
And when you didn't want me, I wanted you
Because the finer thing bout it was I like to go
I like it when its difficult I like it when it's hard
You know it's worth it if ya find your heart

Music blasted from the speakers into the crowed room. It was the school dance. And everyone but Christopher Littrell was dancing. "Yo, Chris... why aren't you dancing?" Troy asked his friend.

Chris shrugged his shoulders.

"No.. listen," Troy moved closer to Chris so he would hear him. "This is a dance. They play music. People get together. Some dance together. Some dance by themselves. Everybody moves."

Chris laughed. "You don't get it, I.. I can't dance."

"Don't get me that shit, Boy!" Troy shouted. "Come here," He dragged Chris out in the center of the crowd. "Now, move." He said with a smile.

Chris looked around; everyone was encouraging him to. Why not? Chris thought. He slowly but surely, started to move to the beat. He'd move the way he remembered his father moved up on stage. "There you go! Work it!" Troy laughed.

"Go Chris! Go Chris!" The crowd shouted.

The machine was the only thing keeping her alive. She was old in age, but looked so young. Chris stood in the doorway as he watched his father take her hand in his, softly singing their song that he wrote for her on their wedding day.

"Beautiful, you are. Compassionate, is she. You have made me what I am, She's all I hope to be. The world, it lies in you. Full-filling all my dreams. She is my dream come true, and in just two words; my destiny. 'Cause you are everything, everything. My heart could ever imagine, everything, you are..." His voice was just as strong and rich as it had always been. Chris watched as his father turned to leave.

"I didn't hear you come in." Brian said looking down taking a seat next to Chris in the small room.

"I just came by to see how she's doing."

"Not good. Doctor's say, she'll be gone by the end of the week. If not sooner." Brian wiped some tears away.

"How are you holding up?" Chris asked his father.

"I'll be all right. I'll be fine. Don't know how, don't know when, but I'll get there." Chris looked at his mother. "How's the wife and kids?" Brian asked changing the subject.

"Good, miss their grandma and grandpa." Chris smiled.

"I miss them. I know she does, too."

"Can I ask you something?" Chris asked. Brian looked up at his son.

"Can you tell me the story of when I was born?" Brian looked down trying not to laugh. The boy could bring up some weird things at the most weirdest times.

"Well," Brian cleared his throat. "Um... it was snowing, winter. Cold as hell. The house was being remodeled; we were staying in a camper trailer. It got really bad and I wanted to go out in barn. It'll be warmer and safer there. Your mom had just three weeks to go... but you decided to surprise us." Brian laughed. "Why?"

"I've always wanted to know."

"Can I ask you something?" Brian asked his only son.

"Yeah."

"Your mom wants to know it more than I do. But I'll ask for her." Brian turned to his son. "When you were five, and she told you to make a wish, and you asked what for? And she told you about anything you wanted, what did you wish for? She's always wanted to know."

"For her to be happy in anything and everything she does. I wished for her to have all her dreams come true. Why?"

Brian just sat there and cried.
