Sarah Ann Smelser was born about 1859 Greene County, Arkansas to John W. and Nancy (Clark) Smelser. In the 1860 census, she was living with her parents in St. Francis Township, listed as 4 months old. In 1870 she was listed as 10 years old in her parents household in Cache Township near Crowley. Sarah Ann Smelser married Scarbrough S. Gregory before 1880. They had at least two children, John born about 1877, and Nancy born 1879.
