John Abraham Smelser was born about 1851 in Greene County Arkansas to John W. and Nancy (Clark) Smelser. In the 1860 census he was living in his parents household in St. Francis Township, listed as J.A., age 9. In 1870 he was living with his parents in Cache Township, listed as John A., age 19. On 21 December 1871 John Abraham Smelser married Sarah M. Gramling in Greene County. She was born about 1857 in Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas J. Gramling. In 1880 John and Sarah were living in Cache Township with their daughter, Mary, born about 1877. 1880 Greene Co., AR, Cache Twp.
