Jim Smelser wrote in his history of the Greene County Smelsers dated 13 March 1992,"Shortly after their father's death in Kentucky, Abraham and William G. loaded their families on home made rafts and set out for Arkansas. They (Abraham and Nancy) had three children by 1836 when they left Calloway County, Kentucky. John W. was nine years old, Mary Anne was five, and William J. was three."
According to "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas" by Goodspeed, Abraham and William arrived in Greene County on 6 May 1836. Abraham "settled on a tract of wild land and opened up 100 acres." (Goodspeed p 169).
