WORLD WAR I
From Steve "Book" Bookout: John Henry Bookout, A.E.F., Sergeant First Class/Chief Motor Mechanic. Wounded in upper torso during battle for the Argonne Forest by German machine gun and fell into a bomb crater. Shot enemy soldier who tried to bayonet him with his pistol. He later saw wisps of mustard gas coming over the lip of the crater. Used dead German's gas mask to stay alive, but the mask leaked causing severe lung damage. The gas also aggravated already extensive chest wounds which caused him to draw a pension for the rest of his life. Had to stay in France because of wounds when war ended and did not go home with his unit. Was discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa on 21 March, 1919 and given an Interurban Railroad ticket to Kirksville, Mo. to get home on. Recieved back pay and a bonus upon discharge of $103.05. Steve "Book" Bookout's military service, in his own words: 9/29/2000 Steven James Bookout of Newton, Iowa. Enlisted in Army in 1966. Became Warrant Officer in 1969. Served in Viet Nam as Helicopter Pilot in 1969, 1970 & 1971. Served with C Co., 158th Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Camp Evans. Call sign: Phoenix 62. Flew UH-1D/H "Hueys". Returned to Viet Nam with a grudge in 1970 after best friend and flight-school mate had been shot down and killed. Flew VIPs with 1st platoon, 120th Assault Helicopter Company in Long Binh. Was pilot for commander of all forces in Viet Nam, General W.C. Westmoreland and can say that the General was his co-pilot on those occasions as well. Call sign: Dean. Later flew OH-58A "Kiowa"s as a scout pilot for the 4th platoon since he had been a test pilot on the Army's acceptance program at Ft. Knox, Ky.. Call sign: Rat Pack 4. Later transferred to the 3rd platoon "Razorbacks" to fly UH-1B model gunships. Gained fame as a pilot of the "lightship" for the Pigs. This was a Huey with 6 C-47 landing lights mounted in a cluster on the side of the helicopter. Missions were flown at night at altitudes of 20 - 40 feet off the ground with all lights on. This was to draw Viet Cong small arms fire and give their position away. Two fully armed gunships would orbit high overhead with lights out to neutralize the position. After one such mission, the chopper was found to have 543 holes in it! Call sign: Razorback 33. Viet Cong in Saigon AO had put price of $2000 on the heads of Razorback 33 & 36! Turned down 2 commissions to be a regular officer. Continued to fly for the Army, Iowa Army National Guard and the Army Reserve until 1986. Attained Rank as Chief Warrant Officer 3. Had became the only U.S. military aviator in all five branches of the Armed Forces to receive a waiver to fly after requiring the use of two hearing aids! Photos of helicopters flown/personal markings or paint schemes are in numerous books such as Jim Mesko's "Airmobile" or Lou Drendel's "Huey". -end- Vietnam Conflict Database: BOOKOUT, CHARLES FRANKLIN Name: Charles Franklin Bookout Rank/Branch: E7/US Army Special Forces Unit: CCN/MACV-SOG, 5th Special Forces Group Date of Birth: 01 December 1934 (Sayre OK)Home City of Record: Oklahoma City OK Date of Loss: 04 July 1970 Country of Loss: Laos Loss Coordinates: 154852N 1071220E (YC362495) Status (in 1973): Killed/Body Not Recovered Category: 2 Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: GroundRefno: 1647 Other Personnel in Incident: (none missing) Source: Compiled from one or more of the following: raw data from U.S. Government agency sources, correspondence with POW/MIA families, published sources, interviews. Updated by the P.O.W. NETWORK in 1998. REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: SFC Charles F. Bookout was a squad leader assigned to MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observation Group). MACV-SOG was a joint service high command unconventional warfare task force engaged in highly classified operations throughout Southeast Asia. The 5th Special Forces channeled personnel into MACV-SOG (although it was not a Special Forces group) through Special Operations Augmentation (SOA), which provided their "cover" while under secret orders to MACV-SOG. The teams performed deep penetration missions of strategic reconnaissance and interdiction which were called, depending on the time frame, "Shining Brass" or "Prairie Fire" missions. On the Fourth of July in 1970, SFC Bookout was conducting a reconnaissance mission when his unit was ambushed in Laos. The team's position was near the border of Laos and South Vietnam, south of the South Vietnam city of A Shau, in Saravane Province, Laos. On the first burst of fire, SFC Bookout was wounded. He was examined by one of the squad members, and a single bullet hole was found in the left side of his back. About 10 minutes later he stopped breathing, and no pulse could be found. Due to the tactical situation and the intense enemy fire, the team was instructed to move to a clearing for extraction. SFC Bookout was left behind, because it would have slowed the progress and endangered the lives of the rest of the team to try and carry him to safety. It was believed that he was dead. The rest of the team was extracted safely at about 1900 hours that day. No search teams were inserted to recover Bookout because of impending darkness and the enemy situation. For every insertion like SFC Charles Bookout's that was detected and stopped, dozens of other commando teams safely slipped past NVA lines to strike a wide range of targets and collect vital information. The number of MACV-SOG missions conducted with Special Forces reconnaissance teams into Laos and Cambodia was 452 in 1969. It was the most sustained American campaign of raiding, sabotage and intelligence gathering waged on foreign soil in U.S. military history. MACV-SOG's teams earned a global reputation as one of the most combat effective deep-penetration forces ever raised. The missions Bookout and others were assigned were exceedingly dangerous and of strategic importance. The men who were put into such situations knew the chances of their recovery if captured was slim to none. They quite naturally assumed that their freedom would come by the end of the war. For 591 Americans, freedom did come at the end of the war. For another 2500, however, freedom has never come.
