A Little Bit About Bon
Ronald Belford Scott was born on July 9, 1946 in Kirriemuir, Scotland. He moved with his family to Perth, Australia when he was six. His Australian schoolmates gave him the nickname Bonny, which was later shortened to Bon. As a young boy, Bon played drums with his father in a Scottish pipe band.
Bon left school at 15 and held a variety of jobs inluding driving a tractor, working on fishing boats and as an apprentice weighing-machine mechanic. In his early rock bands, Bon would play drums and sing. Bon's earliest bands included the Spectors and the Valentines, who released a single in 1967. The Valentines were arrested for drug possesion in 1969 and later in 1970 they broke up. Months after, Bon joined Farternity. They released two albums, Live Stock in '71 and Flaming Galah in '72, then began to tour Europe, where they got support from an English band called Geordie - which was fronted by the man who would later take over for Bon in AC/DC, Brian Johnson. When the band returned to Australia, Bon got in an accident and was in a coma for three days and in the hospital for months, ending his association with Fraternity.
Now Bon was working as a driver, driving bands around to gigs. This was where he met the guys of AC/DC, as their driver. Bon wasted no time telling the band he could play drums and sing, and so he played drums for a time. A little while after, Angus and Malcolm Young were looking to replaced Dave Evans for a better singer, and when Evans didn't show up for a gig, Bon took over. With Bon, AC/DC released High Voltage, Powerage, Let There Be Rock, Highway to Hell, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and a live album called If You Want Blood, and got them lots of fans all over the world.
Everything was going great until tragedy struck. Bon was always a heavy drinker, and after a night of drinking, Bon passed out in the backseat of a friend's car. He ended up choking on his own vomit and died February 19, 1980.
Bon's death was devasating to both the band and fans. But the band wasn't ready to call it quits. A letter from a fan told them about Brian Johnson, the lead singer of an English band called Geordie. Bon had seen Geordie in concert and had enjoyed Brian Johnson's performance, so the band auditioned him and with Johnson, they released Back in Black that June. The album was released with an all black cover to show the band's mourning for Bon.
I think that Bon is still with the band in spirit and that his spirit keeps the band going, because Bon would've wanted to see the band go on.
