General Resources

Dogpile A tremendous search tool. Searches about a dozen engines for you at once.
ProFusion. Brought to you by the good folks at the University of Kansas, this multi-search engine displays only unique results to your query, and even detects broken links for you! The main interface requires Javascript, but they have a non-javascript version, as well.
Inference Find Quite useful-searches the web for things directly and indirectly related to whatever keywords you type in, then organizes the results by category.
Search.Com Doesn't search everything at once like Dogpile does, but everything you need is at your fingertips.
My Virtual Reference Desk. If you need to know something, you can probably find it here.
555-1212.Com Allows you to look up people by name OR just their phone number. U.S. listings only.
Phonebooke.Com Multiple on-line phonebooks here. There's also a section that allows you to find Canadian listings. A word of warning to Lynx users-this site uses frames.
Canada Post Residential Services. Find a Postal code or the nearest Post Office of a friend in Canada.
U.S. Postal Service. Anything you'd ever want to know, except maybe who'll be next to " go postal".

Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial Brought to you by the folks at UC Berkely, this tutorial includes an introduction to the Internet, a glossary of terms, things to know before searching the World Wide Web, how to create search strategies, and how to refine your topic and identify the search tools to fit your needs.
Resources. A great page of links to everything you could possibly want to know about, sponsored by the Witchita, KS public schools. Be patient-it takes a while to load.
The Re:Search Centre. Lots of search engines accessible on a single page. An annoying hroizontal scroll problem for graphical-browser users and an annoying lack of alt tags for Lynx users, but a good site nonetheless.
Beaucoup.Com. LOTS of search engines listed with links. Don't worry, they're organized by category.
Search Insider. Useful information about surfing the web with search engines.

Medical Resources

Medsite.Com A pretty good medical search engine.
Doc Finder. Established by the Association of State Medical Board Executive Directors, Doc Finder allows you to look up state licensed physicians in participating states. You can search for information on a doctor, check on the status of a physician's license, or learn how to file a complaint.
Medbot. Brought to you by the good folks at Stanford, this site allows you to search up to 4 databases simultaneously. Unfortunately, it uses Javascript, so it's no good on Lynx.
Medis
Medical Search Engines.
The Digital Medical Library TM.
CliniWeb. Submit queries in five different languages.
Neuroscience Web Search.
National Organization for Rare Disorders. Lots of info here. You can even search their database of more than 1,100 diseases.

Legal Resources

FindLaw. A searchable database of all U.S. Supreme Court cases since 1937. The cases are searchable by citation, case name and full text and are browsable by year and US Reports volume. The cases contain US Reports page markers and hyperlinks within the cases to other cited cases for easy navigation.
USSC Plus. Search for more Supreme Court decisions. Unfortunately, you need a browser that supports frames to see anything.
Law Guru Homepage. A great legal search engine for anyone with a browser that supports frames. In the webmaster's defense, however, he/she at least acknowledges the lack of a non-frames version of the page is a problem.
Martindale-Hubble Law Directory. Search for a lawyer by state, city, practice, etc.
Westlaw Lawyer's Directory. If you click on "Advanced Search," you can search by county - no area-code searches, alas.
The Jaffe Legal News Service Archives. Journalists can also get the free newsletter by e-mail or fax periodically. Its purpose is to provide Journalists access to leading legal experts as interview and background sources.
Virtual Legal Search Engines. This site contains a ton of legal search engines. It also links to a list of 500 specialized search engines in more than 40 categories.
