The Ultimate Nirvana Newsletter
August 22, 1997
Aloha peoples!!! It's third issue time..and we have a ton of new subscribers this issue. So, I'm going to explain how this newsletter works: each time I send this out, I give you a new topic. You then email me and tell me your thoughts on the topic, and I post them in the next issue. I also put some news pertaining (somehow! It might be weird and twisted, but it'll be connected, somehow..) to the band in every issue. And, I also send out one .JPEG/.GIF or .WAV/.MIDI with every issue...K?
So...the topic from Issue #2 was: What do you think of Courtney Love's new style? Do you think it's "her" or an act she's putting on for the press? What do you think about her and Edward Norton? Do you think it's time for her to move on or should she still be playing the mourning widower? Oh, before I post what you had to say, I have something I wanna share: Talk about your weird stuff. Today [August 20 when I'm writing this] I got my issue of BAZAAR magazine in the mail...and no other than yours truly, Courtney Love, is on the cover, with the headline "Courtney Love: America's Most Stylish Woman." I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, but boy was I surprised. Anyways, here's what you had to say:

i read in guitar world (big sweet 75 article) that krist is been movin on n stuff. After kurdt's death he quit drinkin and is all full of energy or something.
courtney love can do fine as an actress, and dress up nice n stuff, i don't care, she's always been kinda cool, no matter what. mourning periods are officailly like one year; so she's had enough. But mourning has no set time. if she still needs to feel like crap 30 hs a day, 8 days a week---she should mourn. if she wants to put on an act--i guess we should let her.

I don't know about Courtney's new look, if it's something that she's just
doing to be taken seriously or if it's really a new side of her. She has
evolved, in a way, and the new "movie star" Courtney just wouldn't be right
in the grunge outfits she used to wear. It makes no difference to me what she
wears, as long as she can still write good music. If it's the new her, if
this look is here to stay, then congratulations, Courtney, and maybe people will take her more seriously. She has a definite goal with the acting thing,
and her new look will help.

I think that Courtneys new style is cool beans bud. Courtney doesnt strike
me as tha type of person that would put on an act, jest to be pleasing to tha
newspeople, press, her fans, etc ya know? I dunno that mech about who
Courtney is with and shtuff, but I think its great that shes hooked up with
Norton. I mean, who determines how long one is to mourn?

I think her new image is good because I think it will be better for Frances.
As for her and Norton they broke up so Its not really an issue. I think she
can move on. It's been 3 years 4 months and 6 days today [written on August 15...] since Kurt was found. I think 1-1 1/2 years is enough grieving so she's definitly ready to move on.

Courtney Love - No more. I as an individual have concluded what "Celebrity
Skin" means. Courtney once was a kick-ass Riot GrrrL that had many fans and
many people that looked up to her. She was once the head "Queen" of the
grunge nation. Always wild and crazy ready for anything. This Riot GrrrL skin
rips off leaving a new "Celebrity Skin". Now shes Miss Evening Gown Goddess
that is a new-found "Movie Star". A quote of hers almost had me in tears, but
i guess I held it back, quoted by Courtney Love - " I just wanna go out on
stage, sing my little song and everyone else will make it all better. I wanna
be Stevie Nicks. I dont want to hold the part of the Grunge Nation anymore.
As you can see I'm over it ". She's over it, she's over that young wild riot
grrrL thing that she once had going on. She's ready to settle down and get
old? I dont know. The Edward Norton thing, yeah its good that shes moving on
and stuff, but I still dont think she should change. HoLe is really gonna
suck if they're not grunge. grunge is offically dead if HoLe gets out of it.
Soundgarden split up, HoLe is gonna fade away, Nirvana has been gone for a
while {geffen is even trying to get rid of Nirvana sound waves} and all of
those other bands. I just think its sad, but we can't do anything about it,
can we? Well if techno and Rap takes over..at least I'll still have all of my
old cds..yeah yeah yeah, as you can see I'm over it..aren't you too? FeeL free
to E-Mail me with your hate letters, Complement letters, anything..

On Courtney's "new style",
There's been a lot of talk about this. I don't think it's a big deal. We
all dress and behave differently for different occations, and it wouldn't be
appropriate for movie premiers and the like for her to use the "kinderwhore"
look. The irony would be completely lost. Also, she IS older now, and we
all mature and evolve, or at least I hope we do. The same look she's had for
most of a decade would be old and cliche'd after a while. It's worth noting
that Kat Bjelland has dropped the look as well. She is a bit less extreme in
her behavior these days. She's given up drinking, and is taking much better
care of herself now. Also, Frances is starting school soon and Courtney
doesn't want to embarress her.
As for Edward Norton, if he makes her happy then that's what's important.
She'll never quit missing Kurt, of course, but she needs to get on with her
life. It HAS been over three years now. If a friend or relative had lost a
loved one, we would want them to carry on and start living life again after a
while. It's no different for Courtney. Always think of your favorite
artists as HUMAN BEINGS, not idols, not gods, but flesh and blood people with
the same wants and needs as the rest of us.

and an afterthought from a late subscriber, on the Come As You Are topic:
you guys were talking about the come as you are book. i think its probably the most real book of nirvana there is. the teen spirit one has all the WRONG definitions of the songs. i know this because a song means different things to all people. [Editor's note: I made that big b/c how oh-so-right that is.] and rolling stone's cobain just is plain facts that any simple fan would know. the kurt cobain and courtney love book just has all kinds of notable quotes that most of us have heard. nirvana and the sound of seattle barley has anything about nirvana in the book. and route 666: on the road to nirvana basically just talks about the 70's punk scene and the sex pistols. and the last chapter talks about his death and all that. come as you are actually is a nirvana book worth reading and it deserves more credit than it gets. you should check out mike azzerad's latest book "screaming life" its a photograph book of all kinds of seattle bands (hole, mudhoney, soundgarden, nirvana, pearl jam, etc..) and azzerad writes in liner notes, and the book is dedicated to cobain. its a neat book to check out anyway..even if you dont really like the music, there's some great, interesting pictures in it. rare ones at that too...well just thought that i would say some info about it..bye
