THE DRESS

Twas upon my silken bed,I lay sobbing quietly as the storm rumbled above... Filled with a disquieting fear, as dreams were woven and spun crazily in my head... Strange that such night terrors could be caused by a symbol of our love...

Yet as I speak of it now, I know tis all true... And in that awful darkness, where the dreams spun their gossamer webs... That old dream weaver painted his pictures in dark surreal hues... As I watched in morbid fascination, and with an unholy dread...

Rain fell in torrents, and the lightening came in a jagged flash... In an instant I caught a glimpse of an ivory sash... Just a glimpse, but in that brief instant it said so much... When it comes to matters of the heart, it is easy to misunderstand such...

But there it hung on the distant tapestried wall... the object of my pain... And new hot tears fell as surely as the ceaseless rain... Still it hung there, lifeless, in graceful folds... Intricately interwoven with threads of purest gold...

The spiderweb veil, with a juliet crown... Still sparkled and glittered, alongside the jeweled gown... Tiny leather slippers still occupied their space... Even the dried petals of the beribboned bouquet he gave me, lay where it was dropped in place...

The shutters rattled in protest, as the wind screamed around the old stone tower... Making the curtains appear to dance... How long had I been awake? Maybe an hour... The flickering bedside lamp making macabre images on the wall... The visions moved to the rhythm of the ever building squall...

To my mounting terror, the gown seemed to take on a life of it's own... The rustling of the underskirts seemed to whisper, 'There is still no prince on the throne'... Even the jeweled gown mocked me, from it's place on the wall... Wind blew in erratic gusts, causing the veil to billow about, as it screeched like the banshees call...

Twas a night, much like this one, that he had gone away... With a quick embrace and passionate kiss, we parted ways... His king had called and given him the order...to return post haste to the regiment he led... But his word had been given, upon his return, we would wed...

I watched him leave that night, on the big midnight steed... And in my heart I said a quick prayer and wished him godspeed... His raven locks flew out behind him, as he faded from my sight... Twelve moons have passed since that fate-filled night...

Since that dark and rainy eve when my love last departed... My mind has played over and over again how our love first started... As children we had grown together, running through fields of flowers, along the towering cliffs, above the azure sea... And as we both grew older, we just seemed to know, an unspoken pledge of what should be...

For many months when that first fortnight passed... I would stand on those cliffs and look out to sea until the sun set at last... Hoping and praying to glimpse white sails flying, her colors againt the sea... Many nights I watched from my stone tower...knowing if he were able, he would have returned to me...

On the night my love left, I made a vow, I intend to keep... That I would wait for him by the moonlight each night, until I was claimed by sleep... I know one day he will return for me and together we will ride, never to be parted again, side by side, he and I...

I will be waiting when that day arrives... For our love transcends all boundaries... Deep seas and mountains high... So mock me if you will, you hateful gown... For we will win in the end... Yea, my love and I, as we ride those wild horses on heaven's winds...
