9. Multiple Attribute Decision Making: Methods and
Applications
Decision makers are often faced with several conflicting alternatives.
How do they evaluate trade-offs when there are more than three criteria? To
help people make optimal decisions, scholars in the discipline of multiple
criteria decision making (MCDM) continue to develop new methods for structuring
preferences and determining the correct relative weights for criteria. A
compilation of modern decision-making techniques, Multiple Attribute Decision
Making: Methods and Applications focuses on the fuzzy set approach to multiple
attribute decision making (MADM). Drawing on their experience, the authors
bring together current methods and real-life applications of MADM techniques
for decision analysis. They also propose a novel hybrid MADM model that
combines DEMATEL and analytic network process (ANP) with VIKOR procedures.
The first part of the book focuses on the theory of each method and
includes examples that can be calculated without a computer, providing a
complete understanding of the procedures. Methods include the analytic
hierarchy process (AHP), ANP, simple additive weighting method, ELECTRE,
PROMETHEE, the gray relational model, fuzzy integral technique, rough sets, and
the structural model. Integrating theory and practice, the second part of the
book illustrates how methods can be used to solve real-world MADM problems.
Applications covered in the book include:
·
AHP to select planning and design services for a
construction project
·
TOPSIS and VIKOR to evaluate the best
alternative-fuel vehicles for urban areas
·
ELECTRE to solve network design problems in urban
transportation planning
·
PROMETEE to set priorities for the development of
new energy systems, from solar thermal to hydrogen energy
·
Fuzzy integrals to evaluate enterprise intranet web
sites
·
Rough sets to make decisions in insurance marketing
Helping readers understand how to apply MADM techniques to their decision
making, this book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students as well
as practitioners. This is an e-book containing 335 pages

12. Operations Strategy (2nd Edition) The aim of this book is to
provide a treatment of operations strategy which is clear, well structured,
and interesting. It seeks to apply some of the ideas of operations strategy
to a variety of
businesses and organisations. The
text provides a logical path through the key activities and decisions of
operations strategy as well as covering the broad principles which underpin
the subject and the way in which operations strategies are put together in
practice. More specifically, the text aims to be: _ Balanced in its
treatment of the subject. In addition to taking the orthodox ‘market led’ approach to
operations strategy, the book also provides an alternative but complementary
‘resource-based’ perspective._ Conceptual
in the way it treats the decisions, activities and processes which together
form an organisation’s operations strategy. Although some examples
are quantified, the overall treatment in the book is managerial and
practical. _ Comprehensive in
its coverage of the more important ideas and issues which are relevantto most types of business. In any book covering
such a broad area as operations strategy, one cannot cover everything.
However, we believe that the more important issues are all addressed. _ Grounded in the
various bodies of knowledge which underpin operations strategy. Most chapters introduce
concepts and principles, often from other academic disciplines, which
illuminate the particular operations strategy issue being discussed. International. In the examples it uses,
the book describes practical operations strategy issues. This book is intended to
provide a broad introduction to operations strategy for all students who wish
to understand the strategic importance and scope of the operations function,
for example: _
MBA
students, who should find that it both links and integrates their experience
and study of operations management with their core studies in business
strategy; _ higher-level
undergraduates studying business or technical subjects, although we assume a
prior knowledge of the basics of operations management; _ postgraduate students on
other specialised Master’s degrees should find that
it provides them with a well-grounded approach to the subject; _ executives will also be able to
relate the practical and pragmatic structure of the book to the more
conceptual and theoretical issues discussed within the structure. This e-book contains

15. Rational Decision Making for Managers: An Introduction
Rational Decision Making for Managers provides
students with a basic understanding of quantitative and analytical techniques
that managers use to make complex business decisions and helps them to recognise when they are appropriate. Sarah Keast and Mike Towler also show
the characteristics of the decisions that can be informed by the use of each
technique, thereby guiding the reader in their choice.
Rational Decision Making for Managers features:
·
separate chapters on robustness analysis and game
theory
·
a strong contextual discussion and clear structure
·
a concise mathematical appendix
The book is essential reading for students studying business decision
making, quantitative methods and business research methods.
The
primary aim of this text is to provide managers and students with an
introduction to some of the most common decision-making techniques. Following a
discussion of the decision context, the approach followed is to divide the
techniques into sections according to the types of decision for which they are
most appropriate. This text begins, in Chapters I to 3, by introducing the
nature and context of decisions. In particular, the consideration of futures is
developed, while both quantitative and qualitative techniques for describing
continuous or discrete models of the
future are expounded. These first three chapters aim to familiarise
readers with the potential nature of the future, whether it is certain,
uncertain, or strictly uncertain. The second section of the text, Chapters 4 to
7, and the third section, Chapters 8 to 10, are divided to stress that, while
some decisions are singular in nature in that they will be taken once or will
be repeated after a finite period of time, some decisions are sequential in
nature, opening up future decision-making opportunities in which managers may
add value. This is a simple yet important conceptual step. The role of the
nature of the future introduced in the first section is seen throughout the
later chapters. The future may he certain, as highlighted in Chapter 6 with examples
from linear programming, it may be uncertain owing to uncontrollable events and
considered discrete (e.g. Chapter S considers payoff matrices and Chapter 9
considers decision trees), it may be uncertain and considered continuous
(exemplified in Chapter 4 with inventory management decisions), or it may be
uncertain owing to the actions of a competitor (e.g. Chapters 7 and 10 consider
game theory).

The
book presents a broad overview of the nature and functions of strategic
management in nine chapters.
Part 1,
Introduction to Strategic Management, explains what strategic management is and provides a framework
for understanding what strategic managers do. Chapter 1 discusses the
relationship between strategic management and strategic leadership and shows
how competitive advantage results in superior performance. It also describes
the plan of this book and discusses the principal functions of strategic
managers. Chapter 2 discusses the ways in which companies affect their
stakeholders and why it is necessary to create corporate governance mechanisms
that ensure that strategic managers work to further the interests of
stakeholders and behave ethically.
In Part
2, The Nature of Competitive Advantage, we discuss the factors and forces both external and internal to
an organization that determine its choice of strategies for creating a
competitive advantage and achieving above-average profitability. Chapter 3 looks at opportunities, threats, and
competition in the external environment. Chapter 4 examines how a company can
build competitive advantage by achieving superior efficiency, quality,
innovation, and responsiveness to customers. It also discusses how managers can
craft functional-level strategies that will allow an organization to achieve
these goals.
In Part 3, Building and Sustaining Long-Run Competitive Advantage, we
provide a streamlined discussion of the different levels of strategy that must
be developed to build and sustain a long-term competitive advantage. Chapter 5
considers how to use business-level strategies to optimize competitive
positioning and outperform industry rivals. Chapter 6 discusses how to
strengthen competitive advantage by expanding globally into new national
markets. Chapter 7 then examines the various corporate-level strategies, such
as vertical integration, diversification, and outsourcing,
that are used to protect and strengthen competitive advantage and
sustain long run profitability.
Finally, in Part 4, Strategy Implementation, we examine the many operational
issues involved in putting all these strategies into action simultaneously.
Chapter 8 first discusses the importance of strategic change in today’s
fast-moving global environment and the issues and problems involved in managing
the change process effectively. Then it outlines how to build and develop a
company’s business through the use of internal new venturing, acquisitions, and
strategic alliances and considers the pros and cons of these different methods.
Chapter 9 discusses how to implement strategy through the design of
organization structure and the operational issues involved in selecting
structures to match the needs of particular strategies. It also looks at the
organizational control systems necessary to fit strategy to structure and the
role of organizational culture in developing competitive advantage.
As you
can see by perusing the table of contents, the approach we take in Essentials of Strategic Management parallels that of our other book, Strategic Management: An Integrated Approach. Our goal is to offer a contemporary, integrated account of
strategic management, but one that is streamlined and focused only on the
essentials of this complex and fascinating subject.

28. Wealth Management: Private Banking, Investment Decisions,
and Structured Financial products
This book has two
themes: Private Banking and investment decisions regarding Structural Financial
Products. Dr. Dimitris Chorafas
examines in a rigorous way whether structured financial products are advisable
investments for retail and institutional investors and, if yes, which risks
they entail. As our society becomes increasingly affluent, and state-supported
pension schemes find it difficult to survive, a growing number of high
net-worth individuals, and families, have become retail investors - looking for
ways and means to optimize wealth management, and Private Banking deals with
these sorts of clients. Private banking also deals with clients that are
institutional investors, such as pension funds, mutual funds, and insurance
companies, as well as not-for-profits, foundations and companies explicitly set
up for wealth management. Both institutional and retail investors are being
offered by the banks they work with structured products. Typically, these are
securities that provide them with a redemption amount, with may be either with
full or partial capital protection, and some type of return. The book examines
structured financial products, their polyvalent nature, and the results which
could be expected from them. Return on structural instruments, which are essentially derivatives, is
paid in function of a specific investment strategy on selected underlying asset(s).
This essentially means on the performance of the underlyings, obtained by asset managers, which may
be banks or hedge funds, through purchase or sale of embedded options. But
there are risks. Both risk and return from structured products are related to
three main issues: the volatility of future value of an underlying, the
uncertainty of future events, and the exposure of the product. Every type of
investment is subject to market forces, and the more leveraged a portfolio is,
the greater will probably be both the assumed risk and the expected reward. The
fact that structured financial products appeal, or at least are being marketed,
to both retail investors and institutional investors makes the dual approach
deliberately chosen in this book most advisable. This book addresses all these issues
in a practical manner with numerous case studies and real-world examples drawn
from the author’s intensive research. *Because it is based on intensive
research, the book is rich in practical examples and case studies
*Addresses the growing trend towards the use of structured financial
instruments in private banking

49. Virtual team Success: A practical Guide for Working and
Leading from a Distance
It
is a practical guide for working and leading from a distance. Until now, there has not been a resource available to guide organizations
in setting up and getting the most out of virtual teams or to help virtual team
members and leaders enhance their effectiveness collaborating or leading from a
distance. The objective of this book is to fill that gap and provide a
hands-on, practical toolkit for both members and leaders of virtual teams. We
have also included applied tools that we’ve used in our consulting work. For
example, the book includes several case study–like ‘‘brain teasers’’ that allow
you to consider how you would handle certain challenging situations related to
collaborating or leading from a distance. Section One
focuses on the skills and characteristics necessary for building high
performing virtual teams. Chapter One highlights our
research findings on the challenges many virtual teams face and the pitfalls
that often lead to failure. Chapter Two provides a profile of high-performing
teams to outline what ‘‘good’’ looks like. Chapter Three is a practical toolkit
and resource guide to help you successfully launch virtual teams. Chapter Four
reviews the differentiators of successful virtual teams and introduces a
practical model of top-performing teams. And we
discuss strategies and tips that help team leaders and members boost virtual
team performance. Section Two focuses on best practices for leading from a
distance. Chapter Five outlines our research findings on the unique leadership
challenges that virtual team leaders face, and we discuss the practices of the
most effective team leaders. Chapter Six addresses the critical things that
virtual team leaders can do to boost the performance of virtual teams who are struggling
to achieve their objectives. Chapter Seven is a practical guide for
facilitating and managing virtual team communication. In it, we discuss tips
for effectively facilitating virtual meetings and how to optimize technology
use for virtual collaboration. Finally, the Conclusion summarizes some of the
key lessons from our research and consulting work with virtual teams and team
leaders. This e-book contains 222 pages.

THE FIRST-TIME
MANAGER THE FIRST STEPS TO A BRILLIANT MANAGEMENT CAREER
This book aims to provide the first-time manager with a grasp of what he or she needs to know in order to function at least reasonably well, and possibly a great deal better than that. It does not offer the depth of a major management qualification such as a MBA; but then, it costs several thousand pounds less and does not take several years to complete. It is, however, meant to provide in an evening’s read the main headings of what it took me many years’ experience and a lot of study to learn. This e-book contains 241 pages.
THE SCIENCE OF INFLUENCE
How to Get Anyone to Say Yes in 8 Minutes or Less
The Psychology of Persuasion changed the way people thought about influence. It was the first book to take the fundamentals of influence and put them into a working model.Today, 10 years later, John Wiley & Sons has asked me to write a book that will become the new source for influence in academic, business, entrepreneurial, and sales arena. This was a tall order, to be sure. I considered simply updating The Psychology of Persuasion itself. This e-book contains 256 pages.

Accidental
Leader What to Do When You’re Suddenly in Charge
Let’s be honest about this: Most accidental leaders have a pretty rocky time of it. Many of them freak out, change their styles all around, try desperately to hide their managerial weaknesses, and generally come across as nervous, not-readyfor- prime-time wrecks. The costs of this rockiness are huge: Lost time for the company or project, which translates to missed opportunities • Bewildered colleagues who wonder why you don’t just tell them what to do • And toasted careers for the leaders who couldn’t lead (because when they fail, they don’t usually slink back to their earlier positions—they’re often through with the organization forever) torrent
