Across the line

It was 4h30 when Kai woke up in his bed. He sat up. His forehead was wet from the heavy sweating however it was cold in the room. What had been wrong with him this last time? He had been having these weird dreams for almost three months now. They left him confused and unfocused. He didn't like the state he was in now, he felt vulnerable. Nobody had actually asked something about his latest, awkward behaviour, maybe because they didn't notice it or because they didn't dare to ask. It was a fact that he wasn't very talkative, maybe he was a bit asocial and distant. Many people called him cold and heartless, but they didn't know him. No one really did… Tomorrow the whole gang would go training with their blades in the big arena, he hoped he would be fit enough to show them something. However they were a team and he was still the leader, he couldn't let anybody come near his level. To him, it was a sort of security, security against being pushed aside. He heaved a sigh and wiped the sweat off his forehead, he was so tired. He laid down in the pillows again and closed his eyes, hoping he could catch some sleep before it was time to get up again.
At 6h30 the alarm-clock went off. Kai groaned and slammed his hand on the stop-button. He sat up in his bed and went with his hand through his hair. He was tired, tired due to the lack of sleep. He quickly showered and dressed himself, then he descended the stairs. He grabbed his blade off the table and left the house. He didn't need any breakfast at all, he wasn't hungry. Now that he thought about it… He hadn't eaten yesterday evening nor yesterday noon. He caught himself skipping meals from time to time lately and again, he wondered what could be wrong with him these days. They had arranged to meet at the arena at 8h00, that was still an hour and a half, but he wanted to get there early, maybe think everything over. He just wasn't his old self. The Bladebreakers… there were five of them… Himself, Kenny, Max, Ray and Tyson. Kenny was a data-freak, never leaving his laptop behind, always busy calculating… First he had thought he was pathetic, but those data had come in really handy during those two years of co-fighting with the others. Max, not a superior Beyblader at all, but still, his Draciel could still be very surprising from time to time. And there was Ray, an ex-White Tiger, good opponent, but too much carried away by his emotions. And then there was Tyson… There was something different about that kid. He had known him for almost three years now, maybe a bit less. Tyson had changed during all this time, but still Kai couldn't stand the loudmouthed kid around him for too long. He hated his attitude, his big mouth and most of all his hyper kinetic behaviour. Well, that's what Kai tried to talk him into his own head. But somewhere deep inside he knew he was wrong… He didn't like it when Tyson asked him questions or even asked how he was doing. But why did he keep bugging him then? It's not like he was unfriendly or anything, but Kai just didn't like that much attention. But lately he had felt different, not only within the group, but also his attitude to Tyson specifically had changed. He didn't know how he had changed or why, but the kid didn't appear to be so annoying to him any more. The blue haired heaved a sigh, why didn't he understand what was going on with him lately? Suddenly, he realized he had arrived at the building they had agreed to meet. Kai decided to get inside already. It was cold outside and there was an icy wind that went right through your clothes to the bone. As he opened the large, dark blue doors, he heard something inside. He glanced his watch, 7h00… Curious as he was, he walked on, not knowing what to expect in here at this early hour. As he entered, he saw someone standing at the side of the arena. Kai heard the violent spinning of a Beyblade, he would recognize that spinning sound out of one thousand… It was the spinning of the Dragoon, Tyson's blade. What was he doing here so early? He stepped somewhat closer, wanting to make sure he wasn't wrong and it really was Tyson.

"Tyson?", he softly said.

The kid looked aside, it really was Tyson of course. Kai knew from the beginning, but he tried to ignore the fact that his heart had just skipped a beat.

"Kai, you're early…", he smiled brightly.

Kai thought it was best to act cool as normal, so he snorted.

"So what? So are you", he bit.

"Nah, thought I would train alone a bit before the others would arrive…"

"The same here", Kai thought to himself.

He wondered if Tyson had foreseen this, this being alone together in the arena before the rest would show up. Why didn't he feel annoyed being here with him? Kai felt uncomfortable in the current silence between them.

"What's wrong with him?", Tyson thought, "He's not acting as usual… Nah, better not ask about it… yet…"

"So, wanna blade?", Tyson challenged.

"You against me? You won't stand a chance…"

"So what? I wanna blade against ya, it wouldn't do you harm, now would it?"

"…"

"I take that as `challenge accepted'", Tyson smirked.

Kai grimaced as he took his place aside the arena.

"Challenge accepted", he shot.

He took out his Beyblade and prepared himself for the match, he had to stay focused, he couldn't afford to lose to Tyson. He glanced his watch, 7h15… Time enough to finish this off.

"Let it RIP!", Tyson shouted as he released his Beyblade into the arena.

Kai did the same, letting his blade violently spin around. The two blades slammed into each other, pushing each other from the one to the other side. Kai gritted his teeth, Tyson had learned a lot during all their time of travelling and competing with other Beybladers, but he could not lose to him, he refused to lose to Tyson NOW!

"Dranzer!", he furiously shouted.

"Dragoon!", Tyson followed his example.

Both boys called out their bit-beasts, they always called them out early in a fight because they came in pretty handy. The Red Phoenix and the Blue Dragoon appeared high above the arena. Fire and Ice…

"Dranzer, now!"

"Dragoon!"

Dragoon avoided the attack with ease, to Kai's great surprise. He infuriated even more, he would NOT lose!

"Dranzer…"

"Dragoon, attack NOW!", Tyson yelled before his opponent could even react.

Kai's bit-beast was caught by surprise and his blade was hit hard. It shuddered a bit, but kept spinning. The elder was surprised and had difficulty to stay focused.

"Not now!", he whispered to himself, "not now!"

"Dragoon, AGAIN!", Tyson continued.

This time, it was over for Kai. The Dragoon hit the other hard and Kai's blade flew over the arena's side and was about to smash onto the floor, but Tyson caught it with his right hand. A smile decorated his face, not an arrogant smile though. He took his own blade out of the arena and then walked up to Kai, who stood like frozen, his gaze to the floor. The kid stopped in front of him and held out his right hand which held Kai's blade. Kai closed his eyes, his teeth gritted, his fists clenched, trembling… He turned his head away, turning around, walking towards the gate. As he was about to open it and walk out, Max, Kenny and Ray entered.

"Hey, Kai, where are you going?", Max cheered.

Then they saw Tyson standing somewhat behind him, holding Kai's and his own blade.

"You two have been blading! Who won?"

Kai was about to force them three aside to get through, but Tyson immediately answered the question.

"Nobody did, it was a draw…", Tyson easily lied.

Kai turned around and stared at him, why did he lie about the outcome of their little match?

"He almost threw me out, but I just got a lucky hit this time…", Tyson added.

"Just lucky?", Ray suspiciously asked.

"Yep, just lucky…", the boy softly repeated.

"So, what about some training?", Max asked.

"I'm in!", Ray cheered.

"Me too!", Kenny beamed.

"What about you, Kai?", Tyson asked.

Kai didn't answer, he still stared at Tyson who had just lied about the result of their fight, he wondered why he had lied? And why did his heart skip a beat from time to time? There were just too many questions which required too many answers…
"Kai?", Ray asked.

"What?", the oldest blader bit.

Ray backed away a little, surprised at this violent reaction. He thought Kai had become somewhat milder over the years… Tyson only blinked, he knew his opponent from this morning wanted some answers. Tyson frowned, he had to do something about this tension between him and Kai. He decided to take his chance and walk out on him with HIS blade, he would follow and probably yell and scream at him, but he didn't really care about that, he wanted to talk to the guy!

"Look guys", Tyson apologized, "I'm going home, I need to think a few things over…"

"Okay…", Ray nodded.

"Sure…", Max agreed.

"See you later, Tyson", Kenny said.

Tyson nodded and forced Kai aside, so he could get out. Kai got the hint, that kid still had his blade and he wanted him back! So he had no choice than to follow him, but how was he going to explain that to the others?

"Say Kai, Tyson still has your blade", Ray remarked.

"…"

Kai swiftly turned around and stepped outside the gate. He shivered against the cold wind, looking around, searching for Tyson.

"Kai, are you coming or what?", Tyson asked.

The elder turned around and saw Tyson leaning against a wall somewhat further, the two blades still holding in his hand. He had to convince Kai to come with him, but he knew it wouldn't work without a little trick.

"Give me my blade", Kai said.

"You'll get it back…", Tyson calmly replied, "But first I wanna talk to ya…"

A short snort.

"What about? If it's about blading, then you could have said it in front of the others.", Kai shot.

"It's not…", Tyson bit his lower lip.

Kai was surprised, this was not about blading? He wanted to ask what this was about then, but he shivered in the cold morning air.

"You're cold…", Tyson remarked.

"So?"

Kai studied the other, why was he always wearing his shorts, no matter what the weather was?

"Look, Kai, I really want to talk to you…", Tyson sighed.

Kai was a bit confused, he didn't now how to react. And why had his heart just skipped another beat? It drove him crazy…

"My place?", Tyson carefully asked.

Kai closed his eyes for a brief moment. Tyson was afraid he'd say no, but he didn't, he just nodded. The boys began walking in silence. Kai wondered what he wanted to talk about. Something inside told him he actually wanted to talk to Tyson too, but why hadn't he still figured out what was wrong with him? Maybe he'd find out later, or maybe he should ask Tyson… No way, that was nothing for him, going to ask for someone's help. He was Kai, he didn't need any help… Or at least that was what he thought…
Some time later, they arrived at Tyson's place. He unlocked the door and let Kai in. There was nobody home after all. His parents were on vacation for a few weeks, so it was quite calm at home.

"You want a drink?", Tyson asked.

"What do you want to talk about?", Kai immediately came to the point.

The other understood the message and sat down on the couch, he could better start off right away.

"I'm worried about you, Kai…", Tyson softly said.

"I can take care of myself…", the older defended himself, still standing upright.

"I know… But there's something different going on, Kai. You're distracted, unfocused… and you look paler, I seriously think you lost weight and something is definitely bothering you…"
"Nothing is… there's nothing… I'm just…", he could only bring out.

He couldn't bring out anything that made sense, he had no explanation for what was happening to him. Something WAS indeed happening to him, but he wasn't eager to tell about it. However it was warm inside, Kai was still trembling, inside he was still frozen solid. Everything went black for a moment, the image before his eyes blurred.

"Kai, are you okay?", he heard Tyson ask.

He couldn't answer, he could only shake his head. Then, he fainted… Tyson didn't know what to do, he sat down next to him on the floor and took Kai's hand in his.

"Damn, he's fucking cold", he thought, "Better get him on the couch and get him a blanket"

He got the young man on the couch and ran up the stairs to get him a warm blanket.

"Goddamit, something is definitely wrong", he thought, "why didn't I talk to him earlier? What if he had gone home and he had lost consciousness on the way home? Would anybody have done anything?"

He descended the stairs again and covered his team mate with the blanket.

"Now some tea, and he'll be fine… I hope…", he sighed.

A few minutes later, Tyson came back from the kitchen. He sat down on the low table next to the couch and watched the person laying on the sofa. Kai was still unconscious, Tyson glanced the clock, almost 15 minutes now and he wondered what could have caused this. Tyson wanted to feel Kai's hand again, but he was afraid he would wake up now. Finally, he decided to take the risk anyway, he carefully took the youngster's hand in his again. It felt warmer than before.

"Good", Tyson smiled.

The boy sighed and hoped Kai would wake up soon. He slowly stood up and went into the kitchen to turn off the fire because the kettle whistled. When he came back and sat down again, Kai stirred a bit. Tyson didn't move, he waited until the other would open his eyes. Kai fluttered his lashes and slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he saw, was an unfamiliar ceiling. He thought about it and then remembered he and Tyson were having a talk when he passed out. Tyson… where was he? Kai slowly looked aside, seeing the boy sitting on the table, watching him closely.

"Welcome back", Tyson softly said.

The older blader slowly sat up.

"How do you feel?"

"…I don't know…", came a whisper.

It was the first time Kai spoke to him so friendly, not yelling at him or bitching him around.

"You want some tea?", Tyson carefully asked.

Kai nodded.

"Yes please"

Tyson stood up and went to the kitchen to get him a cup of green Japanese tea, it was the only tea they drank in this house, he only hoped Kai liked it. He walked back and handed the other the cup.

"It's green Japanese tea, I don't have anything else…", he apologized.

"It's okay, this is just fine…", Kai assured him.

A silence fell. Kai nipped the hot tea.

"Feel better?", Tyson asked.

"Kind of…"

"Good…"

Another difficult pause.

"What happened, Kai?"

"What do you mean?", Kai's remained soft and calm.

"What happened that made you pass out?"

"… I don't know… everything blurred all of a sudden and then went black…"

"I'm worried about you, Kai, you have not been your usual self lately, now have you?"

"I can take care of myself", Kai growled.

He didn't like it when people were worried about him, he always told them he could handle things, but deep inside he was lonely and he knew something was not right.

"Kai, what's going on with you lately?", Tyson whispered.

"… I don't know…", he looked away.

"Can you describe it or anything?"

"… It's some odd feeling I've never had before…", Kai admitted.

"I'm sorry to say, but you indeed have some serious emotional issues…"

"I have not!", Kai shot, the tea almost flying out his cup.

"Calm down, Kai. It's okay, we all have those…", he tried to reassure him.

"What do you suggest I do about it?", Kai looked up.

"Start cleaning up the mess inside yourself. Why don't you let your feelings guide you once in a while instead of anger and hate?", Tyson locked his gaze on Kai's.

Those words and Tyson's gaze left the Beyblader speechless. He had no clue of what to say next, the younger noticed it.

"You say a feeling you've never felt before? How does it feel?", he tried to help him out.

"It confuses me… and I can't keep focused…"

"Something else?"

"… it feels like my heart sometimes skips a beat…"

Short silence. Tyson knew these symptoms too well. He smirked to himself, but that this happened to Kai? He couldn't believe it. The feeling he was thinking about matched Kai's behaviour and feelings. Friendlier, confused, unfocused… Those could be symptoms of being in love. But… Kai? Being in love? Tyson didn't think Kai knew what love was, he probably never felt loved before by no matter who… Everybody had already noticed that Kai attracted many girls, but he had never even dated one nor even given one a glance, he was always focused on the match. But recently, that had been slightly different. How long had Tyson been seeing it? Almost three months now? Kai made more faults than he used to, he still won his games, but something was wrong. Tyson wondered why no one else had picked up on it, it was so obvious. Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by his team mate's voice.

"You know what it is?", he asked somewhat worried.

"…"

"Tyson?"

"… I think I do…"

"What is it?"

"Is there some reason why you feel your heart skips a beat? Something you think about?"

Short silence.

"Or someone?", Tyson carefully and softly added.

"I seem to have that when I think about you", Kai thought to himself, "Yes…", he finally said.

"Then I think it's quite obvious…"

"What then?"

"I think you might be in love…"

Kai blinked his dark brown eyes for a moment. He was shocked. He? In love? Okay, that was still acceptable… But he? Being in love? With Tyson? That was harder to accept. He swallowed hard.

"Not what you expected?", Tyson sighed.

"Not really…"

"You understand it now?"

Kai shook his head.

"How long has this been going on, Kai? Three months?"

"How did you know?"

"It's not too hard, you were unfocused during the games. You won every one of them, but you made more mistakes than usual. But you could afford it because your opponents were from a much lower level than your own, so… I noticed from the beginning something was wrong and it was eating you up inside. Don't try to deny it, Kai, because you know that's true… This feeling is also the reason why I had the chance to win our match from this morning… You were confused, messed up inside and unfocused. You probably didn't get much sleep either…"

The other nodded.

"You've been skipping meals lately?"

Another nod.

"Look, Kai, you won't get rid of the feeling right now. You've got to do something about it or it will get you out of balance."

"What do you expect me to do?"

"Either tell the person you're in love with or forget about that person and put it aside…"

"Which one do you recommend?"

"I would recommend the first one, it's easier for you and for that particular person. Then you've said it and the other knows and gets the choice.", Tyson blabbered on.

"I see…"

Kai thought about to tell Tyson right now, but first he had another question on his mind. If he was going to tell him how he felt about him, he should have a proper thought about the other's thoughts too, ne?

"Why did you lie to the others about the outcome of our little game?"

Kai smirked to himself as he noticed Tyson began to blush a bit. The boy didn't know what to say at once, he knew he was blushing and he hated it!

"I didn't want any questions about it… I've noticed your weird behaviour since the beginning and I thought that was to blame for your… minor result…"

Tyson hoped Kai would be satisfied with this explanation.

"Thank you…", Kai softly said.

Tyson couldn't believe his ears, did Kai just thanked him? He decided not to ask questions about it. Kai knew enough for now. It was amazing he had never noticed Tyson's interest in him before. He had always been blinded by hate, maybe that would change now…

"How would you explain to someone you love him?", Kai asked.

"That depends on who you have to explain it to…"

"What would you say if you had to say it to me?"

"… Err… I probably wouldn't say it because you hate me anyway", Tyson blushed, "And I probably wouldn't stand a chance…"

Kai was glad he had tried to get some info out of Tyson after all, now he could make this into a little game.

"Who said that?"

"Well… nobody did, but…"

Kai smirked to himself and pulled Tyson off the little table right onto his lap.

"Kai?", Tyson blushed crimson red.

"Hm?"

"What are you doing?"

"Crossing the line", he whispered in the kid's ear, before placing a light kiss under his earlobe.

"Uhm… Kai? Are you feeling okay?", Tyson gasped.

"I'm feeling really fine…", Kai purred, tightening his grip on Tyson's waist, kissing his way down his neck.

"You… have… some… special… message…?", Tyson panted.

A short pause first.

"I love you", finally came Kai's answer.

Tyson turned in Kai's firm grip so he could face his team mate. He let himself drown in Kai's dark brown gaze, fearing this was a dream, but deep inside knowing that this was plain hard reality. And what kind of…

Tyson smiled, wrapping his arms around Kai's neck.

"I love you too…", he shyly said back.

A smile appeared on Kai's face, it was the first time the younger blader saw him smile a REAL smile. Then, a slight blush appeared on Kai's cheeks.

"Can I… kiss you?", he whispered, trying to hide the blush on his face.

Tyson chuckled.

"First time?"

A slight nod.

"Of course you can… first time for everything…"

Tyson softly let the inches between their lips vanish. It had took Kai long enough to cross the line between hate and love…
