Magic's Pain Part 5

"I can't believe that Vanyel would be so stupid," a shrill yell of anger filled the cave.

"Savil, please calm down. I'm sure the boy had good reasons. Perhaps his ego has gone over his head but I'm sure there was a reason Vanyel would choose to go," Starwind placed a gentle hand on her cheek.

"Perhaps you're right. I guess I'm just tired. There's just always so much going on with Vanyel that there's hardly time to rest. It would still be a while before we reach Krebain if we kept going and I can't sleep until I know that Vanyel is safe," Savil slumped down to her knees. She leaned back and placed her head against the wall.

"It shall only take us roughly two days to reach Krebain if we start again in the morning. That is including rest times," Moondance joined the two by the entrance of the cave.

The two Tayledras and Savil had still been on their way to find Krebain when Vanyel went with him.

:I think he's gone for good: Yfandes Mind-spoke to Savil.

Savil raised her head to the Companion who stood with Kellan feet from the entrance of the cave, :Why do you suspect that?:

:I can't get in touch with him. There's some kind of block. It may be Krebain's doing but then again Vanyel could be blocking me out.:

:Well, I honestly don't think it'd be Vanyel. So don't be so pessimistic you're going to pass it on to Kellan and then what am I going to do?: Savil nearly laughed out loud when she pictured Kellan in a depressed mood considering he was always so perky and joking around with Savil.

"'Fandes says she can't reach Van. I guess we have to get closer and go through the block shield that Krebain has up," Savil announced to the Hawkbrothers.

"I figured that much," Starwind nodded his agreement then let out a quiet sigh. "This is going to be trouble but I think we all know that. I think Vanyel even knows that."

"Well, we shouldn't worry about it now. We rest now. I've got the fire set up and we should be ready to travel again at day break," Moondance took Starwind's hand then guided his life-bonded and Savil deeper into the cave.

They had little of the bread Mistress Reva had snuck into their pouches that they carried for this trip; but, it would have to be enough for the next two days. The three of them sat down around the fire. Savil sat across from Starwind and Moondance. They gazed into the fire as they warmed themselves from the outside in.

Moondance's eyes capered with the flickering blue and orange flames. It was true that even though he would be by Starwind's side during this and reassuring Savil that everything was ok, he hoped that Vanyel would be ok in the end. He hoped that Krebain wouldn't warp his mind with his powers.

:What's bothering you, Ashke? You seem unsettled all of a sudden.: Starwind looked at his life-bonded and stroked an almost invisible strand of silver hair out of the boy's eyes.

:Vanyel. It's not like him to accept something like going with Krebain. You know it, too.:

:Perhaps the boy isn't as over Tylendel as we thought and he was blinded by the way Krebain acted. It could've happened. But if that is the case then we have to be extra careful in what Krebain tells the boy.: Starwind was utterly scared that Krebain would have the boy's mind warped before they got there.

Starwind kissed Moondance's forehead then laid back against the blankets. Moondance curled up next to Starwind and closed his eyes. Savil soon followed their movements on the opposite side of the fire.

"Good night, Savil," Starwind murmured before closing his eyes.

:Can we go now, please?: Yfandes asked Savil, knocking her out of sleep. The day had just broken on the horizon. :Kellan's anxious to get to Vanyel as well. I have to know that he's alright.:

:Yes, 'Fandes we can leave now.: Savil sat up and ran her fingers through her hair. She then scrambled to her feet. Not bothering to awaken Starwind and Moondance, she left the cave. :Kellan, I'm going to take 'Fandes. Be sure to let Moondance and Starwind know that I've gone on ahead.:

:Yes, Ma'am: Kellan responded.

Savil hoisted herself up onto Yfandes' saddle and they headed off in the direction of Krebain and Vanyel.

The breezed of the morning air sent a chill over Savil and Yfandes. Savil hugged the Companion's neck in hopes of warmth circulation between their bodies. Neither really knew where they were going they just headed for the sunrise.

"Dammit, Moondance wake up! Savil's left with 'Fandes," Starwind shook his life-bonded wishing the boy would awaken.

"What? Savil left?" Moondance mocked in a more than half sleepy state. Suddenly he jerked awake after thinking about what he just reiterated. "Savil's left?" Moondance's voice rose and got the response of a nodding Starwind. "Good heavens, we have to go now!"

Starwind headed out of the cave with Moondance following closely. Starwind mounted Kellan with Moondance seated behind him. Kellan didn't need any further encouragement and took off to chase after his Chosen and Yfandes.

"Why didn't you tell us earlier, Kellan?" Starwind's voice was stern and full of disappointment. "She could get in a lot more trouble with it being just her and 'Fandes."

:I know, I'm sorry. Savil seemed like this was something she and 'Fandes needed to do by themselves.:

Kellan responded without the slightest sound of regret in his mind-speech.

"If we hurry we should be able to catch up to them before they get too far," Moondance reassured.

At that, Kellan sped up the pace of his gallop to a full out run. Neither Moondance, Starwind nor Kellan had time to think about the chill in the air and before they knew it, the sun was halfway between the horizon and mid-sky. That meant that from what Kellan told Starwind that Savil had already been traveling for only a candle mark.

"I hate going through these," Savil complained to Yfandes as they trekked through the dark depths of a heavily wooded forest.

The slightest sounds caused Savil to jump. Yfandes' neck turned sharply at every random movement in the under brush. She thought they were lost but had faith in Savil to tell her if indeed they were headed in the wrong direction.

Suddenly Savil heard a loud yell and looked back behind her. No one was there. She pulled the reins on Yfandes and the Companion followed the order to stop. Savil looked around when she heard the sound of hooves beating the ground. Through the trees she saw silver hair flying back in the wind. It was Starwind and Moondance. Kellan approached Savil and Yfandes. Starwind and Moondance were both relieved that Savil hadn't gotten farther than this.

"How dare you leave, Savil. You know how dangerous it can be out here," Starwind nearly scolded.

Savil nodded knowing that she shouldn't have left. She was just so eager to get Vanyel back that nothing else really mattered.

"Just don't do it again," Starwind's voice was softer. He placed a hand on hers to reassure her everything was going to be fine.

"Enough talk let's go now," Moondance said almost as eager as Savil to get to Van.

Savil and Starwind nodded in agreement. Then the five of them headed on their way. Shortly after their stop, they exited the forest to a clearing of tall grass and wild flowers.

That night they stayed at an Inn and headed out again in the morning. By noon they had reached the estate that belonged to none other than Krebain.

TBC...

Ok, not the best chapter but I wrote most of it while half asleep. Don't write when you're like that it's kind of hard. Also, I know that my interpretation of Starwind's and Moondance's relationship may not be portrayed like in the book but just bear with me. Ok?! It won't take me as long to write the next part to this fic since it's back to Third Limited with Krebain and Vanyel... Yay!!!
