Vanyel awoke to a splitting headache. The sun's light stung his eyes. He placed a hand over his eyes. The boy removed his hand from over his eyes and looked down his body. He was covered in a sheet, under the sheet, he wore his breeches. He looked around the room. Beside him was a tray of food, fruits, breads and cheese.
Vanyel took a piece of cheese. He bit the cheese then nearly choked from surprise when he saw Krebain sitting in the chair directly across the room. The shadows hid the man's face. Vanyel was thankful at this moment that he still wore his breeches.
A look of fear seemed to creep onto Vanyel's face. He remembered the happenings of the night before. He remembered the fierceness of the Drakes. Most importantly, he remembered how Yfandes' mind-voice was red with disgust and anger. Vanyel just hoped that he wouldn't lose Yfandes' trust forever.
Vanyel was quite surprised by the fact that Krebain didn't use him last night when he had the perfect opportunity. Maybe Krebain was more of a gentleman than Vanyel thought when it came to things like that. Of course, being Blood Path Adept, Krebain couldn't be a gentle man about everything. Vanyel knew that for sure.
"Good morning, lad," Krebain spoke in a low, manly voice. "Chavar is sending clothes up here for you but first, one of my servants will take you to the bath area. Just go down the steps and Rendan should be waiting for you."
Vanyel just nodded and threw the sheet to the side. Krebain stood from the chair. He caught Vanyel's hand. Krebain kissed Vanyel's cheek.
"If there's ever anything you need, want or desire just let me know and I'll have it done. I've taken up the responsibility to take care of you and I will do my best. I'll explain more later, go clean yourself, Rendan is waiting," Krebain planted a quick kiss on Vanyel's lips then Vanyel left.
Vanyel made his way down the narrow, winding stairs until he came to a narrow hallway that ran perpendicular to the stairs. There stood a boy not more than 14 years old. He had brown curls for hair that hung just above his shoulders. His eyes were of marvelous violet. He had a lanky body that made his clothes look far too big for him. He stood a mere 6 inches shorter than Vanyel.
The boy wore a white shirt with untied laces at the top, the collar was only turned up on one side. The boy's pants were a charcoal black that hemmed just below his knees. No shoes or stockings protected the boy's feet. A faint smile rested on the boy's lips.
"Are you Rendan?" Vanyel asked and the boy nodded.
Rendan took Vanyel's hand and led him down the dimly lit corridor until they reached a room surrounded by windows and flowers. Hemlock, mistletoe and lavender lined the walls and large bath. The bath was set into the floor, surrounded by a layer of smooth, gray stones.
"Undress here and get into the bath. I'll be back in a moment with a towel and soap," Rendan told Vanyel then scampered off to another part of the well lit area.
Vanyel untied and removed his breeches then lowered himself into the bath. The water was above luke-warm and quite comfortable, it seemed to loosen every tense muscle in Vanyel's body. Vanyel closed his eyes. The water seemed to null him back to sleep. He felt soft, gentle hands on his back. Fingers seemed to work intensely on his back making the feeling of comfort more prevalent. Vanyel knew it was Rendan without having to look. Though the touch felt wonderful, Vanyel grabbed Rendan's hands and moved them from his shoulders.
"I'm sorry... I just though...," Rendan started off, startled by Vanyel's actions.
"No need to be sorry. It felt wonderful just, I feel I could fall back to sleep if it kept up," Vanyel tried to explain.
Rendan nodded in understanding.
"So, have you grown up here?" Vanyel asked hoping he can get information on Krebain.
"Yes, been living here since I was born," Rendan explained, he saw the encouragement in Vanyel's eyes for him to carry on. "Krebain has been so nice to me and my mother. He's been tutoring me in Valdemar studies. He says he thinks I'll grow up to be more than a servant. I sure hope so but I hope
"So he's a good, decent man then?" Vanyel asked as he rinsed his soaped hair.
"Oh, yes very much so."
"You do know what he's done to numerous villages, don't you?"
Rendan nods, "He says it's to build his empire. I trust him and support his determination, don't you?"
Vanyel didn't answer. He grabbed the towel and wrapped it around his waist as he got out of the bath. Suddenly appeared a woman. Vanyel jumped at the unexpected sight of her. She held something blue in her hands. She placed them on a window ledge then was gone.
"Who was that?" Vanyel asked, still a little surprised.
"That's Lady Chavar, she's the one in charge of the clothes here. She won't talk because she lost her voice to a Mage battle. No Healers can fix it so she just follows Krebain's orders without question," Rendan explained.
Rendan went to the ledge that the clothes were laid upon. He brought them over to Vanyel. The outfit comprised of a white shirt similar to Rendan's, white breeches and a light blue velvet tunic. It fit Vanyel quite well. The outfit somehow made Vanyel look younger but older at the same time.
Vanyel dressed and glanced into a long length mirror next to the closest window. He was happy with the clothes. Tylendel had clothes like these. The thought struck Vanyel. For a moment, he thought he saw Tylendel in these clothes, staring back at him in the mirror.
"'Lendel," Vanyel whispered and reached out a hand to the mirror.
"Sir?" Rendan's voice interrupted the image.
Vanyel looked to Rendan then back to the mirror. He was staring at his own reflection again.
"Do you approve, sir?" Rendan asked.
Vanyel nodded, "No need to call me 'sir' just call me Vanyel, ok?"
Rendan nodded then took Vanyel's hand. The boy led Vanyel back to the stairway. There stood Krebain waiting. He wore his hair loosely tied back by a red ribbon. A dark green tunic overlapped his breeches and shirt.
"Thank you, Rendan," Krebain said to the boy. The boy looked at him with pleading eyes. "Perhaps later, now go help your mother," Krebain responded.
Vanyel just shrug it off not really wanting to know.
"Join me for a walk, won't you?" Krebain asked and took Vanyel's hand.
Vanyel just followed Krebain in response. They continued down the stairs until they reached the door they came in during the night. They took a right and headed in the opposite direction. They came upon a glass door that overlooked a grand garden. The two exited the door and onto a balcony. Krebain led Vanyel down a narrow stairway to the garden. There were many different types of flowers growing, lilies, tulips, dragonsnaps. They started walking down one row.
"There are a few things that I want to tell you. They are things you need to know while you are here, do you understand?" Krebain asked.
Vanyel nodded.
