yo this is Eric, here is my reviews for the bands I saw in Califronia 1 through 15.
15. Hemlock a. k. a HemsuckThese guys were one of the opening bands for Slayer; I think they were the only band that I hated during the whole trip. They sucked big time, I think they were playing hardcore or something. The bassist / lead singer (fat fuck that can sing) actually played a entire song with one arm, that how simple their music was, also they were trying to get everyone to chant their name ũemlockbut no one participated. I never heard of this band and I never should have.
14. Havoc this was a local band from CA, I asked the lead singer what kind of music they were going to play before handhe said thrash metal, like Megadeth. He was right, they played the thrash, I say they were alright, seemed like they had a lot of local fans. The lead singer kept joking around, making weird comments on the stage. He was a pretty good guitarist though.
13. The Kevin Bandthese guys were real old, and old school. They played mostly instrumental songs, with main focus on Kevin lead guitar, he was a good guitar player, some people were saying how good of a shredder he was, but from what I saw he was doing mostly just ull-offs since I was all the way up in the front, the high notes on the guitar was killing my ears, very good melodies though. I liked their instrumental songs a lot more than the ones they had vocals. Good band.
12.The Kinisin crazy punk rock band. With the lead singer showing his ass crack at the audience the whole time, they played with tons of energy and had some pretty good songs. During the concert I yelled out ŨLUE STICK!!to the band because my brother said he had a glue stick in his pantsright after I yelled that, the place kind of quieted down and the lead singer pointed at me and said What!? What glue stick mean? I got a little scaredso I just said he had a glue stick in his pocket, and then he said no. It chap stickthen started a song right after saying that. The band was overall very good, and after the concert I talked to the lead singer, and I apologized about my glue stick comment, and then he said, Nah, that nothing, I usually get FAG.
11.Hypocrisy the first opening band for the Dimmu Borgir concert. We actually snuck in the place while they were doing their sound check, I gave the lead singer the metal horn, and he replied with a smile and a head nod. When it came time for the real show they were very good, I didn listen to their music that much before, so I never even heard of most of their songs, but hearing them from their sound check before hand, and listening to the real thing after, was kind of interestingI went up to the very front, and was enjoying their music very much. Good cowboy hat.
10.Hatebreedthis was the second time I saw these guys perform, though now they were only one of the openers for Slayer. I actually had to sneak my way into the pit, because since this concert was a big event and was inside a dome, we actually had assigned seats, so in order to get where the stage is, you have to sneak past security guards to pass each ground level, so I had to hop 3 railings to get in to the pit. But I succeeded and it wasn too hardas always the mosh pit was crazy for Hatebreed, it was hard to watch the band because you don know when your going to be attacked, so half the time I was just trying to protect myselfbut the band was pretty good, full of energy and heavinessI was shouting along with the simple choruses they make. Ū WILL BE HEARD!!!!
9.Nevermore great guitar player, Jeff Loomishe was shredding like a psycho guitar hero X, the band had some really great songs, but my main focus was on the playing of Jeff. This band was a lot heavier than I remember from some of the songs I heard from them, over all the sound was really tight, and the lead singer Warrel Dane has a really unique voice, and to me originality is one of the most important thing in a good band. Ohat the end of their set I got a pick from the guitar player, that written ůEVERMORE
8.Fireball Ministry a band that I didn know that was going be playing that night, they were one of the openers for Andrew W. K, so that was a very good surprise, because I heard that Hoobastank was going to be playing instead and I did not want to see those fuck heads, plus I like Fireball Ministry a lotFireball Ministry sounds almost like Black Sabbath, as my brother was saying all Fireball Ministry riff was taking from Black Sabbath riffs, I heard the similarities but didn recognize what specific riff, so I didn give a fuck. Their set was great, and they played the song I really wanted to hear ŧlatlineǁE
I was singing along for this song and the lead man - James A. Rota II looked pretty happy that I was singing along, since I don think too many people knew who they were in that concertbottom lineFireball Ministry makes flawless songs and the vocals are really similar to ozzy but it A ok!!
7.Slayer These guys were deffinitly the most famous band wee seen during the trip, and they had the fans of true idiocy, all they do is yell out Ŵlayer!!at random moments and cum all over each otherby the end of the night, I was very much irritated by these thrash metal monkeys. But the band was great; I guess they played every song from the ųeign in Bloodalbum as a surprise for the diehard fans... I was wondering why they kept playing one song after another none stop, they played so harsh, and Kerry King and the other guitarists Jeff Hanneman play fucking fast. But by this time I was pretty goddamn tired so I decided to watch the band further than usual, this was the last day of the trip and the last band that we were going to see, I wanted to sit down a little bit, still their set was amazing, and they must have spent a lot of money making it, but probably gained a lot morethis place was packed with people. I enjoy the small concerts more but Slayer was BRUTAL!!!!! and that good for heavy music.
Oh, and another good thing about their concert was that it was inside the Universal Studios, so we were going on fun rides before the concert for free!! I not sure if we were supposed to do that thoughbut who gives a shit.
6.Symphony X the headliner of their tour, it was very, very epic.
Russell Allen was probably one of the best vocalist I ever seen live, and Michael Romeo was probably the most skillful guitarist I ever seen.
These guys had a real tight sound; I say it was perfect.
The thing that stood out a lot was the showmanship of Russell Allen, this guy was dancing like crazy, sweating all over the place, trying to connect with his fanssince I was at the very front I could actually smell his stinkbut that was not that big of a deal, since concerts always stink anyway
Well these guys were very good musicians and they were just busting out their skills. But I was getting pretty bored by the end of the setespecially how they made their anchor a 30min song called ŵhe Odyssey and the other thing was that they didn play my favorite song Out Of The Ashes
But I got to shake all of their hands, except the bassist I thinkbut who gives a fuck.
5.Arch Enemy oh shit these guys were good!! They were one of the openers for Slayer and I had to sneak into the front to see them up close, when I finally got up front, probably around 2/5 of their set was already over, but it was well damn worth it!!!! ost people didn know who they were because they were the only none American band thereSwedish melodic death metal!!!!!!!!!! But they were the ones I wanted to see the most!! Angela Gossow vocals were powerful, brutal, pure amazing, and the Amott brothers were the masters of their guitars!!!! They played truly heavy and beautifully, I was screaming along with most of their songs they played, I would have to say my favorite was ťead Eyes See No Future Great Band!!
4.Dimmu Borgir The headliner of the Death Cult Armageddon tour. They had a really strong, and powerful presence, they were really into their charactersI say their image had a lot to do with their performanceThe lead singer shagrath was dead serious the whole time, and so was other band members, except the guitar player Galder, he was pretty happy looking, and he had a real cool looking guitar strap, it was half leather, half chainNice.
The bass player Ŵimenwas doing some vocals, he has a really good voice, it kind of operatic and it was really clear, but the thing that surprised me the most about his vocals was how long he lasted at this one part of the song, I think he held a note for like 25sec or so, the crowd went nuts for that.
I knew all of the songs they played it, and damn, it was good, Ie been a Dimmu Borgir fan a lot longer than many of the other bands I listen to these days, so this show was pretty good shit for me. My favorite song was probably Ŭings of the Carnival Creation It was one of the first songs that I really liked from them. Great performance.
3.Children of Bodom Children of fucking Bodom from Finland!!!!!!!!!!! The greatest metal band in the world!!!! This was THE performance!!! Alexi, Henka, Jaska, Janne, and Roope!! Was all right in fucking front of me!!
The crowed went pretty crazy from the first songthey opened with ůeedled 24/7 lot of people were singing along and so was II actually filmed some of their performance toobut I got kicked out of the concert, which was during the first show datethey played twice in LA because the first show sold out, so I snuck in the first show with my camera but got kicked the fuck out because I was filming. (I actually tried to sneak back in that same night around 4 more times, but failed quit when they threatened to call the PIGS.) It wasn that big of a deal; I came back the next day with out a camera, but with a ticket and saw them once more.
All of their songs were completely skillful and masterfulvery melodically catchy, yet heavy. I was happy to see Alexi guitar playing and Janne Keyboard magic up close, I can say that they were the most skillful, but they sure know what kind of melodies your ears wants to hearseeing the keyboard solo for the song Ťhokeholdwas very nice, and the guitar solo for ťownfallwas astonishing.
I actually met these guys before the showI went to go shit at a random hotel, and when I came out of the bathroom, they were just cruzing at the lounge area. So I went up to them and chatted a little. That was probably one of the best parts of the tripI talked to Janne, Jaska, Roope, and said yo to Henka. But not ALEXI!!!!!! too bad wellheir show was deffinitly something wild.
2. Andrew W. K. This was fun!!!! This guy makes such energetic and up lifting songs! though not many people attended this concert, everyone who was there was singing along with every single song he played! Andrew is an extremely fast keyboard player and his energy when performing is incredible, he was doing his signature head banging/slam dance in a WHEEL CHAIR!!!!!!!! He had to perform on the wheel chair because his foot was broken, but that did not stop him from partying hard! He gave it his all and so did the entire audience!! He played almost all the song from his first album Ū Get Wetexcept for two, and played about four songs from the new album ŵhe WolfǁEand that not allhe also played the kitkat song you hear in the commercials Ũive Me A Brake!!
I liked all the songs he played, but I was really happy when he was playing Ŵhe Is Beautifuland as I was singing along, he pointed the mic at me and I got to let my voice be heard!! that was great. The last song he played was I Get Wet and I say that my favorite W. K. songpure energetic force of sound, smashing through the building from the beginning till the end.
After the concert I met Eric Payne, who is one of the guitarist for the band, I said to him oh Eric Payne, my name is Eric too, good job.then he said thanx, that good.
1.Devin Townsend Devin Garrett Townsend. Probably the best musician I will ever know, some call him a geniusall I know is that he really makes the most wonderful, emotionally involved music. The man has many different musical projectsthe first I ever heard from him was his extremely heavy, brutal, and angry band Strapping Young Lad then I heard his mellow, dramatic and yet heavy band Űcean Machine After hearing both albums Ie realized the beauty of Devin Townsend music, Ie never heard anything so moving, and powerful since then, which was a pretty long time agoDevin Townsend has been my favorite artist of all timeand now I was going to see the band in person, I was pretty excited, I know that it supposed to be all about the music, but fuck that, this is Devin Townsend!! the guy who brought - Strapping Young Lad, Ocean Machine, Terria, Infinity, Punky Bruster, and Physicist!! I was amazed that Devin was right in front of me; I shook his hand and got him to sign my CD booklet. I was pretty happy from that, but the main thing was his performance.
He actually played my favorite Devin song ŭife actually everything he played was just so goodI sang along with every song and enjoyed every second of it. He also played a real long solo from the song Ţwayand linked it to another song called ťeep peaceit linked really well, and it only showed how good Devin is on his guitarita.
He also played Ŧarth Daywhich is a musical masterpiece, and hearing it live was pretty gratifyingDevin performanceit deffinitly something that everyone should go see at least once!! or am I just overreacting on a simple performancefter all, you're just talking meat...and music?
Well, it's just entertainment folks!!!!!!
