A suicide bomber attempted to blow himself up on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253 during a flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Detroit, but his explosive device malfunctioned when he set it off during the approach to Detroit. The plane landed safely in Detroit and all 278 passengers and 11 crew members were unharmed. The failed suicide bomber, Nigerian citizen Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was sentenced to life in prison by the United States. al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was responsible.
