As for the game itself… Well, Tiger never was known for top notch gameplay, and this one doesn't do it any favors. In fact, this one kinda disappointed me even by their standards. For starters, well, just take a look at this beast:
Is that a gaudy design or isn't it? And what the hell is up with that teeny-tiny screen up there?? They give you a huge case design with an itty bitty screen that belongs on one of their watch games. Even Tiger's earlier games had a better screen than this.
The gameplay was also a letdown even compared to other Tiger games that came out long before this one. All you pretty much do is move XV-mon back and forth along the bottom of the screen, trying to fight off the waves of bad digimon that seem to just fall out of the sky. If three of the enemy digimon make it past you, it's game over.
It's kinda like Space Invaders with digimon. You get 10 points for every enemy you block, and it pretty much goes on and on until you lose. It's basically a game where you're simply trying to beat your high score. From time to time, a Digivice will appear on the left side of the screen. Those are worth 50 points if you grab them. There's also a mode button that allows you to select a harder mode where the enemies fall faster and in greater numbers.
In case you're curious, the enemy digimon consist of RedVegiemon, Gekomon, Mushmon, and Woodmon. I've seen other case designs; when they were in stores, I recall seeing one with Miyako and Hawkmon and another with Hikari and Tailmon. I'm not sure just how different they are from this, however.
Well, I wish I had more to say about this, but there's really nothing else to the game. As I said, I was a little disappointed. It really would have been better off as one of the wristwatch games. But like most Tiger games, it's still an okay diversion once in a while, and it's certainly an interesting find as a Digimon collector.
