Asuka comes from Germany where she was trained at NERV's second branch by her love interest Kaji Ryoji. At 14 years of age she has already graduated from college and has an understanding of advanced physics. Strangely enough, she does terribly on all her homework in school at Tokyo 3, mostly because she can't read Japanese symbols well!

Asuka is the most hotheaded character in this series. Whenever Shinji (or anyone else) looks at her the wrong way she practically explodes, and sometimes lets loose a string of German explicatives. Her desire is to become the greatest Eva pilot of all time, and because Shinji synch's so much better with his Eva, she has her work cut out for her. This fuels her hatred for Shinji. However, near the end of the series we see inklings of her true feelings for him. Although she won't admit it, she does love him.

Asuka is an emotionally distraught girl. Like Shinji, she lost her mother at a young age. Her mother went insane and eventually committed suicide. At that point she decided to "grow up" and become completely independent. Because she won't receive help from anyone often puts her into dangerous situations when fighting against the angels.

Asuka is a fantastic character. Her outrageous behavior make you dually love her and hate her. Although not quite as complex as Shinji, she does reveal true human emotions that makes the audience care about what happens to her.
