    Synopsis:

-Based upon the acclaimed "Naohito Takahashi" manga of the same name, "Berserk" is an epic character driven story of love, redemption and moreover; fate. A both violent and sprawling fantasy setting worthy of the darkest comic incarnations; the likes of which "Hitoshi Yasuda" and even "Tolkein" would be proud of. It's story pits an ambitious 'up-and-coming' royal and his mercenary best friend "Gatts" (pronounced "Gutts" in Media Blaster's American dub release). On the first end is the incomporably charasmatic "Griffith", the pale-faced, blue-haired sometimes even melaglomaniac friend of Gatts, the worthy warrior set on tackling his heart's deepest and darkest secrets; as well as a torn history which legions of haunting spirits claim solemn diminion over. However, what is most interesting about Berserk's storyline components (aside from an extremely riveting narrative) is mainly the unlikely and moving relationship of the two leads: "Gatts" and "Griffith". While at the same time extremely complex and emotionally torn, "Griffith" remains the would-be centerpiece of Berserk's storyline; an honor however which is bestowed upon the sometimes brash but always heartwarming Gatts. He is a compasionate and sometimes stubborn man, who is torn by the predicament of his recent jointment of the band "The Hawks"; which his friend Griffith holds key control over, much as a leader and as both a ruler on the chess board. While all the mayhem erupts within an all-out war between two huge armies, pitted against for hundreds of years (with Griffith and Gatts holding the probable antithesis on one of the sides). A new supernatural element in the mix of things may give the two warriors a run for their money, in a finale of sorts which is both revealing and emotionally devastating if not a bit untidy. Despite it's minor shortcomings, "Berserk" is sure to please it's legions of anime fans with it's driven story, thoughtful dialogue and compelling characterizations. Adding to the joy of the situation are great supporting characters such as the mercenary with a past "Caska", the only really true female of the series. Also present, is a knockout musical score and sprawling battle scenes that would make many Hollywood epics insanely jealous (not to mention several fantasy animes). Berserk is foremost bracing, and above all well-acted and incredibly moving. And is also, moreover; simply anime film making at it's finest. -S.C.
