Over 500 years old, Kurama is really a wolf spirit known as Yoko. One day, a hunter wounded Kurama, so he fled to Earth and took over the womb of a young woman, becoming her unborn son, Suichi. Kurama planned on waiting long enough for his spirit body to recover before leaving the family and returning to Spirit World, where he would continue his exploits as a thief. While on Earth, Kurama began to learn emotions such as love, feelings he had never gotten from anyone. Gradually, Kurama began to accept his role as Suichi and came to love his Earth mother as if she were his own.
After 15 years had passed, Kurama's mother grew gravely ill. Not wishing to see the woman he had caused so much trouble for die, Kurama went with Hiei and Gouki with intentions of retrieving the Forlorn Hope, a mirror which would reflect it's users greatest desire during a full moon.
Stolen just days after Yusuke's appointment as Spirit Detective, Kurama left the group to use the Forlorn Hope, opting to meet Yusuke and return the Forlorn Hope as soon as he had made the wish. However, the Forlorn Hope's price was rather large: in exchange for his mother's life, Kurama had to give his own. Yusuke, knowing what a mother looks like after she's lost her son, jumped in and told the mirror to take his life instead. The Forlorn Hope acknowledged Yusuke's noble deed and completed Kurama's wish without taking any life, restoring Kurama's mother, and earning Yusuke the respect of Kurama, who aided him in defeating Hiei and was of help during the ordeal in Maze Castle.
