Where Would You Be?

by V-Babe

A/N: This is my first Songfic AND my first Yu Yu Hakusho fic, and as usual with most of my fics, it’s a sappy and somewhat cheesy romance…please go easy on me! ^^;;;;

Keiko was sitting on a park bench, Yusuke next to her. She didn’t think Yusuke had heard the last thing she said…or anything else she had said for the past few minutes, either. “Yusuke, are you even listening to me?” she asked softly and sadly.

She could barely hear herself, she didn’t know how she expected Yusuke to hear her. So why did she want to cry when he continued to stare off into the distance?

I wonder where your heart is, ‘cause it sure don't feel like it's here
Sometimes I think you wish that I would just disappear

“Yusuke…” she whispered. Yusuke continued to ignore her, or so she thought. Maybe he didn’t want her around right now? She had just seen him sitting there and decided to sit next to him out of the blue. Maybe he just wanted to be alone, but at least he could’ve responded to her hello, right? Finally she stood.

Have I got it all wrong?
Have you felt this way long?
Are you already gone?

Keiko started slowly walking away, feeling her heart break in two as she did. It wasn’t just the fact Yusuke had ignored her right now, but lately he’d seemed more and more distant. She sighed deeply. Maybe he had his reasons for growing so distant from her…

Do you feel lonely when you're here by my side?
Does the sound of freedom echo in your mind?

She’d seen him around school of course, when he bothered to attend. Yusuke didn’t attend school as much as he occasionally graced the administration with his presence, Keiko thought with a slight smile. But just before she could speak to him, that Botan person always caught up with him first, and whenever Keiko spoke to him when SHE was around, he acted like he and Botan had been talking about something Keiko wasn’t supposed to hear.

A thought suddenly struck Keiko. She froze in her spot, looking back at Yusuke. Although he was about seventy feet away from her now, she could still see him staring off into space. Was he thinking about Botan? Was THAT the reason Yusuke had ignored her just now?

Do you wish you were by yourself?
Or that I was someone else?
…Anyone else?

“That’s it,” she thought, “I can’t believe I was so stupid to think Yusuke would go out with me when he’s got Botan…she’s a lot more like him anyway…I mean sure he’s a Spirit Detective, but does that give him the right to totally ignore me?”

Almost in tears, Keiko turned around and started running. She could barely hear Kuwabara yelling something at Yusuke. Doubtless he was challenging Yusuke to another fight. But that was the last of her concerns…

Where would you be if you weren't here with me?
Where would you go if you were single and free?
Who would you love?
Would it be me?
Where would you be?

“What’s the deal?” Yusuke demanded angrily.

Kuwabara appeared enraged as he shook Yusuke violently by the collar. “Did you not see Keiko right next to you? Who do you think you are to just ignore her like that? Even I’ve got manners enough to…”

“Kwitcherwhinin’,” Yusuke ordered as he shoved Kuwabara away. “And what do you mean Keiko being next to me?”

“Well, look for yourself! You’d better look pretty far into the distance, Uramashi!”

Yusuke glanced out of the corner of his eye and saw Keiko running away. He continued to stare until she vanished in the distance

“Do you have any idea what Keiko went through while you were gone?” Kuwabara yelled. “You’ve been awfully cold to her, Urameshi, she might have been better off if you stayed dead!”

In the back of his mind, Yusuke couldn’t help but wonder if Kuwabara was right. He’d been wondering about what would come next out of the Spirit World, and if it was anything like Hiei’s transformed state, he was going to have a rough fight ahead of him. All he knew was, he never wanted Keiko to be in danger again because of him.

He expressed this concern to Kuwabara, adding “And she takes so much trash from the teachers because of me!”

I don't wanna hold you back, no I don't wanna slow you down
I don't wanna make you feel like you are tied up and bound
'Cause that's not what love's about

“Don’t you think if that bothered Keiko she would have left you by now?” Kuwabara yelled again. “Be a man, Urameshi! ‘Cause if you don’t shape up and start treating Keiko better, she may just leave you for someone else who appreciates her!”

Leaving Kuwabara in the dust, Yusuke raced off after Keiko. “Oh, man, I’ve messed up again….is there any way she can forgive me this time?”

If there's no chance we can work it out,
Tell me now

In the back of his mind, Yusuke couldn’t help but wonder if Kuwabara was right. Did Keiko really deserve somebody better than him?

Oh, tell me tell me now
Where would you be if you weren't here with me?
Where would you go if you were single and free?
Who would you love?
Would it be me?
Where would you be?

Keiko finally ran out of breath and stopped to sit on a bench to rest. Still, she couldn’t keep her mind off Yusuke…

Have I become the enemy?

Yusuke continued running in the direction he thought Keiko had gone, all the time wondering how Keiko put up with him sometimes…

Is it hard to be yourself in my company?

“Hey, pretty girl,” an-all-too-familiar voice said with a sarcastic grin.

Keiko looked up to see one of the punks that had harassed her while Yusuke was dead, and her spine tingled in fear. Almost sure this was the leader of the gang, she jumped up to run, but was soon overtaken by the punk who grabbed her arm. Out of breath, she could barely scream for him to let go, and she had a feeling Kuwabara and his friends wouldn’t save her this time…

“GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF OF HER, YOU FREAK!!!”

The punk was momentarily stunned by Yusuke’s shout and blow to his side, causing her to loosen his grip just enough for Keiko to twist out of his grasp and run a few feet away before collapsing on the Earth, gasping for air and aching from fatigue. She could barely hear the shouts and impacts from the two men’s punches over the roaring in her ears.

Where would you be if you weren't here with me?

“I thought you were dead!”

“Yeah, well, I’m alive and kickin’ and I DON’T take kindly to people like you messing with my woman!”

Where would you go if you were single and free?

The fight was short and disappointing for Yusuke. The thug had only taken a few punches then run away. “Coward,” he muttered as he dusted himself off. “Couldn’t even put up a decent fight…”

Who would you love?
Would it be me?
Where would you be?

“Yu…suke…”

Keiko barely breathed out his name, causing Yusuke to run to her side and put an arm around her shoulders. “Don’t talk, Keiko, you need to catch your breath…” Keiko couldn’t help but notice the anxiety in his voice. “Now just shake your head at me, Keiko, did that guy just hurt you?”

Where would you be?

Keiko shook her head in a negative, still panting. She felt Yusuke relax slightly. “Keiko…Kuwabara told me you were next to me on that bench,” he admitted. “I didn’t mean to look like I was ignoring you, it wasn’t what you thought, y’see Botan’s been talking about this threat from the Spirit World and it kind of got on my mind and I might not have heard you come up although that’s really a lame excuse but you gotta believe me Keiko I just don’t…”

Where would you go?

Yusuke paused, then looked away from Keiko. “I just don’t want you to be caught up in the middle of any more of this Spirit World stuff. I don’t want you hurt because of what I do as a Spirit Detective.”

At that, Keiko launched herself at Yusuke, throwing her arms around him.

Who would you love?

“Whoa, hey, you’re still catching your breath, aren’t you? Don’t go wearing yourself out!”

“Thank you, Yusuke.”

Keiko was still breathing heavily, but her panting had stopped and she was able to speak normally.

Would it be me?

“Hey,” Yusuke replied as he hugged Keiko slightly, smiling with relief that she was all right. “Don’t mention it. It’s embarrassing.”

Keiko giggled slightly as she hugged Yusuke tighter. Yusuke, in response, tightened his slight hug into a protective embrace.
