SailorMoon R is the name of the 2nd TV season of SailorMoon. This movie came out in the middle of the SailorMoon R TV series. The events that happen in this movie do not really affect the storyline of the TV series. However, the movie may give you a deeper understanding of why the girls are such good friends and will also give you an insight on Mamoru's past.

This is my favorite anime movie. I've seen quite a bit ranging from American hits like "Ghost in the Shell" and "Akira" to Japanese favorites like "City Hunter" and "X" to popular stuff like Tenchi Muyo movies and Slayers movies. And the SailorMoon R movie is unmatched in intensity and emotion. It's action packed from start to finish. Probably the most violent SailorMoon episode I've seen(it's not THAT violent, just more so than your average ep). It has humor. It has drama. And the characters really shine. I know of quite a few non-SailorMoon fans who like this movie as well.

The movie begins with a flashback scene. Mamoru, as a boy, cried when his friend leaves. The friend promises to return one day. Fast forward to the present: He comes to Mamoru, shakes his hand and says, "I haven't forgotten our promise. I brought back lots of flowers." Mamoru doesn't quite remember so the stranger leaves. Mamoru stands there thinking, "Fiore, could it be?"

Next thing you know, a flower sucks the energy out of people. After the senshi put a stop to it, Fiore comes out with a flower(Xenian or Kusenian) attached to his body. Fiore gets mad and attacks the senshi. He beats the crap out of them too. As he lunges for SailorMoon, Tuxedo Kamen comes to her rescue. He takes a blow meant for Usagi and is carried off.

Now the senshi discover that the Xenian flower is evil. Fiore and the flower plan to plant many Xenian flower seeds on earth so that the entire Earth will be destroyed. Using the Sailor Teleport, the senshi travel to the asteroid where Fiore is stationed. After destroying many of the flowers, Fiore captures the inner senshi leaving SailorMoon with a choice. She chooses and eventually, she gets her energy sucked as well. As Fiore is about to kill her, Mamoru uses his last bit of strength to stop Fiore. Seeing he has no allies, Fiore loses it. The Xenian flower takes full control. The senshi stopped the invasion of the Xenian flower seeds but then the asteroid begins to hurl toward Earth.

As SailorMoon tries to use her ginzuishou(Imperium Silver Crystal), her brooch is grabbed. After a struggle(and a flashback sequence), Fiore disappears and the Xenian flower dies off. With her last bit of strength, Usagi uses the ginzuishou to steer the asteroid. With the help of the other 4 senshi, (and Moon Revenge playing in the background)Earth is safe once again.

Keep in mind I've left off a lot of details better left to be watched. The entire movie will keep you in suspense. It's emotionally packed, especially in the latter half. People who think Usagi's only a klutz will change their mind after this movie. I found new respect for her after this movie. Many of the things that happen aren't expected to happen. All of these factors contribute to my high opinion of this wonderful movie. Truly a masterpiece.
