Here’s my first attempt at a songfic. It’s actually more like a music video script thingy, so it’s short, but oh, well. Good enough. ^_^ Kinda angsty, I guess, and shounen ai warnings.

Disclaimers: song sung by Bryan White (from "Quest For Camelot"); Heero and Duo do not belong to me (I wish). These are not my characters, blahblahblah, don’t sue, ‘kay?

---------------------------------------------------
Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky I stand alone
I share my world with no one else
All by myself, I stand alone.

Duo stands in front of a door, hand raised to knock. He hesitates, then knocks. He waits, and when nothing happens, silently opens the door and slips inside, glancing around the room.

I know the sound of each rock and stone
And I embrace what others fear
You are not to roam in this forgotten place
Just the likes of me are welcomed here.

Heero is sitting at his desk, eyes glued to the screen of his laptop, fingers flying over the keyboard. He ignores Duo, who is still standing in the doorway, looking uncertain. Duo shuts the door behind him, glances at Heero sadly, and pads over to his bed.

Everything breathes
And I know each breath
For me it means life
For others, it's death.
It's perfectly balanced
Perfectly planned
More than enough
For this man.

Heero is watching Duo’s reflection on the screen of the laptop as the Shinigami pilot sits on his bed and reaches under his pillow as if touching something comforting before sighing and turning off the lamp, curling up on the bed to sleep. A small frown tugs at Heero’s lips, perplexed by the boy’s unusual silence.

Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky I stand alone
I share my world with no one else
All by myself, I stand alone.

It is hours later. Heero quietly shuts off his computer and turns in his chair, stretching, his eyes wandering inevitably towards the boy stretched out on one of the beds, still clothed and snoring quietly. Heero shudders a little, closing his eyes, a sudden flash of memory showing himself self destructing, a dead look in his eyes.
He recalls how Quatre told him how devastated it seemed to make Duo.

I've seen your world through these very eyes
Don't come any closer, don't even try
I've felt all the pain and I've heard all the lies
But in my world there's no compromise.

In his mind, he sees Duo bursting into the hospital to save him; Duo laughing even in the face of death. Shots of Duo fighting, Duo smirking that infuriating smirk of his; complaining loudly as Heero stoically sets his own broken leg. Then a memory of Heero secretly watching Duo, a small smile on his lips.

Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky I stand alone
I share my world with no one else
All by myself, I stand alone.

Heero walks over to Duo’s bed and tentatively lays a hand on the boy’s forehead, brushing the bangs from his eyes, then gently running his fingers along the smooth cheek, shuddering again as Duo mumbles something, moving in his sleep.

All by myself, I stand alone.

Heero closes his eyes once more in painful regret, slowly pulling his hand away. He turns away and slips silently into his own bed, reaching out and turning off his lamp. He turns his back on the other figure, eyes squeezed tightly shut, his whisper falling on deaf ears. “I don’t deserve you…”

All by myself, I stand alone.
