Episode Fourteen - It’s Not Over ‘Till Matt Sings

TK: Last time on Digimon, the Dark Triad destroyed the Tsunomon caves with the help of Dracomon. A lone Tsunomon came and told us about the disaster, and we agreed to help rebuild the homes. Unfortunately, Crystal and her digimon, Toxemon showed up and nearly ruined our plans be using the shell machine to switch our bodies with our partner digimon! We continued to work, and when Crystal returned, she changed us back to normal. Sora exploded at Crystal for destroying the Tsunomon and intruding in Digiworld. I wonder what the Dark Triad’s next move will be?

<Digimon Opening>

(Scene: A very large room with stone walls, a low ceiling, and sunlight streaming in through tall windows on one wall. The room has a full-sized running track with a swimming pool and weightlifting equipment in the center area. Solomon and Crystal plus Toxemon and Mechimon enter through a door on stage left.)

CRYSTAL, (staring with glittering eyes at the pool): WOW! Hey Solomon, how come you’ve never brought me here? I, like, LOVE swimming!

MECHIMON, (sweatdrop, which disappears and leaves a red-brown rust stain): I cannot swim... I would rust.

TOXEMON, (smacking him with her tail): No one asked you, y’big junk heap.

(Mechimon, despite having no movable facial features, looks offended and backs away.)

CRYSTAL: Yeah, so what’s the deal?

SOLOMON: ...You never asked to go to the gym.

(Everyone falls over but Solomon, who sweatdrops and shrugs.)

SOLOMON: Anyway, you won’t be swimming for a while. You gotta work up some sweat before you go an’ wash it off.

CRYSTAL: Hah, that’s right! Well, I’ll see you later, Toxemon, you have a lot of training to do, I’ll just be over here swimming...

TOXEMON: Hey!

SOLOMON: I don’t think so.

CRYSTAL: Eh?

SOLOMON: You’ll both train.

CRYSTAL: WHY?

SOLOMON: A digimon does most of the fighting, but its owner also needs to be ready to join the fight. A Dark Digidestined and his servant form a pair that’s only as strong as the weakest member. What would you do if Tai an’ his little crew came to beat up on you while our digimon were fighting?

CRYSTAL, (looking skeptical and tapping Solomon’s forehead): That was surprisingly deep, coming from a dimwit like you.

SOLOMON: Look, I can arm-wrestle Mechimon... um, sometimes. Wouldn’t it be cool to be strong enough to bench-press Toxemon?

(The scene switches to Crystal’s imagination, where she poses with lots of muscles. Muscle-Crystal laughs with a deep voice, and then the scene fades.)

CRYSTAL: Ew, no! I don’t want to be some kind of butch, muscle-bound Amadon!

SOLOMON: Amazon.

CRYSTAL: Whatever, just tell me what to do that won’t make me gross-looking.

SOLOMON: Okay, we’ll start by stretching. Mechimon, help me show ‘em. (He and Mechimon go through some simple stretches, and Crystal and Toxemon follow.)

CRYSTAL: That’s not so tough. Are we done?

SOLOMON: No way. Run a mile, let’s see how you do.

CRYSTAL, (looking at the track): I think I can do it! Just once around, right?

SOLOMON: Nope! That track’s a quarter-mile. Four times around.

(Crystal and Toxemon both groan, but they start jogging around the track.)

CRYSTAL, (panting): Somehow... I... thought... this... would... be... more... about... fighting!

SOLOMON, (yelling through a megaphone): Don’t talk! You’ll waste breath and energy! Stop slouching! I want to see SWEAT! Toxemon, keep that tail up!

TOXEMON: He’s like... some kind of...

CRYSTAL: Drill sergeant?

TOXEMON: Yeah, that!

(Crystal and Toxemon finally make it their fourth time around, but they collapse just short of the finish line.)

CRYSTAL: Ugh... water...

SOLOMON, (through the megaphone): You can have water when you’re done. An’ I’m not moving from this spot ‘til you cross that line!

(They both crawl forward and collapse on the finish line. Solomon grins and walks over to them before putting two water bottles on the track in their reach. They drink the water quickly and fall back, sighing.)

SOLOMON: I’ve never seen a slower mile, but I think you broke the record for fastest drinking... okay, now it’s time for -

CRYSTAL and TOXEMON: SWIMMING! (They both find new strength, jump up, and run into the pool.)

SOLOMON: Well, you can swim if you want, but I was gonna say it’s time for battle training.

TOXEMON: Really? I can finally be strong?

SOLOMON: Well, let’s see how you do first.

(He walks over to a wall and presses a large red button. Agumon, Okomon, and Palmon stuffed dummies fall from the ceiling on strings. He comes back and flicks Agumon in the head with one finger, and it wobbles on its string.)

TOXEMON: All right, lemme at ‘im... (She jumps out of the pool, runs for the Agumon dummy, and jumps in the air to hit it with her tail. The backround turns blue as a crunching noise sounds. The Agumon doll doesn’t move at all.) Owwwww! What the heck? You just flicked it and it moved!

SOLOMON: Heh. You’re weaker than I thought. These dolls’re full of sand, so they’re heavy. Hmmm... maybe this one’s more your speed. (He goes to the Palmon dummy and lifts it easily from the bottom with one hand.) Try again, and concentrate first on what you wanna do to it.

(Toxemon stands and stares at the Palmon dummy. She keeps staring... suddenly the screen turns blue again and she runs, trying the same move as before. This time, the dummy rips apart at the neck and sand spills all over the place.)

SOLOMON, (clapping slowly): Good job. You might have what it takes to serve my sister after all.

TOXEMON, (smiling): Crystal! I did it! You try one now, I want to see YOUR strength.

CRYSTAL, (sweatdrop): Um... okay...

SOLOMON: Remember, concentrate and then do it.

(Crystal scowls at the dummy of Okomon. She looks at it with determination in her face, then runs up to it and punches it right in the stomach. Sand bursts through the other side as her fist passes right through.)

SOLOMON: Whoa...

CRYSTAL, (face turning blue and twitching): Ouch... my arm...

SOLOMON: Oooh... we’ll add control to the next lesson. Um. Anyway, you don’t always have time to concentrate and plan an attack. (He nods to Mechimon, who approaches Toxemon.) Sometimes, you dunno what’s coming... MECHIMON!

(Mechimon suddenly punches Toxemon, and she flies into the Agumon dummy and knocks it right off its string.)

CRYSTAL: Hey, what do you think you’re... EEEK! (Solomon comes at her with a punch, and she barely dodges aside.) Hey, quit it!

SOLOMON, (trying a side kick): Defend yourself! ATTACK ME!

(Crystal frowns at Solomon and nervously aims a punch at his stomach. It connects but does no damage to the big guy. Toxemon is having more success; she hits Mechimon with her tail and makes him trip over. The scene fades.)

Scene: A huge busy city in Digiworld. Digimon of all kinds are bustling about. We see DemiDevimon strolling down the street, not noticing all the chaos.

Demidevimon: This is getting to be pathetic. I’ve been running away from the inevitable ever since HoyoTerremotomon and those brats defeated me. <sighs> Eventually, Damien will find out and send a search party out for my hide. <stops walking and looks up> Why does this have to happen to me? <suddenly, hears some commotion up the street a bit> Hmm?

Octovamon: …and you won’t be disappointed, of course! Our opening tomorrow night will knock the fur right off your head! As the manager of Modem City’s new performance hall, I guarantee an exceptional show!!

Demidevimon: Octovamon…<Digimon Analyzer> She’s a data-type. Not much of a fighter, if you ask me. Though, she could break glass with that voice of hers. <trots over to the theater> Wonder what the buzz is about? <bumps into a large Kiwimon> Hey!

Kiwimon: Hm? <looks down; he’s unhurt> Who are you?

Demidevimon: None of your business! Say…what do you know about this theater here?

Kiwimon: Modem Hall? It’s holding a grand opening tomorrow night. Octovamon’s trying to get as many digimon to come as possible.

Demidevimon: Really? Hmm…<looks sneaky, and walks away from the Kiwimon>…with a whole bunch of digimon in one place, I’ll have a nice opportunity to purify the whole lot of them! <cackles> The Modem Theater won’t be around to even see it’s own opening!

Scene: At first, we see Maria off by herself playing her violin under the shade of the trees in the forest. We then switch to the rest of the group who are finishing up lunch; soup over a small fire. Tai and Agumon look stuffed, as does Allison. Matt’s listening to Maria’s playing, humming along as he cleans up.

Gabumon: What’s that you’re humming, Matt?

Matt: Maria’s playing some Bach. I’ve heard it before.

Tai: Hey! You should take out your harmonica and play with her!

Matt: (sweatdrop) Um, I don’t think that would sound right…

(Maria plays her last chord and finishes. She walks back to the group)

Maria: (sigh) That felt good. (She packs up her instrument)

Allison: I would have brought my cello and played with you, but it’s way too big for travel. Good thing your violin is so light.

Maria: Yeah. I’m glad I brought it. It’s kinda keeping me sane; this whole adventure thing is new to me.

TK: Matt plays, too! I’ve been trying to get him to play his electric guitar for me for months, but he refuses!

Matt: (blushing) TK! Shut up!!

Tai: YOU play the GUITAR? That’s news to me!

Mimi: How long have you been playing?

Matt: (still blushing) Er…not long, I suck right now.

Sora: No you don’t!

Matt: (blushing some more) Wha?!

Sora: (smiles) I was walking past your apartment one time and I heard you playing! You sound great!

Matt: (blushing) Um….well…

Gabumon: Matt also told me he was thinking about starting a rock band.

Tai: Sweet! I get to be the drummer!!

Matt: (ears reddening) Wha?!

Joe: That must mean Matt can sing, too!

Kari: Why don’t you sing for us, Matt?

Mimi: Can I have your autograph before you become famous?

Matt: (explodes) NO WAY! I’M NOT going to  PLAY or SING or ANYTHING! Now, LEAVE ME ALONE!!

(Group silences, except for Izzy, who has his head in his laptop, busily typing away)

Tai: Geez, man…

Matt: (looks apologetic) Uh…I…I’m sorry. I went a little bezerk…

Maria: That’s OK. If you don’t want to play or sing, we understand.

Matt: Well…

Tai: Humphf. Whatever.

Patamon: Hey TK! What’s that over there?

TK: Hm?

(The group turns to see a small t.v. set on the ground behind them)

Sora: That’s weird…

Tai: Let’s see what’s on! (he walks over and turns on the t.v.)

Allison: Sweet!! I wanna see if Sailor Moon is on!!

Maria: Me too!!!!

(group sweatdrops)

News Anchor: We now bring you this breaking news bulletin!

Mimi: It works!

News Anchor: Modem City was just attacked just five minutes from the hour by a small Demidevimon with a bomb! The Demidevimon went straight for the city’s newest attraction, Octovamon’s Modem Hall! Ten minutes after the attack, after as many as digimon could be evacuated, the bomb detonated, destroying the theater. Rescue crews are rushing in to find any survivors.

Gatomon: Demidevimon!

Kari: That’s awful!!

Tai: We need to get over there right NOW!

(we hear a rustle of bushes, and Matt and Garurumon jump out)

Matt: What are we waiting for? Come on!

Scene: Everyone and their champion digimon (except for Kari and Gatomon, who ride with Conegamon) are flying out of the forest and across the desert towards Modem City.

Ikkakumon: (lumbering through the sand very awkwardly) Sorry Joe, I guess I’m not built for speed…

Sora: (yelling down to Joe) Do you need a ride? Flying is a lot faster!

Joe: No, don’t waste time! Just get there fast and we’ll catch up!

Togemon: I need the exercise anyway!

Birdramon: We’ll save a little of Demidevimon for you to Harpoon Torpedo! (she takes off fast with Kabuterimon, Angemon, and Conegamon. Garurumon takes off at a high speed, leaving a thin dust wave behind)

Tai: (grunting) This would be a lot easier if Agumon could warp-digivolve.

Greymon: Don’t worry about it, Tai. When the moment comes, I think the impossible will happen!

Tai: What are you talking about?

Greymon: You have to admit Tai, weren’t you a little surprised when Okomon and Topomon were able to digivolve to Ultimate? I think we can expect great things from them. There has to be a big reason for why they’re here.

Tai: (grins) Maybe you’re right. I hope so.

Scene: We see a huge pile of rubble and wires in the midst of the large Modem City. Smoke is rising from some areas, and no one is in sight. Suddenly, Demidevimon jumps up onto the highest piece of gravel with an air of triumph.

Demidevimon: HA! NO one is a match for the likes of THIS one right here!! Damien will surely pay me well for this little errand…

(We see a slab of concrete budge, then fall over, revealing Octovamon, who is coughing and swatting the dust away)

Octovamon: Wha<cough> what has happened to my creation?!

Demidevimon: (turns to her, grinning evilly) So, you survived my little fireworks display? That won’t do. (flies above her, preparing to attack) I’ll just finish this job off and be on my way!!

Garurumon: (charging Demidevimon with Matt on his back)Howling BLASTER!!

Demidevimon: (hit, he falls to the ground) Aaaargh!! What in the name of…?!

Matt: (to Octovamon) Are you all right?

Octovamon: (shaking from fright) Y-yes.

Sora: (yelling from Birdramon) We’re coming!!

Maria: (from atop Conegamon) It’s Demidevimon all right!

Demidevimon: How?! How could you possibly have found out so quickly?!

TK: Don’t you watch the news? (dismounts Angemon, who flies above him, preparing to attack)

Demidevimon: Angemon?! You…How could you be alive?

TK: Huh? What do you mean?

Demidevimon: (shaking with rage, but still grinning) I thought I had gotten rid of you…it seems that I failed to finish the job…

Angemon: What?!

TK: (thinking) Is this the same digimon that killed Angemon before…?

Conegamon: What are you waiting for, Angemon?!

Ikkakumon: Harpoon Torpedo!!

Demidevimon: Oomphf!! (he braces against the impact, much weakened by the attack) If it weren’t for this cursed rookie form of mine…you’d all be dog-meat by now.

Joe: (yelling from Ikkakumon’s back)Who sent you, Demidevimon?!

Demidevimon: HA! You think I would just throw that information at you like it was nothing?! (he flaps his wings, taking off. As he flies away, he yells back at them) This isn’t the last of me you’ll ever see, digidestined!

Kabuterimon: Follow him!!

Izzy: No, wait a second. We’re needed here more. Octovamon, was anyone else injured in the explosion?

Octovamon: (getting up, dusting herself off) No, fortunately we evacuated before the bomb was detonated. I was just a bit slow.

(Tai, Greymon, Mimi, Togemon, Allison, Terremotomon charge in)

Mimi: Look at this place!!

Allison: That little blue fur ball has some nerve; this thing just went up, didn’t it?

Octovamon: (now sobbing into her hands) This is-is-is unbelieeeeeevable!! My wonderful creation…this is a complete and utter MESS!!! WAAAH!!!!

(the champions de-digivolve, and Gabumon walks to Octovamon, to comfort her)

Gabumon: There, there. That’s just what we came for! W can have this theater back up in no time.

Octovamon: Well, actually the technical term is hall…but, really? Don’t you think this project is a bit big for you guys?

Joe: Well, yeah-(Allison clamps her hand on his mouth)

Allison: Of COURSE we can! We’re the digidestined!! We’ll have this baby up and running within the month!!

Joe: (pushing her hand away) Hold ON a second!! Do we look like a bunch of engineers to you?! Even if we had any idea on how to make this hall again, SAFELY, it’s take us over a year!

Gomamon: Leave it to Old Reliable to burst every possible bubble in sight…

Joe: I’m SERIOUS! We have much more important issues on our hands right now! If we stay here and try to build this thing, we’ll be extremely vulnerable to the Dark Triad.

Octovamon: The Dark Triad? Are you…going to get rid of them?

Sora: That’s the plan so far.

Octovamon: Well then! (punching her fist in the air) I can help you! I’d like nothing better than to boot those three out of Digi World myself!

Kari: But what about your theater?

Octovamon: (annoyed) It’s a hall.

TK: We appreciate your offer, Octovamon, but this city needs you a lot more than we do. If you leave this huge mess here, everyone will panic!

Patamon: The last thing we need is a huge mob of crazed digimon running around!

Octovamon: I suppose you’re right…

Maria: I’m surprised. I thought news of us trying to defeat the Dark Triad would have already reached around Digi World. You guys are heroes here, aren’t you?

Okomon: Well, we digimon don’t spend that much time catching up on current events. The most I ever learned about what was happening outside the village was via TV news.

Mimi: Wouldn’t it be great if we could do a commercial or something and advertise us?! I was born to be on TV!!

Octovamon: I’m just worried about my hall. Who would want to see a concert here with all this rubble around?

Tai: I got it, I got it! We just film the stage, and cover up the rocks and stuff with decorations! I bet you have connections to a TV station somewhere, don’t ya, Octovamon?

Octovamon: (blinks, the lightbulb clicking on) Why, I do…

Joe: Right! We can have a little concert here, and use it to advertise us so digimon know our cause!!

Maria: That’s brilliant, Joe!!

Joe: (blushing) Well, I, I mean, um…

Gatomon: We’ve got one problem, though; who wants to play at the concert?

Kari: Can you sing, Octovamon?

Octovamon: (nods) Yes, but I’d be to busy running around worrying about all the messy details. (sighs) Who wants to play at the Ground Zero concert…?

(Suddenly, they all turn around and stare at Matt, who is standing on a large slab of concrete, which slightly resembles a stage)

Matt: (blinking) What? What’re you staring at?

Tai: (snickers) Oh, nothing…we just found our star performer…

Scene: We see the sun starting to set as the digidestined busy themselves around the rubble, which is starting to be covered with Christmas lights and filled with folding chairs. A camera crew, composed of mainly Gazimon, is setting up near the back. Someone has set up a curtain around one of the larger slabs of concrete, creating a make shift stage. We cut to a make shift dressing room back stage, where we see Mimi and Tai trying to hold down Matt as the struggle to do his makeup.

Matt: Lemme GOOOO!!!!

Tai: Come on man…(holding a lipstick applicator between his teeth as he pins Matt’s arm down to make him sit down) …don’t be chicken…

Mimi: (uncaps some blush) Those stage lights will completely wash you out! If we don’t do this, you’ll like Bakemon!

Matt: I’m NOT going out there!! (finally sits, Tai holding his arms back as Mimi steps forward to apply the blush)

Mimi: (arms on her hips) Matt Ishida!! Do you realize how selfish you sound right now?!

Matt: (sweatdrop) Erk.

Mimi: Unless you want to break everyone’s hearts who put all this effort in and destroy any hope we have of getting the digimon’s support, I suggest you cooperate!

Matt: Well…(pouts) Fine.

Tai: There’s my Matt! Don’t worry, bud, you’ll look as cute as Topomon when we’re through with you!

Matt: What?!

Scene: Everyone is seated in the make shift auditorium (Octovamon: HALL!!!) Um, hall. Lights along the sides light only the curtain drawn around the stage, and everyone’s whispering and pointing at the cameras in the back. Mimi then briskly walks onto the stage in front of the curtain, wearing a dazzling green dress, typical of any Oscars award show. She smiles at the camera, and holds up her microphone.

Mimi: Welcome everyone to the first ever performance at Octovamon’s Modem Hall! We’re broadcasting LIVE from Modem City, Server! I’d like to thank you for joining us here tonight. You’re about to here a premier performance from one of the famous digidestined, who saved all your butts four years ago!! Here he is, the amazing, dashing, Matt Ishida!!

(Applause. The curtains are drawn, and we see Matt sitting on a stool with his guitar, looking completely petrified. As the clapping dies down, he continues to stare into the audience, not moving a muscle.)

Tai: (whispering from backstage) What’s wrong with him?! We’re live!!

Sora: Oh, no…poor Matt…

Joe: This is bad…this is really bad…

Mimi: (frowning) I’m not quitting that easy, and neither should he. (motions to get Matt’s attention. He turns slowly, barely moving his head. Mimi whispers loudly)Matt! Remember who you’re doing his for! You can do it!

(He continues to sit there, staring at his friends, who stand there, waiting for his next move. He then takes a deep breath and smiles. He readies his guitar. Mimi smiles, and puts up her microphone)

Mimi: May I present, Matt Ishida!!

(The applause starts up again, and Matt holds up his pick, poised to bring it down on his guitar strings.)

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looked so sad in photographs

I absolutely love her when she smiles

(The curtain behind him comes up, revealing a full band, comprised of Veggiemon and Gazimon. The lights on the stage flash all across the audience, and everyone gets on there feet, dazzled by the music.)

How many days in the year she woke up with hope
But she only found tears
Actin' so insincere
Making the promises never for real
As long as she stands there waiting
Wearing the holes in soles of her shoes
How many days disappear
You look in the mirror so how do you choose
Your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls out quite the same way

You never seem to run out of things to say

(The digidestined are backstage, clapping each other on the back, and shaking each others hands. Mimi is hopping up and down.)

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looked so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her when she smiles

How many lovers would stay
Just to put up with this day after day
How do we wind up this way
Watchin' the mouths for the words I would say
As long as we stand here waiting
Wearing the clothes of the soles I would chose
How do we get there today
If we're walkin' to far from the price of the shoes

(The cameras continue to film in the back. The Gazimon are chatting and tapping there feet to the beat)

Your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls out quite the same way
You never run out of things to say

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looked so sad and lonely then
I absolutely love her when she smiles

(Matt plays the guitar solo, walking over to the side of the stage, smiling at his friends. Sora and Allison are completely breath taken, and Tai is laughing so hard, he leans on Joe, who is smiling proudly at Matt.)

And your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls out quite the same way
You never seem to run out of things to say

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looks so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her

This is the story of a girl
Who's pretty face she hid from the world
And while she looked so sad and lonely there
I absolutely love her

(Several of the digidestined imitate his guitar playing, and the digimon are dancing together in the back. Streamers let loose over the whole hall.)

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looked so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her when she smiles
When she smiles

(Matt’s last chord is lost in the clapping and screams from the audience. The digidestined and digimon rush the stage. Joe and Tai hoist him onto their shoulders, parading him around the stage.  Mimi takes up her microphone.)

Mimi: Thank you, Modem!! This EXCELLENT performance was brought to you by Octovamon and the Digidestined!!

Scene: After the concert, Matt is sitting on the edge of the concrete stage with his guitar. He’s looking up at the moon in the sky, which is the only thing lighting the area, giving it a very light blue look. We hear someone behind him, and he looks to see who it is. Mimi and Maria walk from behind offstage, Maria holding her violin.

Matt: Mimi…Maria…?

Mimi: Good job today, Matt.

Maria: Wanna have a jam session?

Matt: Huh?

Scene: Matt, sitting on a stool playing his guitar, Maria playing her violin, play along to Mimi, singing “Haku”, the theme from the digimon second movie, “Bokura no War Game”.
