Chapter 4:
*****
Even though Dai had said they would need their rest, and she knew it too, Atarashii found herself wandering the halls at one in the morning. After a comforting bowl of Ramen noodles, she went to the library with a need for more information.
She found it in another book about The Seven, complete with pictures. She skipped the chapters on the first four she had known of and found Akiko. She had to agree with Rou; Akiko possessed such grace it seemed impossible for her to be a living person and not a goddess. Her eyes were a piercing green and long tan hair tumbled all the way down to her knees. A kind smile was on her face and Atarashii could feel why Chiko had loved this woman so.
She turned the page again and found a picture of the entire crew, minus Mei and Chiko. Gently, she stroked the miniature Ichi and felt a wail rising her chest. "I wish you, all of you were here to help me," she whispered before collapsing into a racking sob. "I wish I were more like you, Ichi! Everyone thinks that I should be like you and more..." The teardrops stained the page. "But I can't even protect my son!!"
She wept for several minutes, nearly half an hour, before she was able to pull herself from the floor and put the book back up. She sniffled and wiped away the trail the tears had left with the back of her hand. She turned and looked into a mirror, and was shocked at how horrible and wasted she looked. "Now then," she said sternly to herself. "You won't be a help to anyone like this. Crying won't bring Yohotoko back to me."
Atarashii knew what had to be done. She didn't like it, but the fact that she had to leave soon, right now, was inevitable.
As quietly as possible she crept back into her and her husband's room and to the jewelry box. She pulled it open and found her earth pendant inside. Without hesitation, she snapped it around her neck and quickly made sure to take off every other ring and earring on her body; any priceless items would surely draw attention. She was just about to take off the gold ring with the ruby in the middle, representing the South, when she paused to think about not what she was facing...but what she would leave behind: Minami, her friends and loved ones, the girls...
There was no other choice.
Next was the disguise. Wandering around the universe with one of the most recognizable faces in the universe while trying to remain undercover was an idiotic move. Personally, Atarashii despised makeup and avoided it at all costs. But it was essential in this case, so she waved a hand in the air and a bottle of instant hair dye appeared. Atarashii couldn't help but wonder, Am I a Summer or a Winter? Not really having a passion for such things, she optioned to use white.
She wandered into the bathroom and dipped the large pile of blonde hair into the sink. It took a long while and another bottle, but Atarashii eventually had every strand of hair on her head white. When she looked up, she nearly laughed. She looked like her grandmother Betsy!!
Now for the clothes. She sat down and thought long and hard about this and finally decided on a plain pair of purple pants and shirt with a small side-sash colored blue and small leather boots. Gloves finished off the look. Atarashii smiled smugly and thought of how not even Minami would recognize her now.
It was nearly four when she finally took step outside the southern palace. And even though she was heading off into imminent peril, Atarashii felt something akin to the adrenaline she had experienced the day she had left home with Judaiko and Taihen. And look where that had gotten her!
She turned to look up into the window that she knew Minami would look out of, desperately searching for his loved one, the next morn, but she would be long gone by then; that, and her ability of hiding her ki was uncanny. Finding her would be impossible.
"Well...I guess this is goodbye then."
*****
Judaiko wasn't prepared for the thunder of a nearby storm. That caught her attention; Kaioshin-Kai didn't have storms, save the occasional gentle shower, but nothing more. That, and the thunder sounded like it was in the very building!
Minami burst into the room, his size and the fury in his face making him absolutely terrifying. Next to Judaiko, Kibito jerked up in his sleep; the twins could be heard crying in the next room. "Lord Minami! What is it?"
"Atarashii is gone!!"
"What!?" Judaiko shrieked. She rushed out of bed, past Minami, down the hall and into Minami's room where all of the other gods and Guardians were. Sure enough, there was no sign of her to be seen. When she looked at the dresser, she could see her friend's distinctive brown Potara earrings. "Oh, God, no."
She sank to the floor, trembling with fear and anxiety. What had happened to Atarashii? Had someone taken her while they had all been sleeping? Had Mei or one of his goons actually set foot on the holy planet and walked right past the room her children slept in? She let out a soft but deep moan of terror.
From behind her, she felt Kibito's protective arms wrap around and embrace her with all his might. She turned to face him and could see the concern in his face as plain as he could see it in hers. "I am sure that Atarashii is alright, Judaiko."
Shinobi was behind him, holding a shivering Lanlyu and Shizuka in her arms. "Kibito's probably right, Ju; in fact, I bet that Atarashii went off to take back Yohotoko."
"But why did she go alone?" asked Minami. "We could have helped; she can't do this on her own!"
A loud yawn made them all jump up with clenched fists but it was only a sleepy-eyed Rou. "You are idiots! And here I thought that my grandchildren were the dumb ones, yeesh!"
"What do you mean by that!?"
Rou looked up at the giant man with a scowl that could curdle fresh milk. "She knew what she was doing! Do not ever underestimate her; she didn't want you to get hurt because of what she believes is her wrongdoing, so she left in the middle of the night while we were sleeping." He made a watch appear and looked at it carefully. "If I know Atarashii, she's going to use speed...and if she does, she could be halfway across the universe by now."
"Halfway?!" Taihen groaned. "We'll never find her!"
"Well, I doubt she would actually be nuts enough to got halfway across the universe. She probably went to the Kaio planet."
"Why?"
"Hm." The ancient Kaioshin stroked his mustache thoughtfully. "Not entirely sure. But I have a feeling that it has to do with The Seven..."
Judaiko had listened quietly through this, absorbing all the information like a sponge. Now she spoke up: "We have to go help Atarashii."
"We can't leave here, Judaiko," Higashi said, looking entirely defeated. "Even though this is a huge crisis, we still have immense duties with our sectors of the universe to attend to."
Kita nodded gravely. "Yes...the Guardians will have to do this themselves with only occasional help from us."
Judaiko looked to Taihen and Shinobi, looking for any replies. With Atarashii up and gone, she would have to be leader for a while. "Girls?"
A moment of uneasy silence. Then...
"Well, I suppose we can't let the squirt go out on her own, now can we?" asked Taihen, putting on her toughest face. "It'll ruin my reputation ya know?"
"Yeah!" Shinobi cried, yanking her sea amulet from her pocket. "Let's go get her!"
"So you're going then," Rou said. "You must be careful, Guardians; Mei must not be underestimated in any way. Doing so could get you killed quick! But most of all, you must bring back Atarashii. If she dies...the people we protect may lose confidence in us."
*****
For the first time in half a decade, Atarashii walked in plain sight without being harassed by the Kaio public. It was very relieving...yet she found herself constantly looking over her shoulder for any attackers. No doubt that the girl who had held Yohotoko had been a goon for Mei; and the horrible feeling that someone could get so close to her, her child, and her loved ones left her more than a little paranoid.
Her eyes scanned the crowd expertly, searching for the face she had burned into her brain before leaving. Light blue skin...navy blue hair...tall...and, if ya didn't know he was evil, kinda cute. But she saw no men that matched the description, not even a little bit.
A dash of short, dark blue hair! Atarashii saw it bobbing through the crowd of heads and immediately started after it. More than a few people protested at being shoved aside by this woman and threw rather colorful curses at her. But all that Atarashii could see, all that she really cared for, was that furry blue head in front of her. Whoever she was tracking seemed to have picked up on her and was moving even faster through the crowd. Atarashii's answer was to go just as fast. In a few moments, she had almost caught up to the person when they made a hard right into an old alley filled with trash.
"Oh, no you don't!" Atarashii snarled and pursued. But every time she was close enough to even try to get them, they would escape down another turn or overturn some garbage can to slow her down. Atarashii suddenly found herself wishing she had paid more attention to her gym classes.
When she came around another corner, her quarry had up and disappeared. She cursed under her breath before noticing that she had come upon what looked like a hotel. It was three stories high in the normal Kai fashion that oddly resembled the Japanese culture. The roof was painted in a bold blue while the rest of the house was a mix of white and light blue. Hanging off one of the two balconies was a sign with a phoenix rising from the ashes. Under the phoenix were the words "Rising Hopes Inn". But what really caught her eye was the dozen or so cats lying on the porch.
They all stared at her as she climbed the porch stairs to the door with bright eyes. Atarashii tried to ignore it and rang the doorbell. "Hello? Anyone here? Can you help me, I'm looking for—"
Before she had even finished her sentence, the door was flung open and a tall man with dark blue hair in a matching Kaio coat with white trimming and underclothes had popped into view. He gave her such a big smile that his cheeks forced his eyes closed. "Welcome to the Rising Hopes Inn! It's 100 Zeni a night, 110 with the chocolate on the pillow and—" He stopped smiling when he finally opened his eyes and had looked at her head on. "MOTHERRR!! IT'S THAT PSYCHO WOMAN WHO WAS CHASING ME!!"
"What!?" someone roared from the shadows. Before Atarashii could even begin to make a move, an ancient-looking woman charged past her son and walloped her victim smack over the head with a rather hard broom. The stick broke in half as soon as it impacted but that didn't make the blow any less painful. Lights burst in front of Atarashii's eyes like lightbulbs of all different colors.
The woman was yelling something but the impending darkness coming over Atarashii blocked out everything. The last word she was able to utter consciously was:
"Mei...Mei...Kinjin..."
Ouchies....well, let's see how Atarashii handles this!
