Synopsis:
In this polished feature film debut of the highly popular t.v. series, Tenchi and the gang are transported back in time 26 years to the year 1970. While there, Tenchi tries to discover the connections to his mother Achika's disappearance, as well as his (soon to be) own. Which may have something to do with his worst enemy "KAIN", a powerful evil being who is planning to destroy Tenchi's family and the entire galaxy. Will Washu, Kiyone and the galaxy police hold the secrets necessary in order to stop KAIN's evil plans; or will Tenchi have to find within himself the strength to destroy KAIN once and for all and protect his mother in the year 1970? It's all here folks, in the feature film debut of the popular anime series Tenchi Muyo, "Tenchi Muyo In Love".
Review:
Out of all the anime series I've seen, and the feature length movies based on them; "TMIL" is truly one of the better film versions I've seen in a long while. The film greatly combines all the elements from the t.v. show, adds in some new characters and we are left with something vaguely familiar, yet fresh and rather original. "Tenchi Muyo In Love" is a unique new look into the Tenchi Universe, and one entertaining film. The animation quality has maintained pretty much the same quality as the series, the colors are vibrant, bright and well balanced; the animation fluid and the effects sharp and dazzling. The art itself is rather gorgeous, a unique blend of colorful backrounds, fluid cel art and impressive effects. Definitely a nice change of pace from the original animation style. The characters are nearly exactly the same as they were in the series, each one maintains their familiar and often funny personalities. Characterizations are well-rounded, and often don't suffer from your typical flaws. Although the plot and characterizations in the movie tend to be overly cliche, it does not ruin the movie's sense of depth or any of it's entertainment value. Tenchi Muyo In Love is full of your basic anime characteristics, one who has watched many could easily see the next plot twist a mile away, although the story is sometimes uninteresting, it maintains a level of entertainment value which most anime fans can enjoy. It's story, which can appeal to a number of audiences is well directed and composed. Once you've started watching "TMIL; you can almost be certain that you'll want to finish it (Even Though You Don't Think Too Highly Of The Film). This movie appeals to just about any kind of anime fan (Then again, so did the series as well). The soundtrack is also very well done. A blend of nice songs and original backround music, composed by Christopher Franke. You might recall the name as being the same music composer for the sci-fi television hit "Babylon 5". There were some rather unique characterizations which I found to be especially interesting, more so than the others. Particularly with Achika's character, which was a bit more in-depth and developed than A lot of them in my opinion. Other characters in this movie are just plain fun to watch on-screen. Like in the t.v. show, Ryo-Ohki and Sasami are as cute and hilarious as ever. This aspect of the story dealing with character interactions is probably the most enjoyable part of the flick. "Tenchi Muyo In Love" is an impressive, well made film, full of all around anime fun. A highly enjoyable flick from beginning, all the way to the colossal ending for the series. And boy, is it an ending. |
