Synopsis:

This highly acclaimed epic anime OAV centers around a young knight destined to become the hero of a once forgotton land; one arisen from destruction and clash of the forces of good and evil. "Lodoss", a land in bitter turmoil, swept from the evil island "Marmo", a land controlled only by the forces of darkness; by those who will attempt to bring evil rule and destruction to all that is good and just.

Parn is an inexperienced fighter, whos father left him long ago when he was only a young boy, leaving just his sword and armor in his memory. As a Holy-Knight of "Valis", he betrayed the holy order of knights; which resulted in the banishment of him from the kingdom. Long after his father Tesius's death, Parn (now a young man) realizes his ambitions. He is to become a Holy-Knight of Valis, uphold his family's honor and 'defend the peace of Lodoss' from the evil forces of darkness. As a kinght in training, Parn has now agreed to battle alongside King Fahn, ruler of the kingdom of Valis. But Fahn's own ambitions would soon be realized, a war for the conquest of Lodoss, which could only end in a devastating battle between the forces of good and evil. Fahn's old friend Beld, ruler of "Marmo" now plans to conquer the kingdom of Valis, as well as Lodoss Itself. Parn is soon led by destiny alone to five other soon-to-be legendary warriors. These five are: Ghim a dwarf warrior, Deedlit, a beautiful but deceptively deadly elf. Slayn, a sorcerer. Etoh, a cleric. And Woodchuck, a good-natured thief. These six who barely know one another are now caught between a battle for conquest, in a mystical world of evil sorcery, ancient dragons and one powerful witch who controls them all behind the scenes like pawns in a chess game.

Review:

"Record Of Lodoss War" is truly one of the greatest anime series ever made. It greatly combines elements of fantasy, action and drama into one colossal epic storyline. Both dubbed and subbed versions are beautifully done, and no one piece of dialouge is left out of place. The characters Record Of Lodoss Warinteract with one another as they should, and no one is left out of the storyline for too long. Unlike most fantasy series, 'Lodoss War' does not often drift away from it's original story intent. Every character is portrayed very well, ranging anywhere from Deedlit the elf, to the soldiers on front lines durring the battle scenes. (And if you ask me, "Ashram" is one of the coolest anime villians ever) The character designs are truly marvelous and extremely original. Some of my more favorite are Deedlit the elf, and Woodchuck the thief. This is most likely one of the greatest fantasy anime series ever rendered. A wonderfully engaging story is brought to this greatly produced OAV, which is actually based on the popular RPG from Japan. Fantasic characters, blistering action and one of the most wonderfully told stories in anime; is all part of this spellbinding epic fantasy.

The animation is truly something to see, which contains some visually striking imagery; scenes that are just real "eye-candies". Some battle sequences are of an epic quality I've only seen in Kurosawa samurai films. Although the animation may not be as detailed as say, that of a "Studio Ghibli" production and is not always up to par with the way of things; very often sequences are very well concieved. It Gives this series a unique sense of visual style, unlike any other I've seen in most animes. The only technical flaw that I will mention is the use of various stock-footage, which for the most part is re-incorporated into several of the battle sequences. Other than that, technical aspects are pretty decent most of the time. But what really makes this series worthwhile is it's marvelous attention to character depth, which keeps the plot even more engaging throughout. It truly adds a sense of depth to this fantasy world, one that we only learn more and more about, as we continue to watch the Lodoss War series. Aside from all it's minor technical flaws, it is the wonderfully profound storyline which makes this series truly shine; one that becomes even greater towards the very end. I feel "Record Of Lodoss War" is a very well-made epic fantasy drama. Complete with fantastic characters, good animation, and a well-crafted compelling storyline. This is definatly a must see for any fantasy film or anime fan.
