Review:
One could assume several factors after viewing such films like this one. Project A-ko?, some kind of screwball sci-fi B flick? A hilarious comedy full of action scenes galore!? Or some would categorize this thing as just plain ridiculous, and for the most part that's very true. Call it science fiction, call it comedy, call it utterly insane. I believe Project A-ko to be a little bit of both. As far as sheer technical aspects go, this film is at best above average or below. The film contains some pretty decent animation. Which was pretty good for when it was made, in the late 80s or so. But it is what Project A-ko lacks, which all fans mainly love anime for. Not it's unique visual style or art, it's funny or appealing characters, but the anime's story and plot. Which I'm afraid this film has little or none of. Although I feel this film is of a quality which should not contain a decent plot of some sort, that it doesn't. But Project A-ko has one thing which other animes fail to do. The film's great sense of comedic genius, in an anime sense that is. There is a considerable amount of people who find this film to be totally nonwitstanding, absurd and just downright ridiculous. I totally agree with them in that respect. Although there's really no actual decent storyline present, and no one really can tell where they're going with this thing; it is actually incredibly enjoyable to One of the most hilarious aspects of this film which I felt was anime 'weirdness' in all it's ridiculous forms was the captain of the large enemy ship, who was actually an alcoholic. I enjoyed watching the captain gradually loose control of the command of the ship; and go crazy right on screen; which reminded me of the classic battleship, and captain Harlock flicks in the 70's. Seeing A-ko and B-ko battle starships and evil foes, while watching C-ko nearly cry herself to death did more than just put a small smile on my face. I found this film to be extremely hilarious. But when the film drew to a close, I was more than a little puzzled about what I had just seen. In the end, a pretty decent and hilarious anime flick well-worth a look, though I wouldn't recommend this to newcomers of anime. |
