Ninja Resurrection

    Summary:

Graphic, declamatory ninja saga follows a reluctant and pietistic nation's engagement into civil war. Despite the often decorous action, it's uneven animation; oratorically rebarbative characters/dialouge will turn off most viewers.

16th century feudal Japan is a dark and desolate period of epic war. In a land where revolution and rise of religions provoke violent movements among the peoples. Enraged and fueled by hate and the inspiration of their self-made leaders, the samurai armies and nations thrive on war and elimination of the opposing enemies. Yet there are still those leaders who wish to establish balance among the nations. The opposing forces of a powerful religious nation seek to destroy it and reclaim the land which is theirs. The leader of this nation is a young man who's standpoint is foretold by an ancient prophesy, one which contains it's share of dark and evil circumstances; nonetheless the young man rises to his position as the savior of the nations. The young leader's nation of people however consists of the stong, young, weak and the peasant armies; such a potentially weak force contains the chance of failure in this dark struggle of violent expiation and revolution.

Review:

Ninja Resurrection has been made out to be the definitive mirror successor of films like "Ninja Scroll", a take off of the many popular samurai flicks which have recently been released; and perhaps made out to be the deserving flicks that they're not. Like the film "Ninja Scroll" "Ninja Resurrection: The Revenge Of Jubei" takes into account the many known characteristics which that film had. Like Ninja Scroll, Ninja Resurrection contains a character who's name is shared by the same main character in Ninja Scroll; Jubei. Like that character, he contains all the characteristics of a good ninja character in anime. But it should be taken to notice, that "Ninja Resurrection" is indeed NOT a sequel in any sense to Ninja Scroll neither a prequel or continuation of the original story. Making the series just a mere technical and production 'copycat' in a distinct sense. Ninja Resurrection is again, merely another violent ninja anime. Like many titles which are out there, it is set as a one in rank with others like it. Labeled with all the stereotype, cliches and character styles seen in many ninja style animes.

This was sonething to keep in mind while watching Ninja Resurrection, as it may come as a surprise the true nature of the series. I wasn't expecting much if anything from a title like this one, but I must say it was also a title I didn't see coming. Ninja Resurrection is yet another ultra-violent samurai flick. Though it contains a considerably decent storyline as well as animation, there is only one minor problem. The series is much too convoluted, out of proportion and yes VIOLENT for it's own good. Ninja Resurrection is not by any means, a 'Hack-n-Slash' ninja flick like "Ninja Scroll" (Though it is) but is near entirely and most noticeably; a mess. The plot contains several overtones (And I'm not talking about the kind found in titles like Evangelion), ones that are potentially offensive in their own right. Not to mention the incredible amount of gratuitous violence found in it.

Near all potentially good aspects are shattered by a huge dosage of taboo content, the show ends up being just disturbing; and it doesn't do justice to it's premise either. Ninja Resurrection is a show meant for adults, and in high regard to the idea is the mere appeal of this show, which is highly limited to those strong-stomached enough and who are not bothered by the cliche nature of the worn ninja-action premise. The characters themselves contain apsolutely no redeeming qualities, their traits are distorted all throughout the plot, in all the array of good and bad aspects; the violence and the controversial commentary. The audience for Ninja Resurrection is highly limited, and it's a story which is perhaps not good enough to hold foundation to that end. Knowing that I see no reason not to view a title as such as a waste of time, declamatory and one which can't be taken seriously.
