Review:

The ever growing universe of "Mobile Suit Gundam" (Arguably the most successful anime franchise ever created), has soared to even new heights with this latest installment "Gundam Wing". Though near a 'spin-off' of most mecha animes, as well as the originals which established the series as a huge success in Japan; "Gundam Wing" still holds good foundation as an original storyline in it's own right. Gundam Wing is a series like most, containing appealing characters, animation, plot and mechs galore; though there is indeed a slight problem in the mix. First off, Gundam Wing is a story which has been done before, and the premise hasn't really improved much since the release of it's much more renowned predecessors. The plot of the series is one which is drawn-out, and is in no hurry to pick things up. Though the actual plot is a relatively simple one, it's amazing to think that the show tends to drag it's dialouge over a half-100 episode television series. It is a plot which doesn't belong in a series this size, or at least done the way it is. The result is often something boring, and something potentially much greater.

Gundam Wing is a story which could use a decent amount of good direction, at least for the incredibly, often laughable dialouge which goes along with it. The characters don't seem to have any sort of perpose for the most part of the series. The animators tend to spend most of their time setting a sort of basis for the characters and the plot. The story drags over a considerably large 20-30 or so episodes, but picks up a bit toward the end. The characters in Gundam Wing themselves seem rather cliche and out of place. In fact, you don't really know who's side any one is on, though this could have made the series more interesting. Instead the show seems a bit of a waste, the story itself appeals mainly to fans of "Robotech" style epics; the problem however with gundam wing is that it utilizes these techniques with often uninteresting characters. By the time they appear to get interesting enough, Gundam Wing already looses nearly all it's energy. The animation is pretty sub-standard, though it is often impressive enough for a television series, the show really could be better.

In the end, I mainly felt Gundam Wing to be several pieces of a great series constructed all in the wrong way. The series is indeed not a terrible one by a long shot, and is pretty enjoyable once you've grown accustomed to your typical 'mech' flick. Despite it's good aspects, Gundam Wing does contain it's share of flaws; ones which appear much too often in the series. Gundam Wing can be an enjoyable anime, to one who has the patience to sit through it's rough moments. But containing these aspects, it's quite difficult to see the good in a series like this one. Gundam Wing may be good enough for "CN's" standards, but unfortunatly; not nearly enough to be considered great in my book.
