Prologue - She Sat

She had seen them again. They seemed to always be together. It had been almost 2 years since she had actually spoken to them at the same time; and months since they had spoken at all. There they had been, walking down the street, arm in arm, totally oblivious to the rest of the world; to them, there was nothing but the depth of each other’s eyes. They hadn’t seen her, or the car headed right for them. If it weren’t for her quick reflexes, and the luck that she had had her Fujin on her, they would have been in the hospital, or worse, now. As she fled the scene, she could swear she heard Recca calling to her; that only made her run faster; she couldn’t face them now, not without confessing her secrets. And, she wasn’t ready for anyone to know, yet.

Sighing tiredly, she flopped into her favorite chair, the worn-out brown one, and stared at the empty fireplace. She hadn’t dared light a fire in it, not since the last time they had been together. It sat, empty and cold, waiting for the time when she had the courage to confess to them her true feelings so it could be used again; waiting for her to confess her love for…

It didn’t matter anymore. She saw that they were meant for each other, and there was nothing she could do about it. Even if she had a chance, she wouldn’t trade someone else’s happiness for her own. They had both become dear to her over the years, like the family she had never had. She couldn’t stand to see one of them suffer. So, she suffered instead. It was better that way, in her mind; they were better. The Flame Master and the Healer, Princess and Ninja. Who was she to compare? Just a simple Japanese punk girl, who happens to be in love. Ha! Love is a crock. It’s not for people like me; it’s for people like them, people who have a purpose and destiny.

She closed her eyes, squeezing the lids tight, until only a single salty tear leaked out, instead of the waterfall she knew was brewing. “Why?” she whispered, trying to keep the emotions at bay. “Why them? Why…her?” Then the dam broke, and she found herself sobbing uncontrollably. She pulled her legs to her chest and hugged her knees, crying out all her pain. Through her blurry gaze, she saw the elemental weapon on her arm; it shone in the light of the naked bulb above her, taunting her.

“Why?” she whispered again, voice full of anguish. “WHY!?” She ripped the Fujin from her arm, and flung it across the room; it landed in the fireplace with a ‘thud’, and stood there, still glaring at her. “Why couldn’t I have real power… why… why couldn’t I be wanted, loved, like that?” she sobbed, burying her face in her arms. “Why couldn’t she want me? Why… why couldn’t I be born like Recca. Why am I nothing?”

She looked up again, at her elemental, and locked the door to her heart again. The tears stopped, and she uncurled herself from the chair. Walking over to the fireplace, and picked her Wind up; it locked onto her wrist with a satisfying ‘snap’, like a lock over her emotion. “They were made for each other,” she told herself, gripping the Fujin, till it cut into her arm and drew blood. “I will not interfere.” Crimson fluid snaked down her arm to her elbow, and dripped to the floor with a soft ‘plop plop plop’. “I will not interfere.” The emotion was gone; she was ready to face her day.
