Have you ever noticed how different onion rings, hot dogs, and cotton candy taste, when you're at a fair, or the circus, or an amusement park? They have a strange taste to them, not unpleasant, but somehow different than they taste when you eat them at home or a restaurant. It's almost like they take on the taste of the air. They taste like excited little kids who are begging their parents for a ride on the carousel. They taste like teenagers who are trying to pretend they're having a horrible time but can't quite manage to be convincing. They taste like the magician who does tricks and pulls a nickel out of the laughing child's ear. They taste like the excitement, the laughter, the happiness of being in a place where time and the world are gone, where you can have a good time, and ignore the fact that you need to do this or do that. Sometimes they even taste faintly like smoke. It's amazing how different things can taste at a carnival.
