Black Thread of Fate

The episode begins with Kirika lying on the bed and opening her eyes slowly to someone standing next to her.  Looking up, she sees Mireille pointing a gun at her head.  Seeing it did not surprise Kirika, but instead, she soothes Mireille by saying that it is okay, and for her to go ahead.

From the view of the ceiling fan, Kirika is injured somehow around her waist.  Holding the gun steadily still, Mireille's eyes fill with hesitation on killing Kirika.  Canta per me sings in the background and gradually approaches apex.

[Title Screen]

Droplets of blood trails the stone floor leading up to Kirika's identification card.  Fades away to an arid area where a man is tied to a post amongst ruinous buildings and men are questioning him.  The main inquisitor retells of what had happened to their revolutionist leader, Varjan.  That he was killed by the assassin the man had hired, and now the inquisitor wants to know who had done it.  When the old man tied to the post didn't answer the question, the inquisitor kills someone besides him, then another.

Slowly, the man looks up and said, "noir."  Noir, the highest title among the assassins and without peers.  God's servants who gave what Varjan deserved when he stained the ground with blood under the name of revolution.  The inquisitor raises his gun and kills the old man.

Out in the arid desert road, a jeep speeds by.  Inside, Kirika is holding onto her side and grimacing in pain as Mireille looks over her.  Their trip consists of walking on foot to the Aramera River where they'd rendezvous with a waiting helicopter.  Mireille lectures Kirika that to be a professional assassin, they not only have to eliminate the target, but to get away without any injuries.  As if to cause more headache for Mireille, the fuel indicator lights up.  Looking over to Kirika again who is grimacing in pain, Mireille suddenly says in a joking manner, that if she dies here, Mireille will be rid of some burden.  Kirika answers with, "is that right..." and remembers what had happened.

In the dead of the night, a man slept soundly in his bed and Kirika appeared in the doorway.  Without hesitation, she fired two shot at him and started walking away.  But all of the sudden, a shot is fired and Kirika gasps out in surprise.  Immediately, she turned back and fired additional shots at the target.  Soon after, Kirika stumbles in pain.

In the revolutionist base of operation, a chubby man with glasses says that he knows the name Noir.  The inquisitor from earlier is lying down on a chair of sort and also remembers them from the underground work in Pakistan.  The chubby man continues to say that noir's name is more frightening than the God of Death.  The inquisitor surprised at the choice of word, vowed that even if it costs his death, he'd bring hell to the "God of Death."

In a small town under the burning sun, the jeep is parked next to an old building and Kirika is being helped up the stairs by Mireille.  During the way up, Kirika tells Mireille that she had lost the Student ID when she got shot.  She carried it throughout everything and couldn't throw it away.  That even though it isn't the real her, it means something.  Mireille admonishes her not to talk anymore, and continues up the stairs.

A remembrance of Kirika brings her to the old high school she attended without knowing why.  Although all are fake, she had it in her hand, which meant something to her in the midst of nothingness.

Back in the old hotel room Mireille got, Kirika lies in bed with her side bandaged.  In the restroom, Mireille tries to get some water, but none came out.  One frustration after another, she looks up at the dirty mirror of her own reflection.  Thinking to herself that maybe it isn't too late, if she is by herself... going to the helicopter.

Outside, the zealous revolutionaries are searching for noir building by building and even put up road blocks demanding to see everything.

In the room, Kirika wakes up to see Mireille pointing the gun at her and saying it is alright to kill her and thank for being with her all along.  Kirika takes a deep breathe in preparation for the shot as the soft melody of the pocket watch plays.  Mireille then pulls the trigger and memories of when Mireille were a child comes flooding back.  Lowering her gun slowly, with Kirika's blood now overflowing the pillow, Mireille kneels beside the bed and starts to sob quietly onto the now dead body.

.

Just kidding.

.

Mireille slowly lowers her gun, and Kirika looks at the hole on the pillow beside her head.  With a much happier outlook, Mireille declares she doesn't care who Kirika is and that she has something to ask the Soldats.  That until she knows what she needs to know from them, Kirika will stay with her.  And only till then, will she kill Kirika.  With a soft smile, Kirika agrees.

Outside again, the revolutionaries bashes open a car window and rips off a yellow sheet.  On the chair, they find blood stains that Kirika had left behind.  Drips of blood could now be seen on the stairs all the way up leading to their room.

A phone rings in an airport somewhere as Mireille waits by the telephone for someone to pick up.  When no one did, Mireille looked sullen when she hung up the phone but perks up with a fake laughter when she sees the shopkeeper holding her bag of grocery and looking at her.  Walking back slowly down an alley and lost in thought, she suddenly hear something and darts into the shaded doorframe of the side building as truckload of people passes through.  Realizing where the trucks are headed, Mireille drops her bag of grocery and runs back to the hotel room.

Running after the trucks, Mireille soon realizes that she isn't going fast enough to catch up and thinks of an alternative route.  Looking up, she races up to the roof of the building and begins to jump from one to another.

In the hotel's stairway up to the room, revolutionaries packed the stairs up to the room and all have their guns at ready.  Rushing in, they find Kirika alone in the bed and surprised that noir is a girl and a kid.

At the underground tunnel of where Varjan's base is, the chubby man walks past Kirika's student ID and then backs up to pick it up.

Outside the hotel, the men drags Kirika between them and throws her into the back of the truck as Mireille looks on helplessly on the rooftop.  The soft melody plays and Mireille stares into the pocket watch that Kirika had brought her.  The clock ticks away and she is lost in the memories of the past that haunts her.  The pocket watch that lies just outside the reach of the hand that lies in the pool blood plays the music inside her child's mind.  Her large eyes looked on as she hugged her teddy bear.  Two men and a lady's foot lied in pools of blood in her vision now.  Snapping out of it, Mireille decides on her actions.

Two revolutionaries chats idly on the street side as Mireille walks out of an alley behind them.  Raising her guns, she fires shots at them, but intentionally misses.  When they look up, she is already gone.  Upon contacting the headquarter, the inquisitor angrily slams down the phone then chuckled to himself.

In a chapel somewhere, a fire lights up and Altena speaks the chant of the maidens of Noir and its meaning.  Looking up from her devotion, Cloe stands behind her cloaked in green.

At the revolutionary base, Kirika is being held in a small prison cell where she is lying down on the floor while the inquisitor and his men are looking at her, wondering her identity.   Walking in, the chubby guy gasps in surprise at Kirika and takes out the student ID.  Throwing it besides her, he questions Kirika's identity.  When she reaches for her ID, the inquisitor steps on her hand and harshly asked more questions.  Before she could say anything, he starts to ramble on about her devilish ways of killing Varjan and begins to kick her viciously.

Outside, two guards patrol the compound slowly as a gun with a silencer slowly points out towards them.  A silenced shot fires and then another and both went down in heaps in the dark of the night.  Salva nos plays as Mireille sprints into action.

In the operation rooms full with the monitors and people, Mireille steps in and says hi to everyone as her expression turns deadly.  Inside the cell, Kirika lies in a heap while the men stand over her.  Wondering if she is dead, the chubby guy asks about her friend and the inquisitor tells about the shots fired at the two men outside the alley.  Making sure of the information, the chubby went to call base of operation and an empty room rings back over and over.

Pulling out his gun, chubby went to investigate by himself.  As he got down the corridor, he peeks carefully into a room and gasps in surprise.  While back in the cell, the men wonders if it is the government that are coming in by surprise.  Walking off to check if there are any movement of the government, Kirika softly whispers on the ground.  "Noir, that's me..."

In the operation room where Chubby is peeking in and finding roomful of dead, he slowly backs away and realizes that Mireille is standing behind him.  He turns as fast as he could and raises his gun only to be gunned down immediately.  Standing over the Chubby as he gasps his last breathe, Mireille tells him that Noir is the name of an assassin team consisting of two people.  Without hesitation, she fires a point-blank shot at him.

Back in the cell, Kirika continues her soft whispers, "Noir... the derivation of word is... fate, ... follow, ... death.  Kneeling over Kirika, the inquisitor tries to hear her words.  Kirika then says again with more resolution, "noir, fate that will follow death... Two women who are the harbingers of death..."  Kirika's hand stretches out with two fingers and then goes on to say "The hand of darkness is... the green field, please protect the peace."  After her words, Kirika kneels with her head down while the inquisitor kneels over her and in one fluid motion, Kirika leaps up with her student ID in hand and slices across the throat of the inquisitor.

The two other men recoils in surprise and cocks their gun in preparation.  Mireille shows up just in time to kill the two off.  Looking to see the inquisitor's earring falls off and Kirika in the corner, holding onto her side and her student ID.  Saying to herself more than anyone else, Kirika says that she knew it all from the beginning that it is all a lie.  Looking up at Mireille, she asks "Who am I..."

Outside in a field in the dark of the night, Mireille fires off a flare gun while Kirika sits beside her holding onto the wound.  Looking up at the bright flare, Mireille says, "The thread that links them, must be black in color.  A thread deeper and darker than darkness itself."  A Black Thread of Fate...  As the flare falls slowly, a plane approaches slowly in the darkness...
