Video Game:
Thousand Arms
Genre: RPG/Date Sim
Company: Atlus, Red Company, and Morning Star Studios
System: Playstation 1
Information: This is a great game if you liked Outlaw Star. Yeah, so Thousand Arms had a very cliché plot, but it was still a fun game. The Battle system could use some improving, though. Depending how you play the game, you can see things as funny or serious. Like Outlaw Star (unedited version. mind you), Thousand Arms will make lots of sexual jokes that can pass you by at times. The minor characters are always breaking out to the 3rd barrier when they talk to you at times, such as: "Man, Atlus's webpage hasn't updated in months!" There's also injokes to old works of Takehiko Ito, just see the poster in Meis' room or one of the enemies you get to fight around Mounthand. However, Thousand Arms also suffered from censoring like Outlaw Star. Those potions you see in the USA version actually had bizarre names that made no sense in the Japanese version. And many of the sexual jokes were edited out in the USA version, but they still kept the lighter sexual jokes in. If you have the Japanese version or know where to get it, please inform me of anything else that was edited out in the USA version. The Japanese manual also hints at a missing chapter, which even my close Lamune fan friends are not sure of. Also in my profiles I give away minor spoilers to the game, so be careful when reading. Try reading other TA pages, and come back to my page when you have gotten halfway in the game. My thoughts also give some story ideas and hints for those thinking of writing Thousand Arms fanfiction.

Story:
Tradguld, the land of locomotives and peaceful countryside...
Langoud, the seafaring beach-city...
Sharan, the floating center of commerce...
And Dianova, the dark empire bent on taking over the world... a world of swords and magic...
This is the story of Meis Triumph and his journey to save the people from the Dianovan Empire's reign of terror and oppression. Having been raised within a circle of Spirit Blacksmiths, Meis was enjoying his life in Kant, a nature-filled town in Tradguld...
However....
Dianva's conquest reached the town of Kant, and the people were forced to evacuate their once peaceful land.
Separated from his family, Meis reaches the town of Boyzby and meets Sodina. From here, the story unfolds...
Characters:
Meis Triumph:
Hometown: Kant, part of Tradguld County
Age: 16
Profile: Very True to Himself, for better or worse. Puts 100% effort to what he believes is right. And what's right is his passion for the opposite sex.
Note: The son and heir to the Triumphs, a noble family of Spirit Blacksmiths. Very passionate, especially towards women of his type, which pretty covers any girl who'll talk to him. Regarded by most people as an easy-going play boy, but he has a strong sense of responsibility.
My thoughts: Meis Triumph is one of my favorite characters due to his strong loyalty, sense of responsibility, and honesty. Depending how you play the game you can make Meis the nicest person around or the biggest pervert in the game. In the start of the game, Meis must leave Kant due to Dianova's conquest. Raised in a rich home, Meis does not understand the ways of the common folk or how to survive on his own. He doesn't even know how to be a Spirit Blacksmith. Once Meis ends up in Boyzby he meets up with Sodina and her brother Jybil, who happens to be a experienced Spirit Blacksmith. The Triumphs are part of the Light clan.
Status: Meis is the weakest main character I have ever come across, an actually fresh change for me. Despite being weaker than the others you come across, he makes up in high HP and being able to strike enemies faster. Later on in the game, Meis starts hitting harder and those Magic Beasts come in handy during boss fights.
Cliff Triumph
Age: Probably around 30 or early 40's
Hometown: Kant
My thoughts: A coward, a pervert, irresponsible, weak-minded, can all describe Cliff Triumph. He is sleazy as a Triumph can get. Meis soon realizes how his father is, and disrespects him for his traits. However, Cliff never listens to his son and would rather spend his life not protecting or governing Kant.
Meis's Mother
My thoughts: We don't see Meis' mother anywhere, only mentioned by Meis once in the game. It's also hard for Meis to answer questions by the girls on his mother. She may of died childbirth or left Meis's father due to his sleazy nature.
Peis Triumph
My thoughts: Peis is only mentioned by Master Kanouha and that they were rivals often when it came to girls. Peis is Meis' Grandfather. It is not known if Peis is still alive or not.
Mil
Age: 14 or 15
Hometown: Kant
My thoughts: You don't get to talk to Mil much in the start of the game. Much later on you can talk to her. She's very strange, though. She always wants to study Meis' behavior and writes about it in her notebooks.
Sodina Dawnfried:
Hometown: Boyzby, Tradguld's Capital
Age: 15
Profile: A down-to-earth girl, who believes in Meis, no matter what.
Note: Honest cheerful, and kind towards everybody. But whenever Meis shows interest in other girls, she gets a bit jealous and acts accordingly. Most likely with a slap to Meis' head.
My thoughts: Sodina is a very nice girl, who will hit Meis if he ever says something he's not supposed to say. She loves her older brother, Jybil, so much it sounds a little sick at times. However, you wonder how they can be brother and sister, when Jybil's age comes into questioning later in the game. She also likes Schmidt which makes Meis alittle jealous at points. She's also prone to kidnappings.
Status: Sodina falls into the healer category. She can do some damage, but it's better to put her in the back away where she can be easily crippled.
Jybil Dawnfried
Hometown: Jybil has moved to Boyzby, it's hinted that he may have come from Myscatonia.
Age: Appears to be in late 20's or early 30's.
My thoughts: Sodina's older brother and the resident Spirit Blacksmith of Boyzby. It appears that Jybil is in hiding and hiding something from Dianova's empire. Jybil becomes Meis's teacher despite Meis being a poor student, later on Meis highly respects Jybil and his teaching. Jybil is also concerned over what path his old student Schmidt might take in life. It also seems that Jybil and Metalia were in love at one time or another. Jybil is part of the Light clan.
Muza Grifford
Hometown: Schutzen, home of the fearless warriors
Age: 21
Profile: His actions are motivated by his dream of becoming a hero. A big brother figure to Meis, but gets very nervous in front of girls...
My thoughts: You meet Muza when you go to Fort Teve. Both Meis and Muza are childhood friends and often like to tease each other. It's hinted that Muza and Wyna go together, but can Muza get over his shyness of girls?
Status: Always keep Muza in your party. He may be slow, but he hits hard. Replace him Meis in the front line if you get sick of being kicked around by enemy monsters.
Schmidt
Age: 15 or 16
Hometown: His real Hometown is unknown, but he was adopted by Jybil and lived in Boyzby
Profile: Schmidt is a former apprentice to Jybil. He abandoned the ways of the Light to pursue his dreams of attaining Dark power.
My thoughts: You meet Schmidt when you leave Fort Teve and come back to Boyzby. Since he loves Sodina, once he sees Meis with Sodina he decides to hate Meis’ guts. He tries to make Meis’ life a living hell in Boyzby. While Schimdt comes back to tell about his journey to Jybil. He also tries to tell Jybil to kick Meis out for being a poor student. But it turns out that Jybil is very nervous about Schimdt. Schimdt wants to become powerful so the ones he loves don't get hurt ever again.
Schmidt's father and mother
My thoughts: Schmidt's father is of the Dark clan and his mother from the Light clan. It is not know if Jybil was behind the death of Schmidt's father. Or what happened to his mother.
Jela
Age: 16 or 17
Hometown: Unknown
Profile: Jela is a sorceress who provides the Dark Master with magical back-up. Can her feelings for the Dark Master interfere with their deleagted agenda?
My thoughts: Let me say this, every problem Jela has helps you in the long run. The same can be said about when the Mecha 5 bicker constantly. Jela's feelings for Dark Master are so great that she will do things just to help your party even if she works for the Emperor.
Wyna Grapple
Hometown: Langoud
Age: 17
Profile: A very straightforward and carefree girl who prefers to live her own way. Talks like a guy, and her combat skills are first class. To this girl, the fight is everything.
My thoughts: Wyna is very tomboyish as sees Meis as more of a friend. She doesn't notice that Muza likes her at all. She will defend her new friends if her life depended on it. She tends to anger easily.
Status: Wyna is the second to the strongest character within your party. You can easily replace Sodina with Wyna to make a war party with Muza, Meis or Soushi, and Wyna.
Grapple
Age: Probably in his 40's
Hometown: Langoud
My thoughts: Grapple is the father of Wyna and the King of the pirates of Langoud. He has a potbelly and wishes that someday Wyna will settle down with a husband.
Palma
Age: 16 or 17
Hometown: Langoud
My thoughts: Palma is one of the priestess of Landgoud. As a priestess she has taken a vow of nonviolence. She is obsessed about being clean, if the area she is in clean, and if you are clean at all times.
Smoochy
Age: Unknown, maybe 70's.
Hometown: Now lives in Boyzby.
My thoughts: Er...Smoochy is a old man who can exchange the kisses you get on dates for prizes. You have to free him from a tresure chest in the Volcano Island to make him show up in Boyzby, though. You can get disks from him, which are helpful if you missed a spell.
Marion
Age: 14 or 15
Hometown: Mounthand
My thoughts: Um...Marion is just bizarre and doesn't know how to dress herself properly. She has a thing for machines and frogs. You go to her because you need to fix something. I don't know why certain people like her.
Bandigar
Hometown: ? (So far my only guess is Boyzby)
Age: ? (probably around the range of 18 to 20)
Profile:
"Bandiger is a hypocrite and a bandit. He is driven by greed, but pretends to be looking for love." -Acclaim Strategy Guide
My thoughts: Bandigar first shows up when you go to Mounthand, but I think he was probably following Meis and Sodina when they left Boyzby behind. He often scavenges around and lies often about himself or how he is doing. It's very obvious that Bandigar is in exile or that his family dead (which may of been rich) and must steal to live. I never thought Bandigar was evil or good, he just was someone who was never good at what he did as he was always begging for things from you instead of outright thievery. Had he not been in the position he is now, he might have actually become a great loyal ally to Meis. Oh and those who have seen Outlaw Star, the keyword is: A Fred Lau like Character.
Status: Bandigar probably has close stats to Meis Triumph: High HP, Speedy, but doesn't do alot of damage. He can be pretty tough the third time you meet up with him, but you can chose not to fight him for the second time.
Soushi Mahorba
Hometown: Wano, land of the Orient.
Age: 18
Profile: People may mistake him for a beautiful women, but in battle he is a cold machine programmed to defeat anyone unfortunate to cross his path. Very gentle to women and uses his looks and frailty to influence their maternal instincts.
My thoughts: Soushi pisses off Meis when he shows interest in Sodina at times. He often coughs to make himself look sick which makes the girls fawn over him. He thinks that Nelsha is too childish for him. When you first meet him something seems wrong with him. Also Soushi looks like a male Suzuka. Ah well, Thousand Arms was made after Outlaw Star by Ito, so it makes sense.
Status: Soushi is faster than Meis, but has low HP compared to the other strong party members. He does more damage than Meis does, though. And his special attacks are good in battle.
Kyoka Mahorba
Age: Maybe 14 or 15.
Hometown: Wano, land of the Orient.
My thoughts: Kyoka is the young sister to Soushi. She's worried about her brother when you first meet her.
Master Kanouha
Age: Looks like he's in his 50's or 60's
Hometown: Near the land of Wano, on a nearby Island.
My thoughts: Kanouha is as bad as Cliff Triumph, but he's not a coward for one thing. He's also Soushi's teacher. I wonder what Kanouha taught Soushi....
Kyleen Nelphe
Hometown: Sharan
Age: 16
Profile: Cheerful, active, full of curiosity. When caught between a rock and a hard place, she tends to either just run away or try to squeeze her way out of it by arguing. But somehow, people around her aren't too concerned with her personality.
My thoughts: I don't like Kyleen very much for certain reasons. You have to convince her to join your party, which is very hard to do. She loves money and often lies about herself just as much as Bandigar does. She is hard to please and she is always changing her mind on things just to argue with you. However, Kyleen is pissy for a reason, her family once ruled Sharan and Lavantis just recently kicked her out. Her thinking and reasoning is messed up though, maybe because of all that money on her brain.
Status: I haven't played alot on Kyleen to figure out how she is in battle.
Lavantis
Age: Probably late 20's or 30's
Hometown: Sharan
My thoughts: Lavantis is the recent ruler of the town, Sharan. He tends to be very greedy and everything in Sharan is unfairly overpriced. He seems to be supported by Dianovan forces when you first come over to Sharan. He loves all his toys/weapons he has gotten from serving the Dianovan empire. When your party comes to town, it's your job to overthrown him for good.
Nelsha Stylus
Hometown: The ancient city of Myscatonia
Age: Appears to be 12.
Profile: The Dress Master with a dual personality. Usually an introverted girl, but acts completely different whenever she changes her costume. When she loses her temper, she really loses her temper.
My thoughts: Nelsha's nice and sweet, but talks always in third person. You first meet her in Burutto where she needs your help for getting back her backpack. After finding it she then joins your party. However she has a whole other side to her known as the Disco Queen. The Disco queen is brash and loud. She usually turns into this when someone makes her really mad, such as Meis on a few occasions. Nelsha is part of the Light clan.
Status: I haven't played Nelsha alot to figure out how she is in battle.
Metalia
Age: Appears to be in late 30's
Hometown: Myscatonia
My thoughts: Metalia is a wise old woman, who is the leader of Myscatonia. Metalia knows alot about the history of the world of Thousand Arms and is very helpful for your journey. However, The great Library and town of Myscatonia is locked to all outsiders. Metalia is afraid that Dianova forces will destroy the history and stories contained within the city thus losing their wisdom forever. She also knows alot about Jybil, the Dark and Light clans, which is why Meis comes to Myscatonia in the first place. Metalia is also of the Light clan.
Damashi
Hometown: Zozotto
My thoughts: AH! %$@#%&@*^$##!!! The Damashi are ghosts and they tend to be always making mischief. You sometimes find them in battle and they are always never easy no matter what level your on. Hopefully the sleep spell they use backfires on them and you can easily kill them off that way. For some reason the Damashi are acting weird in the town of Burutto and you must go to the Damashi town of Zozotto to figure out why.
Benly Family
Hometown: Probably somewhere from Tradguld.
My thoughts: There are three members of the Benly family who you will find in certain dungeons. They will heal you for free, so you can gain lots of levels without spending all your items. And for your information there are no Benly sisters in the game.
Bolt
Age: Unknown, but probably recent comapred to the other members of the Mecha 5.
Hometown: Unknown
My thoughts: The first member of the Mecha 5. Bolt is extremely stupid, one wonders how he got into the Mecha 5. I guess good help is hard to find these days. He probably didn't come from either the Dark or Light clan. He may of been just a very strong (Bearing: "Stupid!") human who thought that the Emperor would make him stronger. He hates it when you say complex words to him, though. It is unknown what his real name must have been or when he became part of the Mecha 5 and chose to give up his mortal body.
Wire
Age: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown
My thoughts: The second member of the Mecha 5. Wire is outright insane and would love to tear your party apart into little pieces. He also loves to wreak any machine or computer apart like a virus, and probably bickers with Bearing constantly. Bearing who adores machines and Wire who would rather see them destroyed. Wire may have been from the Light clan and was captured by the Dark clan during those old wars between the Dark and Light clans. He was probably subject to torture and may explain his insanity. It is unknown what his real name must have been or when he became part of the Mecha 5 and chose to give up his mortal body.
Ratchet
Age: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown, might be the Moon
My thoughts: The third member of the Mecha 5. Ratchet is actually nice and sweet, but still fights for the Emperor's cause. She may have been a Dress Master from the extinct Dark clan. She hates Nelsha with a passion, I wonder if they knew each other before seeing at how old Nelsha is hinted at in the game. It is unknown what her real name must have been or when she became part of the Mecha 5 and chose to give up her mortal body.
Bearing
Age: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown, might be the Moon.
My thoughts: The fourth member of the Mecha 5. Bearing, like Wire, seems to be insane. His passion for hatred is great and what he hates are humans. He believes that machines will rule over humans and probably would love it if everyone discarded their body to become a machine. Bearing may have been some sort of Warrior from the now extinct Dark clan. It is unknown what his real name must have been or when he became part of the Mecha 5 and chose to give up his mortal body. Bearing: "You stupid human!!"
Shaft
Age: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown
The fifth member of the Mecha 5. Shaft is very loyal to the Emperor and would die protecting the Emperor if he had to. It seems that Shaft dislikes Jybil for some reason or another. Shaft seems to carry traits from the Triumph family and is not very talkative. It is unknown what his real name must have been or when he became part of the Mecha 5 and chose to give up his mortal body.
The Emperor
Age: ?? (Probably really old)
Hometown: The Moon
My thoughts: The ruler of Dianova, the Mecha 5, and the Dark Acolytes. The Emperor caused the downfall of the Dark clan. Those who disagreed with his ways were crushed, Dark and Light clan alike. Those following him in the early days realized how insane he was and tried of endless wars decided to leave and join the Light clan. Those captured for doing so suffered greatly by the Emperor. For some reason or another, the Emperor was finally defeated and went into hiding. Over time he found another way to become immortal and was planning to take over again. Now he commands great forces and is beginning to start his conquest. However he is looking for something powerful that Jybil might know of which might help him win the war and not these little battles with the remaining Light clan.
Status: While both Wire and Bearing were tough to beat and the rest of the Mecha 5 easy or hard bosses. The Emperor is almost insane to beat on low levels. Even with levels 60 and up he's still tough.
Places:
Tradguld County:
A peaceful Country side. Within Tradguld are many small towns on farming or country life. Kant is one of the many small towns ruled by noble families. Boyzby is the capital of Tradguld where the ruling family of Tradguld lives. Fort Teve watches the borders of Traguld. Everthing is fine in Tradguld before the Dark Acolytes come.
Kant:
A small village ruled by the noble family of Spirit blacksmiths, the Triumphs. However, the townspeople dislike the Triumphs due to their irresponsibility and their habit of flirting with every girl they come across. Many people agree that the Triumphs are a bunch of pigs and cowards. Hopefully, someday the Triumphs can redeem themselves and actually take care of Kant.
Boyzby:
The capital of Tradguld, Boyzby is a huge city. Within Boyzby there is a landing for airships, many shops, a moat, clear streets, and a grand mansion of the ruling family of Tradguld. Also in Boyzby are the Dawnfrieds, who came to live here.
Fort Teve:
Fort Teve watches the borders making sure of what goes in and out. Soldiers keep a daily watch around the fort. However, they are not strong against the forces of the Dark Acolytes.
Mist Valley:
Another old mine shaft surrounded by fog and mist, one wonders what is in there.
Lucent Cave:
A cave covered in ice, Meis and Sodina must go there after leaving Boyzby. There is something ancient and powerful down there, as a Great Spirit resides in here.
Hatuba:
The sea-faring beach city. Hatuba is a nice town, boats are always coming in with shipping supplies. It's also nice to relax near the beach.
Landgoud:
Right next to Hatuba, is Landgoud or the town of the pirates. There's something odd about this town, but you just can't place it. You have to figure out how to get in, though without being kicked out by the guards.
Volcano Island:
A small Volcanic island out in the ocean. Great treasures await inside, but watch out for that lava.
Mountainhand:
A barren land surrounded by mountains. Train rails also cover the desert.
Mounthand:
Mounthand is a huge train that travels thru Mountainhand. Within Mounthand is a great town filled with dusty parlors and country-like folk. You must find Marion to help you on your journey and watch out for Bandigar who has been following you.
Sinaga Pt:
One of the stations Mounthand stops at.
Juke Pt:
One of the stations Mounthand stops at.
Tokio Pt:
One of the stations Mounthand stops at. Tokio is close to Wano.
Wano:
The land of the Orient. There are many towns within the land and there is a small island nearby of Wano. However something smells fishy or wrong within Wano.
Rockbit:
Mostly a place where miners live who work within the Rockbit mine. While the place is not that very interesting, there seems to be something down the mineshaft. Oh, and watch out for Bandigar again.
Sharan:
Sharan is a floating city above the clouds. But it's not so beautiful inside. Expect to be treated like trash when you come in and every thing to be overpriced. Greed is the name of the game in this city.
Burutto:
Burutto is a small old town which has a very gothic look and feel to it. There's even an old clocktower. But watch out when the clock strikes at 12.
Zozotto:
The village of the Damashi. A regular spook town with gambling casinos. There's also a haunted house nearby. Don't get confused walking in the dark forest, though.
Myscatonia:
The ancient library. Myscatonia was once a great place where the Light Clan resided. But after time, most of the Light Clan left to go to other places and live there. Maybe you might find something within those old history books.
Dianova:
Surrounded by whirlpools it's almost impossible to reach this place. And when you do get in, you might be instantly attacked and captured with no way out. The Dark Acolytes love to force dark experiments on those that do survive. However, you must eventually go here to face the Emperor’s forces.
Star Plateau:
This place is a gateway to the Moon, many mysterious forces live here. It's best you appease them before doing anything that you might regret later.
The Moon:
The Moon was once a great place where both the Light and Dark clans resided. Now it's just an barren alien landscape with many answers to your questions. It's here where your quests finally stops and your last battle begins.
Ships:
The Cloud Manta:
Owned by Jela and the Dark Master. You have to hijack this flying ship. You soon get to Sharan using the Cloud Manta. But you don't fly it to other places, besides using the Warp power you get is better than flying.
Death Crimson:
The Emperor is building this great ship for something....
Things:
The Triumph family sword:
This sword has been in the Triumph family for years, it is the only thing Meis has of home when he is forced to leave Kant. However, Meis doesn't take good care of it and the sword is in disrepair. He soons learns how to take care of it by Jybil and the sword becomes what it once was before the Triumphs fell out of favor.
Sword Spirit:
It is unknown as what the Sword Spirit is. The Dark Acolytes claim that Jybil has this item and want it from him. If he doesn't have it than someone who knows Jybil might have it. And they will kill anyone in their path for it.
Jybil's Hammer:
Meis soon learns how to use Jybil's Hammer when being taught how to blacksmith. Jybil's Hammer is a great tool/fetish of the Light Clan.
Sacred Altars:
There are at least five or six Sacred Altars that belong to the Light Clan, and only one remaining Sacred Altar of the Dark Clan. These are places of great power and worship. Make sure that when you do find one of them that no one is following you.
Aquoon:
A great dragon that commands the forces of water. You gain Aquoon after finding the Sacred Altar of the Lucent Cave. Only Meis can summon the spirits of the Light clan.
Fiednod:
A great spirit that commands the forces of the earth. You gain Fiednod from the Sacred Altar in Wano.
Raou:
A great wolf like creature that commands the forces of the wind. You almost gain Raou at the Volcano Island, but lose it to the Dark Master. You do get it back later in the game.
Flareniel:
A great spirit that commands the forces of fire. You gain Flareniel at the Sacred Altar of Rockbit.
Golda:
A great golden dragon that commands the forces of light. You gain Golda at Myscatonia.
Odnis Orgon:
A dark dragon that commands the forces of darkness. Jybil is known to have this Magic Beast, but if it is a creature of darkness... What does that make of Jybil? You gain Odnis Orgon after defeating the Spirit Guardian at the Star Plateau.
