And So It Goes

By Windy-chan

Archive: The 2x5 Archive, Kyoki, and if anyone else wants it, just ask!
Pairings: 5+2
Warnings: Um, shounen-ai, a bit of angst and a slight language warning... actually, this is a pretty tame one for me. ^^' Romance, sappiness, kinda OOC for both 'Fei and Duo... ^^' Oh well.

Notes: Ok, I've had this itch to write a Gundam Wing fic using the song "And So It Goes" since the first time I heard it, which was back in September, and I just *finally* managed to get enough of an idea to get it down on paper! ...Now I'm not sure if I like it or not. ^^' Bah... anyways, please tell me if you like it or not, 'cause I really want to know. If it sucks, tell me! It would also help if you told me *why* it sucks so I could avoid that in the future... oh, and in case you're wondering, no, I don't play the piano. I *sing*, but I don't play the piano. For one thing, I can't read bass clef... ^^'
Oh, and thanks to my friend Katie for saying that if I could ever figure a fic out that she'd love to read it. I heart you Katie-chan! ^-^

Disclaimer: "And So It Goes" belongs to Billy Joel, and Gundam Wing isn't mine either. Hell, I don't even own the computer I'm typing this on!

' ' - Thoughts

----------------------

Wufei cautiously checked the last room in the large mansion that belonged to Quatre. 'Empty. Should be safe enough...'

He knew that Trowa and Quatre were out having a romantic dinner together (again), and Heero was out somewhere (he never says *where* he goes, and hell if anyone's going to ask...), and it appeared that duo had disappeared as well. Wufei nodded slightly in satisfaction. 'Good. Now no one but the servants might hear my bungling.'

Ever since Wufei had arrived, he had been longing to play the beautiful, perfectly tuned grand piano in Quatre's music room... but he hadn't dared. He couldn't stand the thought of embarrassing himself in front of the other pilots. It had been so long since he had last played, and he was sure to be rusty... 'And the gods only know what they would say if they saw *me*, "Justice Boy" as Duo enjoys calling me, playing the piano.' Wufei stifled a sigh as he slipped into the music room, heading straight to the piano. Playing music always seemed to calm his spirit, and he was in desperate need of soothing, for his heart ached with the longings for one of his fellow pilots that he dared not ever let himself act on...

Gently he lifted the cover from the keys, resting it against the piano as he sat down on the bench. He lightly traced his fingers across the ivory keys, almost reverently, feeling a gentle peace settle over him. He rested his feet lightly on the petals, hands moving across the keys through memory, beginning to play one of his favorite songs. It was a song he found came far too close to his own life... far too close to the truth... taking a deep, calming breath, he began to sing in a soft, sweet tenor.

"In every heart there is a room, a sanctuary, safe and strong. To heal the wounds from lovers past until a new one comes along."

He closed his eyes, letting the music carry him. His fingers danced across the keys, unhindered by the loss of his eyesight as his voice flowed through the words, conveying all the emotions woven into the song; hope, sorrow, fear, regret... love.

"I spoke to you in cautious tones; you answered me with no pretense. And still I feel I said too much. My silence is my self-defense."

Words that carried truth... the truth of his own life... feelings... actions...

"And every time I've held a rose it seems I only felt the thorns. And so it goes, and so it goes, and so will you soon, I suppose." In his mind, Wufei could see flashes of memory flashing before him... his sweet face... those violet eyes... he could almost hear his teasing laugh... these things did not disturb the music, but instead seemed to meld with it, making this song a work from his own well-guarded heart.

"But if my silence made you leave, then that would be my worst mistake. So I will share this room with you, and you can have this heart to break."

His voice stilled for a moment as the music changed to piano only, never once opening his eyes as the outside world faded away, leaving only himself, the piano, and his music.

"And this is why my eyes are closed, it's just as well, for all I've seen. And so it goes, and so it goes, and you're the only one who knows. So I would choose to be with you. That's if the choice were mine to make. But you can make decisions too, and you can have this heart to break. And so it goes, and so it goes, and you're the only one... who knows..." Slowly his fingers still, the music ending.

"Duo..." Wufei sighed softly.

"That was... that was beautiful, 'Fei." Wufei's eyes snapped open when he heard that voice, and his back went rigid. He turned slowly to look at the doorway, hoping against hope he was just imagining that...

Duo stood leaning against the door frame, an expression of surprised wonderment on his face. "I never thought *you* could... why didn't you do this before?"

"I..." Wufei frantically tried to slam his defenses back up around his wounded heart, shocked to find himself caught so vulnerable and unsure how to handle it. "I didn't..." He looked down at the piano, struggling to keep his hands from trembling. "I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of you when I made a mistake..."

"I didn't hear any mistakes," Duo replied, puzzled by Wufei's nervousness. "You alright, 'Fei?"

"I'm fine," Wufei said sharply, not looking towards Duo. 'I can't face him like this, I'm sure to let it slip, and I might ruin our friendship, or—' Wufei jumped slightly as Duo sat next to him on the bench, too close for comfort.

"Are you sure?" Duo asked, genuinely concerned. Wufei turned to look at Duo. 'Shit, wrong move—' He found himself caught in that amethyst gaze, unable to look away... or hide the vulnerability he was feeling. 'So I would choose to be with you... that's if the choice were mine to make...'

Duo stared into Wufei's eyes, shocked to see an expression of vulnerability there... of fear in their ebony depths. "'Fei?"

'But you can make decisions too...' Wufei swallowed when he found that his throat had gone dry as the song lyrics echoed in his head, urging him to take a chance, gather his courage, and tell Duo... "And you can have this heart to break..." he whispered softly. He saw Duo's eyes widen with surprise for a moment before moving forward and kissing those soft, sweet lips.

Duo froze as Wufei's lips pressed against his own. He stilled for a moment, stunned, then whimpered softly as he returned the kiss, wrapping his arms tightly around Wufei's neck.

'And so it goes, and so it goes, and you're the only one who knows...'
