The door to the old cabin swung open, creaking in a way that spoke of it's disuse over the past ten years. In stumbled two figures, each supporting the other, trying to the ignore the wounds and cold that plagued them. They dropped the bags they'd been carrying by the door and quickly began pulling off rain-soaked clothes, reguardless of aching cuts and modesty. It was another few moments before they were dry, dressed in mismatching old clothes, all they had left.
"I'm still freezing," Duo shivered, even though he'd added two layers to his outfit and now rubbing his nearly-numb arms, trying to keep his blood flowing. He hated autumn showers, hated them with a vengence.
"Me, too," Wufei replied, teeth chattering slightly, " Let's try to get a fire started, okay?" He didn't even have the energy to berate Maxwell for whining. Not that he wanted to torment the braided boy, but under other cirumstances his lack of comment might be noticed.
After several minutes of cursing (in a variety of languages) the logs, paper, and old fabric refused to the light. Wufei resisted the urge to kick the stubborn fireplace and flopped onto the floor in the one room cabin with a huff. He glared at his companion, who was carefully wrapping his wounds.
"It's not going to work," Wufei growled. He watched silently as Duo finished bandaging one leg and began working on the other. His dark eyes widened. He hadn't realized the extent of the other boy's injuries.
" I guess we'll just have to rely on blanket," Duo smiled slightly, though it was more of wince, as he worked on the gash that ran the length of his calf.
"Here let me do that," Wufei took the disinfectant, needle and thread without a second thought. With the quick efficency he'd been taught as a boy, Wufei sewed up the wound. His first training had been in first aide, before he'd become a warrior. Duo's face paled slightly at the pain, but he managed to look grateful when the other boy finished the task.
"Thanks, buddy. Wasn't sure I'd be able to do that myself."
He was greeted with silence and Duo sighed. He somehow always managed to get paired up with these silent types. Quatre would be much better company. *But Quatre didn't just bind up your leg.....And Wufei was really gentle too....He knew what he was doing.*
"Where'd you learn to be so good at first aide man? Practically fixed me up as good as Sally Po," Duo grinned again, trying to get a reaction out of the Chinese boy. *God, if he isn't just as bad as Heero. But at least Heero managed to become a friend. this guy...oi*
"Thank you," two words. He nodded to Duo. Then got up, opening the cabinet over the fireplace, searching for blankets. It had suddenly gotten warmer in the room, though he couldn't exactly tell why....After a moment he groaned and the spell was broken. Duo looked up, wondering if the pilot of Shenlong was in pain.
"Wufei?"
"There's one blanket....Just one,"the other boy growled. He wondered if he should suggest sharing it, though he didn't want to let his guard down. Wufei knew he would be absolutely mortified if he woke up to find himself *cuddling* with Duo or something like that and it was bound to happen, considering how cold it was or how the braided pilot happened to be very attractive. So, he stood there, bound between two decisions.
"Uhh...We could flip for it, if you're really opposed to sharing," Duo rubbed a hang over the back of his neck nervously, hoping he wasn't blushing. The other pilot shrugged, much to his relief.
"We can share. It's pretty big..."Wufei stretched out on the floor next to Duo, his overworked muscles protesting. There wasn't much he could do for his own injuries, most of them invloved bruises and knotted muscles. He was about to spread out the motheaten wool blanket when one slender hand stopped him.
"Where does it hurt?" asked the Deathscythe pilot quietly.
"Shoulders, neck, chest....Why?"Wufei answered without thinking, it didn't occur to him to lie to the other boy and say he was fine.
"Come on, dude, you just laid down like you were stiffer than a popsicle stick! I can help...just roll over, kay?" Duo grinned again, rolling his eyes at the suspicious look Wufei gave him.
Strong, but deceptively thin, hands began massaging Wufei's neck the instant he rolled over. He groaned a little, feeling Duo slowly loosen the cramped muscles. Occasionally the braided boy would encounter a bruise and he'd feel a twinge of pain, but for the most part it just felt good. When he moved down Wufei's back to his shoulders, the boy didn't protest, even after Duo removed his shirt. By the end of the hour Wufei was feeling a lot better, better than he had in awhile, in fact.
"Thank you, Duo," he whispered to the american and crawled under the blanket. Duo followed, sighing as he felt a lot warmer, the effects of the storm wearing off. Still, he knew it would be even warmer close to another human being and he glanced at Wufei. The other boy was fast asleep, the lines of pain he'd had before on his face gone. In fact, without his usual scowl, Wufei looked...peaceful, not to mention very handsome. Deciding he'd take advantage of that peace for one night, Duo snuggled as close he could tothe Chinese boy without waking him, finally resting his head on Wufei's shoulder.
*Feels good...* his mind whisper before he drifted off, wondering at the strange new sensation he had begun to feel.
***
Wufei awoke to a roar of thunder overhead filling his ears, the sound penetrating the haze of sleep that filled his finds. He shifted slighlty, feeling something soft and warm gathered in his arms. Nestled against his chest was another person obviously, his sleeping mind not registering the implications of that fact until several moments later and his eyes shot open. *Duo....* Wufei stared down at the other boy, who murmured in his asleep, as if he knew someone thought about him. His nose was buried in Wufei's collar bone, one cheek rested against the Chinese boys shoulder. His expression was quiet, innocent, so very unlike the person he potrayed while wakeful. Wufei almost didn't want to disturb him. Almost.
"Maxwell!" he barked, trying to convince his body to pull away and untangle his arms from where they'd encircled the slender pilot's waist. His body didn't exactly want to obey.
*Let's stay close...it was warm..* one part of his mind argued.
*But I'm not supposed to be that close to him!* argued another.
*Admit you like him a little at the very least. Admit you enjoyed cuddling. Chang Wufei likes to cuddle...* that voice taunted him mercilously in his mind, a voice that sounding surpisingly like Meiran's.
*I do not!*
Meanwhile Duo was stirring and suddenly realizing he was being held close by the Shenlong pilot who was also yelling at him. Duo's fuzzy mind couldn't exactly make out what he was saying, but did remember moving closer to the other boy while he was sleeping. He'd never thought Wufei would respond.
"What?" his foggy mind managed to say.
"What are you doing? What am I doing? What happened?" Wufei was looking panicky, he wasn't sure if he could keep up his irritated act for long. That annoying voice was doing a good job of keeping him busy.
*Admit it....you like Duo. You're gay..* said the voice evilly.
"I am NOT GAY!!!* he yelled back. *Why are you doing this anyway?*
*I'm your conscience. I have to tell you the truth...And the truth is:* the voice waited, relishing in the dramatic pause.
*What?*
*You've got a crush on Duo!* the voice giggled while Wufei groaned aloud. Duo started, wondering if he'd him hurt while he was moving.
"Uh..g-gomen Wufei. I'll just move over here and we can both get back to sleep,"he said, pulling away to go curl up in one corner. He hadn't meant to embarass him, it had just happened. Of course that didn't explain why he felt so bad about it. Lord knew he'd done something equally annoying to the other pilots. Duo curled up a little tighter, not wanting to think about it.
"No...Duo, it's okay...I'm sorry...I didn't mean to push you away... I don't mind...we were both just tired and cold, that's all," Wufei smiled a little, reassurringly.
*Ah, he might of been tired and cold. But you, my friend, were turned on.. Admit it!!!!* his conscience taunted.
"You sure?" Duo actually sounded hesitant. He didn't want to end getting smacked if Wufei changed his mind.
"Of course. You're gonna freeze if you don't just come of over here..." Wufei gestured at the very visble cracks in the walls and ceiling. Indeed, the blanket was the one insulator in the entire room. Duo shrugged and curled up back under the blanket, not really meaning to, but unconsciously moving back towards the heat source. Wufei did the same and before either them knew it, there was barely an inch of space between the two. Both jerked away when they encountered one another, creeping back to the separate side of the blanket. Five minutes later, it happened again.
"Maxwell, I give up. If we're just keeping each other warm, it shouldn't matter should it?" Wufei sighed, trying his best to ignore the little voice in his head again, who was now singing Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden.
"No, of course not. I mean I'd snuggle up to Relena if it meant getting warm. But I gotta say, Wu, if it was choice between you and her, you'd win everytime..." Duo grinned. *Now what the hell did I say that for?*
"Hn."
"You sound like Heero," Duo sighed, content as he slowly grew warmer next to the other boy.
"I should take that as an insult..."
"If you don't want to be a pyscho-spandex soldier, you should," Duo grinned, his head on Wufei's shoulder once more. It felt so good to be warm and Wufei didn't seem to mind sharing heat.
"Just remember who's keeping you warm, Maxwell," Wufei glared. He did not like being compared to Heero, ever.
"Couldn't forget if I tried, Wuffie," another manic grin.
"You know I think I liked it better when you were asleep," the grin was met with a scowl.
"Me too. There weren't pushy chinese boys yelling at me." This was rewarded with silence.
"I don't yell at you," Wufei's voice was unusually soft. Duo twisted his head to look up at the Shenlong pilot. His oynx eyes were gentle too and warm.
"No, maybe not,"Duo yawned sleepily, catlike and rested his head on the other boy's shoulder once more. He wondered idly what his fellow pilots would think should they find the two like that.
*Oi, They'd probably faint from shock, then wonder what drugs we're taking...*That thought earned a grin and he chuckled slightly.
"What's so funny?"
"Just thinking what the others would do if they found us all curled up together."
"Well?" Wufei tried not to sound too curious, despite the fact he'd been wondering that same thing himself.
"They'd think we were together,"Duo snuggled closer. *I wonder if he'd mind......waitaminute.....am I feeling for Wufei?* shock parylyzed his brain for a moment, so that he almost missed what the other boy said next.
"Would you mind them thinking that?" Wufei asked again without thinking. *What?!? I did not just say that! i didn't! What is brain not attached to mouth anymore? Where did that come from?*
"Nani?" duo's eyes were wide as saucers when he looked up again.
*Funny he doesn't look mad...And he's not tense..Just surprised?* Wufei felt a surge of relief. Maybe he wouldn't have to deal with the braided boy's rejection just yet...
*Wait! Rejection? Who said I'm offering anything to him?* he growled at his mind.
*I am.* his conscience snickered.
"I wanted to know if you'd mind.....if the others thought we were.... together," Wufei said finally, when both his mind and the room fell silent.
"I...."
"Would you?"Wufei felt his throat tighten.
"Well...."
"Are you even going to answer?"
"...." Duo stared at him for a while. *Wow, is he suggesting what I think he is suggesting? One way to find out...*
Duo leaned forward, gently kissing the other boy. He relished the sensation, especially when Wufei kissed back, if a little hesitantly. Despite this, the Shenlong pilot was practically going into cardiac arrest.
*He's kissing me. I'm kissing him. He's kissing me. Oh my god, is this what heaven's supposed to be? And why do I feel this way? What's wrong with me? It's Duo!! he's not attractive, he's annoying. I'm not supposed to be kissing him. I'm supposed to be yelling at him for talking so damn much!! Well, he's not doing a whole lot of talking at the moment, but still!* Frustrated, Wufei tried to push away and yell.
"Mmmm..." was all that would come out of his mouth. And it was a very satsified "Mmmm" at that. And instead of pushing the other boy away, he pulled him closer.
*Can't fight fate, dear Wufei* said his conscience.
*For once, I agree with you.*
The End
