~Oooh-oooh
Everybody's got something
They had to leave behind
One regret from yesterday
That just seems to grow with time~
Wufei watched as Duo walked up the aisle to stand beside Heero in front of the altar. On the outside, his face was one of non-chalance, his eyes cold, posture straight and stiff. He was every bit the image of the aristocrat he was raised to be. An aura of coolness, and composure in all situations surrounded him, giving him the image of total control.
~There's no use looking back or wondering
How it could be now or might have been
All this I know but still I can't find ways
To let you go~
But on the inside....that was a different story. Inside, he was dying. As the minutes, seconds passed, a bit of his already broken heart shattered, and drifted away. His heart ached at the loss of his beloved, and all he longed for was to run up to the altar and hold the one thing he loved dearest, the one person he loved the most in the world. But he couldn't. The pilot belonged to someone else now.
~I never had a dream come true
'Til the day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby~
Duo now stood next to Heero, and as the two joined hands and smiled at each other, Wufei's heart broke just a bit more. Beside him, Quatre squeezed his arm, the only person besides Trowa who knew the turmoil he was going through. He tore his eyes away from the couple in front to look at the blond boy, and in the aquamarine eyes, he saw compassion, as well as a sorrow and an understanding inside that almost made Wufei break down right there. But he wouldn't. He had promised himself that he wouldn't embarrass his loved one by losing control.
~I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day
And I know no matter where life takes me to
A part of me will always be with you~
Wufei looked back at the happy couple, and thought back to when his own happy relationship had ended:
(Flashback)
Wufei's eyebrows furrowed together, the words his lover had just spoken not registering. "What?"
Soft blue eyes caught his gaze. "I'm sorry, 'Fei. But I can't go on with you. My feelings have changed for you...I'm sorry." Something in the boy's voice caught the Chinese pilot's attention.
"Something, or rather, some*one* has changed your feelings, haven't they?" he asked softly, brushing back a piece of black hair that kept falling into his face.
~Somewhere in my memory
I've lost all sense of time
And tommorow can never be
'Cos yesterday is all that fills my mind~
The eyes saddened, and the pilot reached out to brush the hair out of the Chinese boy's face. Wufei recoiled back, and the other pilot winced and replied, "You always knew me to well, 'Fei-kun. I've grown feelings for someone else, and its not fair to you to pretend I love you the same way I did before. But you must realize I still love you, just in a different way."
Wufei choked back his tears, and replied in a cool voice, "Then I suppose that this relationship is over. I will be moving out shortly, so that I will have no more distractions interfere with the missions."
He turned to pack his belongings, but the soft voice stopped him. "Please, Wufei. Don't do this. Don't act cold. We dropped our masks so long ago, don't put yours back up. Don't go."
(End flashback)
~There's no use looking back or wondering
How it should be now or might have been
All this I know but still I can't find ways
To let you go~
All he had wanted to do that day was so get down on his knees and beg for his love to stay with him. To throw his arms around him, and never let go. But he hadn't. He had indeed put his cold mask up again, and this time, he had built walls around himself twice as thick. He had then moved out of the house, and into another safe-house. The only interaction he had had with the other pilots as of late was when he saw them on joint missions, even though he had requested to be given solo-missions only.
And then he had received an invitation to his beloved's wedding.
~I never had a dream come true
'Til the day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby~
(Flashback)
Wufei tore open the envelope carefully with shaking hands, recognizing his love's handwriting. For a moment, he dared to hope with all of his heart that his love wanted him back. Maybe....just maybe....
But no letter came out. Instead, a vanilla-shaded invite appeared in his trembling hand, that read: "You are invited to..."
He opened it, and his heart lept to his throat. It read, "We would be honored if you were to appear to the joyful wedding of Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell at the Lady of the Lake Church on L3...." The trembling of his hands became to great, and as the invite fluttered to the ground, he collapsed to his knees, and began to sob. Wufei put his hands to his face, and the tears came rolling through his fingers and down his neck...
(End Flashback)
~I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day
And I know no matter where life takes me to
A part of me will always be with you~
He snapped back to the present, just in time to hear the priest say loudly, "...speak now, or forever hold your piece." For a few seconds, there was complete silence in the church, and he seriously contemplated yelling, "NO! Don't do it! I still love you!" His mouth opened ever so slightly, and he drew a deep breath...
But at the last second, his breath caught in his throat, and the priest continued on. "Then I now pronounce you, husband, and....ummm...." the man flushed slightly and finished, "husband."
Wufei watched as Duo grinned and Heero smiled, and the priest just shrugged and smiled back. 'It's for the best,' he told himself. 'He wouldn't be happy with me anyway....he wouldn't have come back to me....'
~You'll always be the dream that fills my head
Yes you will, say you will
You know you will, oh baby~
"You may now kiss the bri-er...umm...yeah..." the poor man flushed brighter, and this time, both Heero and Duo laughed. He shrugged again, and sighed. And Wufei's heart broke just a bit more...
Heero took Duo into his arms, and dipping him back ever-so-slightly, he pressed his lips firmly against Duo's, and the braided pilot wrapped his arms around the Japanese boy. And Wufei's heart ached just a bit more...
~You'll always be the one I know
I'll never forget~
The two marched down the aisle, grinning and laughing and waving, and Wufei looked down at his hands. Gods, but he wanted to sob right now...
Outside, the happy couple walked around greeting everyone and expressing their thanks. Wufei lingered at the edge of the laughing, cheering crowd, not sure if he should bolt, or stay to give his congratulations, for he was happy that at least his love had found happiness. However, before he could make that decision, they made it for him.
Duo and Heero stopped just in front of him, and Wufei paled a little. The American's eyes saddened, and the Japanese's grew full of sorrow and guilt, and Wufei had to look down. He started to edge backwards, to escape before any more damage could be done, when a soft voice stopped him. "Wufei, I'm glad you came." He looked up to find two-sets of blue eyes, one pair slightly more violet than the other watching him. Duo smiled slightly, and said, "Yes, I am glad too that you came. We've both missed you, we never get to see you anymore." Before Wufei could react, he threw his arms around the Chinese youth to hug him, and then he backed off, and continued, "Well, I'll leave you two to get re-aquainted." With that, the American bounced off, and Wufei turned to leave.
~It's no use looking back or wondering
Because love is a strange and funny thing~
"'Fei. Please wait."
~No matter how I try and try
I just can't say goodbye,
no, no, no, no...~
Wufei turned to the familiar blue eyes watching him, carressing his face like they used to. "Yes?"
Heero smiled at him, and said, "I'm so happy you came. I was afraid to hope you would....I've missed you. You know you never had to move out..."
Wufei smiled sadly back. "Yes, but I just couldn't miss your big day. I'll be going home now. It was nice to see you again." Heero's smile turned bittersweet, and he lifted his hand to touch Wufei's cheek.
"Good bye. See you around then." This time, as he turned to leave, nothing stopped him.
~I never had a dream come true
'Til the day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby~
Heero watched Wufei walk away, something un-readable in his eyes. The Chinese man walked down the sidewalk, and then dissapeared behind some trees leading to the parking lot. For a few seconds, he watched the spot were Wufei had vanished, and then he looked down to stare at the ring on his left hand. And something in his heart began to break...
~I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day~
From behind, two arms wrapped around his waist. Duo's head rested on his shoulder, and he leaned forward to kiss the Japanese pilot on the cheek. Heero turned his face, leaning into the kiss. He felt Duo's smile against his face, and he relaxed. But the American's next words blew him away.
"You still love him, don't you?"
~And I know no matter where life takes me to
A part of me will always be...~
Heero turned around to stare at Duo with wide, shocked eyes. Duo just smiled back, and hugged Heero. Then he pulled back a little and said, "You do. You still love him. In fact, I don't think you ever stopped. Am I right?"
Heero looked down before replying, "Yeah...I do. I just realized it." Looking back up, he said quickly, "But I still love you. That's why I married you." He leaned forward to kiss Duo on the mouth. Duo smiled against his mouth, and put his head back on Heero's shoulder.
Whispering into the shell-like ear, he said softly, "Yeah, I know." The two then went back into the crowd to enjoy the rest of their wedding celebration.
~A part of me will always be with you~
