~I'm finding my way back to sanity again~
Duo sat on the metal railing on the balcony outside his room. He was staying over with the rest of the pilots at one of Quatre's safe houses for the next 2 weeks, and then they would all split up again, to go their own seperate ways. Inside the room, all he could hear was the rustling of paper and cloth as the wind blew through it; he had left the doors open so that the room wouldn't be so stuffy. But suddenly, he could sense someone behind him, and after a moment, relaxed. It was only Heero. His love. His almost lover. They had been involved off and on for the last 2 and a half years, and right now, it was on again. For now. With the way Heero had been acting these last few days, he could tell that the Asian boy was about to break it off...again. Duo had only broken the relationship off once...the rest of it had always been Heero...
~Though I don't really know what I'm gonna do when I get there~
"Duo."
"Yes, Heero?"
"We need to talk."
"...I know..."
~Just take a breath and hold on tight Spin around one more time~
"...Duo..."
Oh, he knew Heero never meant to hurt him. Not once. The brown-haired boy just couldn't let go of something he had once had. It was so hard to let go of a first love. And so the two of them would be together for a while, thinking that this was it, this would finally work. This was finally their time, this time could last forever, they were in love. Nothing would ever take them apart. They had found what they were looking for.
~And gracefully fall back to the arms of grace~
But it never was. They would slowly realize, once more, that they just weren't meant to be. Their differences were just to great, the relationship slowly fizzled out. But it never faded completley. Something always kept them interested, whether they realized it or not. Slowly, the two of them would come back to each other, willing to try it once more. And the cycle would only repeat itself. Duo had had other relationships, Heero had only ever been involved with Duo. But it was always the same. Duo would break it off with whoever he was interested in, and would come back to Heero. No matter what. It was the slow destruction of every relationship he had ever been in since Heero.
~Cause I am hanging on every word you're saying~
"...Duo...I'm sorry...but..."
"...I know...."
Duo didn't want to break up. Not again. He had truly thought that maybe this time, they could make it work. But if this is what Heero wanted, then who was he to tell him no?
Even so....he had actually put his whole heart into it this time...
~Even if you don't wanna speak tonight That's alright, alright with me~
Heero watched as Duo looked down at the tips of his shoes. He didn't want to hurt the braided pilot...but he just wanted out. It wasn't that the relationship was a bad one, or that Duo wasn't "the One", but....how was he supposed to know what he wanted if Duo was all he had ever had?
It was all he could do to not reach out and comfort the sad pilot. All he wanted was to reach out and smooth his hand down the back of Duo's head, for many times when he was upset, this motion seemed to sooth the American. But for now...he knew that any contact what so ever would make this whole situation infinite times worse. It would remind him what he was losing, make him second-guess himself. Not to mention the effect it would have on the American pilot. The simple motion would probably drive the American to tears, and seeing that would tear Heero's heart out.
~Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door And listen to you breathing Its where I wanna be, yeah~
Duo stared at the bottom of his pants, trying to think of something to say to Heero that would stop him. 'No...I can't do that...this is what he wants...he must have a good reason for this...' But God, did it hurt. He had put his heart into this one, tried to make it the best one out of them all.
"Duo...I just....I need some time...and space. How am I supposed to find the 'One' if you're all I've ever known?"
"But do I make you happy?"
~Where I wanna be~
"Yes...you do...."
"Then why are you pushing me away? I thought you were happy with me..."
"Oh, Duo..."
~I'm looking past the shadows in my mind into the truth~
A tear fell down Duo's cheek, and he silently thanked God that his back was to Heero. He wanted to reach up and brush it away, but to do so would give the Asian pilot a sign of emotion.
"I'm so sorry, Duo...but...I just can't do this anymore..."
"...okay..."
"Good night, Duo."
~And i'm trying to identify the voices in my head God which one is you?~
And he was gone. Behind him, Duo could sense the pilot turning and walked silently away, and as soon as he heard the slight click of the door opening, then a few seconds later, as if Heero had paused at the door, closing, the tears began to fall freely down the pale face. The American bowed his head, to caught up in emotion to realize that there was someone else behind him now.
~Let me feel one more time what if feels like to feel And break these calluses off me one more time~
Wufei watched as the young pilot brought up his hands to his face and silently wiped away the tears. He had seen Heero come to the room, and knew what was going to happen. The Chinese pilot had accidently come across Duo one of the first times they had broken up, and had had to comfort the slight boy. No one else had been in the safe house at the time, otherwise Wufei would have sent the pilot to Quatre for comfort. But since then, Duo had found Wufei's guidance in these times rather soothing, and had since been running to the black-haired pilot each time. And each time this happened, Duo would put more and more of his heart into it, and each time, Duo would come out more and more heartbroken. Yui had no idea what sort of pain he caused the American boy. Each time this happened, Duo spent longer periods of time crying on the shoulder of the Chinese pilot.
~Cause I am hanging on every word you're saying Even if you don't wanna speak tonight That's alright, alright with me~
"...Wufei..."
Surprised, the Chinese youth started. How had Duo known he was there? He had come in as silently as he could.
"Yes, Maxwell?"
Laughing softly at the name Wufei chose to call him, Duo merely said softly, "Would you come sit with me on the rail here?"
~Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside your door And listen to you breathing Its where I wanna be, yeah~
Settling down within a few inches of the sad boy, Wufei placed his hands in his lap, and allowed his usual perfect posture to slouch a bit because of balancing on the railing. Duo took all this in with clouded violet eyes, before he turned back to looking at the sky. It was a beautiful night, with gently glowing stars covering the black canopy above them. Nothing in the universe, no simulation of man, could ever match the perfect beauty of a natural Earth night in the country.
And somehow, with Wufei here next to him, he felt strangely calm. In his state of mind, with the events that had just happened, Duo should have been crying, or at least depressed. But for now, with the soothing presence of his...best friend, or closest thing to it as a Gundam pilot could get...near him, Duo felt as if nothing wrong could touch him.
~Oh I don't want a thing from you~
As his eyes traveled over the night sky, Duo slowly went back mentally to the times he had gone to Wufei for comfort. The first night Wufei had found Duo crying would have been funny had it not been so serious. Wufei had looked so worried for him, so unlike his usual self, and had had no idea how to comfort a crying teenage boy. But somehow, he had found a shred of sympathy and empathy for the sad pilot, and had managed to calm him down. Since that night, Duo had found himself prefering to run to the stoic boy for guidance as opposed to Quatre's mothering protectivness. Somehow, it was infinitley more comforting...
~Bet you're tired of me waiting for The scraps to fall off of your table to the ground~
Everytime he looked into those deep, endless dark eyes, he found something soothing and welcoming just below the surface, just for him. Even in the heat of battle, even in the heat of an argument, Wufei's eyes held nothing but caring for the people around him, and it seemed that Duo was the only one who saw it. The strength and solidity of the will inside the Chinese boy gave the American something to lean on when he needed it, and in turn, the American gave it back to Wufei. Duo had only seen Wufei close to a break down only once. It had been right after a particularly bloody battle, where the Chinese boy had accidently killed 2 civilians, and had been as close to tears as Duo had ever seen. Duo had merely wrapped his arms around the stiff boy, holding him close, and after a few seconds, Wufei had gently returned the hug. For a few precious moments, Duo had slowly rubbed his back, soothing the trembling until it faded, and after it had stopped, the Chinese boy had simply pulled away and stared at Duo. Something unreadable had been in his eyes that night, and after about a minute, the Chinese boy had smiled an incredibley sad smile before slowly turning and walking back to his room.
~La da da da... Cause I just wanna be here now~
And now here the two of them sat, Wufei silently lending his comfort to the slight boy next to him.
~Cause I am hanging on every word you're saying Even if you don't wanna speak tonight That's alright, alright with me~
Wordlessly, Duo blindly reached out with one hand, and grasped one of Wufei's, bringing their joined hands to rest in the space between them. It wasn't meant to entice...just meant to draw strength from a friend.
Mouth going dry, Wufei realized that he wanted it to be more. He had wanted more for a very long time. But no, it couldn't...wouldn't happen. He couldn't use Duo like that...for there was no way he could compare to the Perfect Soldier. Duo needed someone stronger than him, someone who could protect him. Someone who wouldn't leave him. With the war, Wufei could promise none of that.
~Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door And listen to you breathing Its where i wanna be, yeah~
But maybe...just for tonight...it was okay to hold hands. Afterall, it didn't mean a thing...
~Where I wanna be~
Duo smiled slightly to himself. He had thought so. The bronze youth had feelings for him. He could tell in the way the fingers had tightened ever so slightly, the widening of the eyes, the slight opening in the mouth. But what to do about it?
~Cause I am hanging on every word you're saying Even if you don't wanna speak tonight That's alright, alright with me~
He would wait...wait until he was sure he could pursue a relationship with someone other than Heero...but until then...
~Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door And listen to you breathing Its where i wanna be, yeah~
Duo thought about the episodes of crying...of the soothing arms he had run to...of the comfort he had drawn from him...
...but until then...
He gave Wufei's hand a little squeeze, and turned to look at the Asian youth. Wufei looked at him with a sort of confused question in his eyes, and Duo merely smiled at him. After a searching look, Wufei finally seemed to understand. It wasn't a commitment...not yet anyway. It was...a promise of sorts. One that would hold the two friends together until they could figure out how to go on.
And for tonight, it was enough.
