Chapter 3

The Night of Heero and Trowa's Dinner Party...

"Duo?"

"Yes?"

"Why do I have to wear this?" Wufei asked as he stared at himself in the mirror.

I smiled from behind him as I smoothed down the shoulders and sides of the black suit. It had came from my own closet since I didn't have enough time to buy him one since having it tailored and made would take too long. Besides, I had a suit that I bought a while ago that ended up not fitting me so what's the point of making another suit?

"You have to wear this because it's going to be a formal dinner and you're expected to wear the right kind of clothing," I explained as I turned him around and took in the wonderful sight. Wufei looked absolutely gorgeous in the suit, it fit him perfectly. Molding over those perfect limbs and muscles that I could only imagine lay underneath the smooth cloth. I knew I was falling for him, I was probably already long gone the first moment I laid eyes on his painting before he came to life. Wufei coming to life only saved my sanity and stole my heart away.

"I believe I wore this kind of clothing to formal meetings in the past...But it was so long ago," Wufei murmured as he looked up at me with the most innocent eyes. Who knew someone who was in his early twenties could look like a small child while being incredibly beautiful and alluring at the same time. Gods, the affect was drugging.

"Really? That's nice," I said softly as I stepped away from him. "Come on, Wufei, we have a party to go to!"

"Finally! I thought you two would never show up!" Quatre Raberba Winner said as he appeared at the archway to the ballroom of the Yuy/Barton mansion with Zechs Merquise behind him. Quatre grinned when he saw Wufei and then winked at me.

I glared at him. They still didn't know about Wufei...Funny, I thought Heero or Trowa would have told them by now.

Wufei just continued to smile as he stood there taking in everything around him at the dinner party.

"This is all so...different," he murmured as he took in the lights, people and the food.

"Yeah, well, this is a different time ain't it?" I said quietly, smiling. He looked so beautiful under the soft party lights. His dark hair shone and his eyes were sparkling with something that just made him more desirable. I took a deep breath and tried to calm my hormones as I turned to Quatre and Zechs. "So, where's Heero and Trowa?" A man dressed up in a catering outfit passed by and I grabbed some champagne off the tray. Wufei reached for it as well but I stopped him. For some reason, giving him alcohol just didn't seem right.

"Oh, mingling, as what hosts are suppose to do. I wonder what's all of this about," Zechs said thoughtfully.

"I think they're finally going to announce their engagement! I mean, look at all the guests? It looks like friends and family only," Quatre said with an amused sparkle in his blue eyes. He leaned closer against Zechs and smiled at up at his boyfriend. "Someday that's gonna be us, isn't it Zechs?"

Zechs smiled and kissed Quatre on the lips and nodded.

Wufei turned to me with a confused expression. "Why did they do that?"

I choked on my champagne.

"Duo?" Wufei began to bang the feel of his palm between my shoulder blades until I finally stopped coughing.

"Are you all right, Duo?" Quatre asked with a confused expression.

"F-fine," I wheezed as I straightened and cleared my throat.

"Was it something I said?" Wufei asked, blinking in innocent confusion.

I just shook my head and swallowed the rest of my champagne in one big gulp.

"What are they doing, Duo?" Wufei asked as he pointed at the many dancers who were whirling around to a beautiful waltz that I couldn't remember the name to. Hey, I'm an artist, not a musician!

"They're dancing, Wufei," I told him.

"Dancing? But that's not dancing," Wufei protested in confusion as he continued to stare on in amazement. "Dancing? I've never seen people dance like this before..."

"It's different, where ever you come from isn't it?" I pointed out.

"Yes, it is," Wufei agreed. "But this type of dancing...It is strange."

"Come on then, let me show you how to dance," I offered as I held out my hand. It wasn't a scandalous thing for two men to dance at Heero and Trowa's parties since, obviously, those two were gay as well. Everyone in this room was either gay, lesbian or both and the straight people were all very, very comfortable with it. There was nothing wrong with it.

Wufei smiled at me, that sweets innocent smile that shouldn't belong on a man's face but it seemed to fit Wufei perfectly. He seemed so much like a child, a pure sweet child that didn't belong in any world but his own.

"All right, teach me how to dance, Duo," he said, nodding his head as he placed his hand in my own. It was so small...Was it truly possible to for a man to have such a delicate hand? Gods, anyone could be fooled into thinking he was a woman. The possibility was far too likely. He was a dream to be truthful. A complete dream. It made perfect sense he came from a painting, he simply wasn't real at all.

I smiled as I closed my larger hand over his own and led him to the dance floor as couples moved a bit out of the way for us. I stood there with his hands and positioned them properly. Then, counting the time, I moved and pulled him along with me. I moved slowly so he could catch on to the pattern of the waltz. I didn't want him falling all over his own feet trying to catch up to me.

We moved slowly and gracefully, I suppose you could say. Everything was smoothed and languid as we floated across the dance floor with great ease. It was almost unnerving how quick Wufei seemed to learn and catch on to things. Already he spoke English as if he was born speaking it, he could read almost better than me and he was now dancing with so much grace and elegance people wouldn't think he just learned how to. Amazing, really. Who was this mysterious man that I was falling undeniably in love with? A dream, an angel, a painting. All of it so unreal and yet I could actually touch it, feel it and breathe it.

Wufei closed his eyes and began to hum like a child to the beautiful waltz. I smiled and pulled him closer as we continued to dance slowly to the allegro pace of the music.

As I held him I wondered, Who was Wufei? He only told me just a little bit about him. All I knew was that he came from a different time and place and that he was brought here because he was painted into this time and world and he wanted to come. That was it. Who was he? Was he a warrior? A scholar? A prince? What role did he play in life before coming here? What did he like to eat? What was his favorite color? What kind of things fascinates him? All of them trivial in a way yet so very important to me. I wanted to know him, this dream that I love. I wanted to touch more than his skin, I wanted to touch his heart and soul and learn everything I could about him. Was it stupid and silly? I don't know...All I knew was that I loved Chang Wufei and I wanted him.

"Duo?" Wufei asked in that smooth tenor of his.

"Yes, Wufei?" I asked. I loved saying his name, so soft and it just flew through my lips every time I said them. It was such a breathy name, really. Something that would sound so very sweet in the thralls of passion--If it ever reached that between him and I.

"I like this kind of dancing," Wufei said, smiling softly.

I smiled back and nodded. "So do I, Wufei. So do I."

~*~

I looked over to my right and almost sighed as I watched Wufei's smooth, innocent bronze face while he slept. He had exhausted himself at the dinner party. Eating, drinking and dancing like a crazed child.

And just like I predicted, Heero and Trowa finally announced their engagement. After that, the partying just became harder. Wufei laughed and dragged me down to the dance floor over and over with each new song. Whether it was a waltz or something up beat, he wanted to dance. He said this kind of dancing was more fun than the kind he was taught back in his home. Again, I had wondered what kind of him he had came from. There were so many mysteries to this man-child.

Wufei sighed softly as he shifted a bit, and to my delight, moved closer to me until his head was rested against my shoulder. He shifted uncomfortably before finally finding a spot he liked and sighed back into a comfortable sleep.

I took my eyes off the road once again to admire his seamless and flawless beauty. There was not a single flaw in him. His skin was golden and completely smooth, he didn't have a single blemish. His lips were silky, there wasn't a single sign of chapped lips. His hair was like the fine threads of a spider's web: smooth, shiny, almost translucent at times and completely perfect without a single split end. And his eyes, oh his eyes! They were perfect orbs of obsidian that reflected everything, making them shine and sparkle like something out of a fairy tale, something I never thought could actually happen to a living thing. Did a person's eyes really "sparkle" without the help of light? But Wufei's eyes did and it just pulled me deeper and deeper each time I looked at him.

I recklessly bent down and pressed a deep, chaste kiss to Wufei's forehead before I returned my attention to the road.

~*~

When I was sleeping deeply later that night, lost in my dreams of holding Wufei in my arms he appeared. His hair fell into his eyes and brushed against his smooth cheek as he lifted the blankets and slid in beside me before snuggling himself deeper against me and falling back asleep.

I lay there, stunned as I stared at the back of Wufei's head as the man-child slept peacefully, nestled against me. Then I smiled sleepily and wrapped my arms around him, actually holding him rather than dreaming to, and fell back sleep.

*glares at the chapter and folds her arms* I think I just made it far too poetic and flowery for my own stomach. I cannot believe I wrote that! Damnit, I just read Anne Rice...figures. *rolls eyes* Well, tell me what you think! GoD pushed and pushed so I finally wrote it! Thank her everyone. My dearest slave driver is the one who gets me going when I don't feel like it and I don't have time. *grin*
