Author's notes: Well, this is my first shot at a Digimon Tamers fic, and who would've guessed it would be a Diaries one.
Disclaimer: This fic was written with permission from Lord Archive, since this takes place in the same timeline as Red D-Arc Diaries. Otherwise, I don't own Digimon, that belongs to Toei.

Entry 01: Be Careful What You Wish For
Author: Izumi Ryu
David stepped off of the school bus and onto the sidewalk in front of the apartment complex he lived at. He stopped and watch the scene as the door closed behind him. Several kids his age or maybe a year or two older than he was. They started to break off into their separate groups and walk in different directions. He sighed when the bus started to drive off. The warm summer day did little to improve David's attitude. It was the end of another school year. Two years left of junior high, and all that meant to David was that he was alone for the next three months.
David was tall for his age, and could actually pass for being a year or so older. He wiped the sweat off of his forehead, his black hair doing little to help cool him down, nor his navy t-shirt. He couldn't wait to switch out his jeans for some shorts, though. He overheard some other kids chatting about what appeared to be party plans before he ascended the stairs. One of the things they wouldn't even consider inviting him to. He started to ignore them as he continued up the stairs. However, he couldn't help but think one thing. I wish I wasn't alone.
David reached the top of the staircase and started to walk down the balcony towards the second door. He reached into his jean pocket for the key and pulled it out. After unlocking the door, he slowly opened the door to a rather tidy apartment. David's father was never around much, but he always stressed keeping things clean. He closed and locked the apartment door, and after setting his blue mesh backpack on the floor, he plopped down on the couch.
He looked over to a stand right by the couch, where the telephone and answering machine were located, the answering machine's light was flashing, indicating there was a message on it. David just reached over the arm of the sofa and hit the play button on the answering machine.
"Hey, David. This is your father. I'm just letting you know I'm going to be late today. You are on your own for dinner tonight. I'm sorry, son. Bye."
This was nothing new for David. He had been used to since his mother and father divorced. David wondered if his father really even cared anymore. David's mother seemed to drop off the face of the Earth shortly after the divorce. He was never told what happened to her, and it seemed that his father was trying to avoid telling him.
David finally just stood up and picked up his bag, before walking to his bedroom. He tossed his bag onto the bed in the middle of the room and walked to his desk. On the desk was a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse and mouse pad, and some sort of card reader. He reached to the computer at the side of the desk and booted it up. It seemed like the Digimon video game was his activity of choice for the night.
As Windows XP finally loaded on the screen, he immediately clicked the game's icon. As the game started up, it gave him a list of Digimon to pick from, usually Adult or Child level. However, he immediately went to his usual choice, V-mon. The blue, lizard-like creature had no long-range attacks, and had to remain on the ground, which left this digimon at a disadvantage. However, David always liked the challenge. He reached over for the deck of Digi-battle cards he used for the game. Most of these were just a collection of cards he got from people he had met, who found no use for them. At least he found use for those cards.
He looked at the screen as the game began, but the strange thing about the game is that it started to change from computer animation to looking real enough to confuse it for a movie. This confused David, but the program continued to play like normal. "This will be very interesting," David remarked.
David watched as V-mon was about to confront a Stingmon. "Oh, please. You could send me a better challenge than that," David remarked, pulling the Fly Trap card from his deck, which had an image of a strange triangular shape on it.
"Spiking Finish!!" Stingmon yelled before it dove down at V-mon.
"Not so fast. Card Slash! Fly Trap!" David said, as he swiped the card through the card reader.
V-mon dodged Stingmon's attack easily, causing the adult digimon to hit the dirt hard. However, Stingmon was stuck in place. V-mon charged towards Stingmon and then jumped at him. "V-Head!!" V-mon shouted as he rammed into Stingmon, and ripped completely through the insectoid digimon. Stingmon exploded into data. V-mon focused as he absorbed Stingmon's data, making Stingmon a lot more powerful.
"Heh, pathetic. Not even an adult could beat V-mon as long as I'm helping him," David remarked. "Send me a better challenge."
As if on cue, V-mon ran into three Tailmon. "Now, that's more like it." The three Tailmon charged at V-mon, bearing their claws as they came into range. V-mon jumped before the Tailmon would hit him. They collided with each other, but quickly got back to face V-mon.
David was about to grab another card, but he stopped when he heard a loud roar from the speakers. The Tailmon and V-mon turned their attention to the source of the noise, but David had to wait for the speakers to pan over to the source. His eyes went wide when he saw the Greymon on the screen. "He's pissed," David muttered. He reached over for the card deck, knowing V-mon would need a lot more help. Greymon prepared to fire off his attack.
"I'm not leaving you to die, V-mon. Card Slash! Aero Wing!" David ran another card through the card reader as it granted V-mon dragon wings.
"Mega Flame!!" Greymon spat out a fireball at the four small digimon. V-mon took flight to avoid being caught in the blast, but the three Tailmon weren't as lucky. They were nothing but data when the smoke cleared. Then, Greymon absorbed the Tailmon's data.
"No, way," David said. "They can absorb data too?"
David then looked at the time. It was already about 11 PM. David needed to get to bed soon or his father would be pissed. He attempted to exit the game, but the program would not respond to the command. "What's going on with the program? Why isn't it ending?"
Then, he realized why the program refused to end. This was no longer a game. He was aiding a real V-mon through combat. "I refuse to let V-mon die, but if I'm not through by the time my father gets home, I'm in deep shit."
David took a while to think about things, then decided to continue. "Let's go, V-mon," David muttered. David didn't notice one of the cards near the top of his deck flash and change. All he did was blindly reach over to the top of the deck and picked it up.
On the monitor, V-mon and Greymon continued to stare each other down. Greymon was going to be a lot harder to beat. "Card Slash! Metal Attack!" V-mon's forehead became coated in metal as he dove down at the dinosaur. "Metal V-Head!!" V-mon slammed into Greymon's head, but the dinosaur's head proved to be hard enough to withstand the attack.
V-mon hit the ground behind Greymon and quickly got up to take flight again. Greymon slowly turned around and fired off another Mega Flame.
"Card Slash! Counter Attack!!" David swiped another card through the reader, but all V-mon did was dodge the attack, nothing else happened.
"Oh, I forgot that card can't be used on a Child." David reached for another card. "Let's try disabling Greymon. Card Slash! Flood!"
Large amounts of water started to flow into the battlefield, submerging the Greymon to about chest level. "Now, try Aquatic Attack!!" David swiped another card through the reader. This caused V-mon's wings to disappear as V-mon dove straight into the flood waters and swam for Greymon like a torpedo. He tried to ram the dinosaur head first, but the attack had no effect as the flood waters started to recede.
"Dammit. What else can I do?" David asked as he picked up the next card. However, the next card was not a card David recognized. The card was solid blue with a Digital looking image in the middle of it. It looked like a D with a small reptilian monster coming out of it. "This better do something useful," David muttered as he ran the card through the reader.
When the card was fully swiped, the monitor flashed a bright white light. David covered his eyes to shield him from the bright light. He failed to notice that the card reader was also glowing and starting to change shape. He didn't fail to notice something landing on his lap, however.
When he felt it was safe, David uncovered his eyes and saw V-mon lying down in his lap, physically exhausted from the battle. He looked up at the computer monitor and saw that not only had the game closed, but it had somehow deleted itself. The icon on the desktop was gone. He then looked over where his card reader should be and saw a strange device, like some sort of handheld game. It had a white body, but it also had a navy ring around it.
"This has got to be a dream," David said. He just yawned, then rubbed his eyes. Knowing he was too tired to think about what was going on, he shut off the computer and prepared for bed, after laying V-mon down onto it, now fast asleep. "I'll figure this out tomorrow," he muttered before he uncovered his bed and turned the lights off. The only light showing at all were lights from the skyscrapers of New York City in the distance, but viewable from David's bedroom window.
"Hey, David!! Wake up!!" a voice said.
David kept his eyes closed, trying to shake off his father. "Please, Dad. It's the weekend, let me sleep."
"Umm...my name's not 'Dad'," the voice replied.
David suddenly opened his eyes, seeing daylight had filled the room, and sat right up almost immediately. He looked over next to him and saw V-mon standing there. "V-mon?"
"That's me, unlike you'd like me to be someone else," V-mon said. "Like that 'Dad' person you were talking about."
In speaking of Dad, how am I going to explain this? David asked himself.
"By the way, thanks for saving me," V-mon said. "Ending up like those Tailmon were wasn't my idea of fun."
"I swore this was all a dream," David muttered.
"If this was a dream, you wouldn't feel this?" V-mon playfully punched David's arm. Then again, for V-mon, playfully punching still hurt David. David rubbed where V-mon had hit him.
"You made your point," David said. "Now, what am I gonna do about you? My father could find you rather easily."
"What? You don't want me around?"
"No, it's not that. I just don't think things will go over too well if he found you here."
"Not to worry about that. Along with fighting I'm real good when it comes to hiding." V-mon grinned. "How do you think I survived when you weren't there to help me?"
David looked over at the lizard. "That was all...for real?" David asked.
V-mon nodded in reply. This caused David to grasp his forehead in disbelief.
David then heard a knock on his bedroom door. V-mon quickly jumped off the bed and crawled underneath it. "I'm up!" David called out.
David's father, a plump, middle-aged man with a receding hairline, opened the door and looked in. "The office called me in this morning. You're on your own for the day."
David sighed. "Okay...I'll see you tonight then." His father stepped back and left the room, leaving the door partially open.
V-mon poked his head out from under the bed. "Is something wrong?" V-mon asked.
"No, nothing is wrong V-mon," David said. However, his father's words reminded David of the reason why he wanted V-mon around, he finally won't be alone.
"So, what are we going to do now?" V-mon asked.
"Relax," David said, standing up and walking to the closet in his room, preparing to get dressed. "It's the weekend; summer vacation has begun; I might as well make the best of it."
"Heh...no adventures, eh? How boring," V-mon remarked, sitting down on the bed.
"Yeah, well, we're in they city. I'm sure we can find something, but I can't take you out into public. If someone sees you, it may cause some problems," David told him. "I'll try to think of a better place for you to stay, but until then, you're stuck hiding in here."
"Oh, man..." V-mon said, starting to regret coming to the real world.
David came back out, dressed in jean shorts and a white T-shirt with the logo of the New York Yankees on it. "There's plenty to do around here, V-mon. Just try not to break anything or mess something up too bad. My dad would have a fit if something was messed up too badly."
"Okay," V-mon said.
David then looked at the clock, seeing it was already 11 o'clock. "Too late for breakfast. At least, I can still grab something to eat for lunch. Are you hungry V-mon?"
V-mon's stomach growled in response. "I guess that's a 'yes'," V-mon said.
David just chuckled at V-mon's remarked. "Come on, then. I'll make us something to eat."
V-mon sighed, sitting at the table with a hand over his stomach. "Whew...that was worth it," V-mon said.
"Remind me never to invite you to dinner," David remarked, after witnessing how sloppy V-mon ate. He finally picked up the dishes as he got up from the table. Then, he placed the dishes in the sink prepared to clean them. "I gotta go pick something up from the store soon, so you may want to hide in my room somewhere until I'm gone."
"I can't come with you?" V-mon asked.
"Sorry, V-mon. Not this time. I'm going to a public place," David apologized. After rinsing off the dishes and putting them in the dish washer, David dried his hands off and walked into his room. V-mon following him.
As David walked into his room, he looked onto his desk and saw the device where the card reader was. He went up to the desk and grabbed his wallet off of it, but his eyes never left that device.
"At least take that device with you," V-mon said. David picked up the device. Something seemed strange about it, but he felt he needed it with him. He picked it up and clipped the device to a belt loop on his shorts, seeing it wouldn't fit in any of his pockets.
He then picked up his card deck and put it in his pocket. On top of picking something up from the store, he figured he could try and get a few trades in at the card store, and possibly improve it. David then cracked the window open, leaving V-mon some fresh air. "I'll be back soon, V-mon. Bye."
V-mon sulked as David walked out the door and out of the apartment. He just looked around for something to do, with no real luck. However, several minutes later, he started to have a bad feeling. He looked out the window to see it had gotten foggy outside.
David walked down the stairs and rounded the corner to leave the apartment complex. He walked down the street and rounded the corner. The complex itself was right on the street corner and he needed to get to the city bus stop on the side of the complex. He would have to wait a while for the city bus to come around and pick him up, but sitting outside was worth the wait, especially in the summer.
However, David became worried as the clear sky started to look a little cloudier as thick fog clouded over the area. David looked around the area seeing it had become covered with a thick fog. "What the hell?" David asked standing up from the bench.
The device hanging off of David's shorts started beeping. He looked down at it, seeing the screen was flashing red. He picked it up and looked down at the screen. The image of a green humanoid Digimon appeared. The digimon wore what look like some sort of loin cloth and had several claws and spikes around his body, as well as huge teeth. It had a skull tattoo on its arm and carried a large club with nails in it. "Ogremon?" David asked. "Why is this thing showing me a picture of Ogremon?"
A shadowed image started to approach David from within the fog. The figure was definitely bigger than David, but what David noticed the most was the spikes coming out of its body. "That...could be a good reason why," David remarked as Ogremon became more visible to him. Ogremon then raised its club, ready to bring it down on the boy. David dove to the side, avoiding being hit by the club.
"Dammit," David said after hitting the concrete ground. David looked back only to see the ogre following him, about to swing his club again. David rolled away, avoiding another strike. However, David looked back to where the club hit, seeing that it had put a small crater into the concrete. "Not good," David remarked.
"David!" V-mon called out from above. V-mon descended down on Ogremon, giving him a solid kick to the face. That knocked Ogremon to the ground, but otherwise, did no real damage.
"V-mon?" David asked.
"Let me handle him. At least I get some fun out of being here," V-mon remarked, before turning back to Ogremon, who had gotten back on his feet. V-mon charged at Ogremon, and jumped straight into him. "V-Head!!" V-mon yelled as he rammed Ogremon head-first. Ogremon grunted a bit before grabbing V-mon's leg with his free hand.
V-mon just hung upside down, unable to defend himself. He turned to look at Ogremon's other arm, only to see the club heading straight at him. The lizard digimon quickly lifted his head and upper body up, letting the club swing harmlessly underneath. Then, he kicked Ogremon's hand with his free leg, which forced Ogremon to drop V-mon.
David just watched on as V-mon continued to struggle against the Adult-level digimon. Normally, V-mon would be able to wail on Ogremon, but only with David's help. He doubted the cards would work in real life. Then, David looked at his device. On the show, it would cause V-mon to evolve when in trouble, but he doubted it would work like that. That would have occurred by now. Then, his thumb slid over a long slot. He looked at where the slot was found and saw an opening like his card reader had. "This device has a card reader as well?" David asked. Then, David got an idea. He took the deck he had in his pocket out and started looking through it. "V-mon! Hang in there for a while! I think I know how you can win!"
"Easier said than done! Hurry!" V-mon yelled as he dodged another club strike. V-mon then stepped onto a bare part of the club and forced himself airborne, then kicked the ogre digimon in the head.
David continued to search frantically through his deck until he found the card he was looking for. The card had a picture of Metal Etemon holding his hand out. "This should do the job. Prepare to attack Ogremon head-on, V-mon!" David called out. He took the card and pocketed the rest of the deck. He picked up the device and started to run the card through the reader. "Card Slash! Metal Attack!"
V-mon charged at Ogremon again, this time, his forehead becoming coated in metal. "Metal V-Head!!" V-mon yelled out as he slammed into Ogremon and went straight through the Adult digimon. This final attack caused Ogremon to disperse into data. As the metal on V-mon's head disappeared, V-mon started to draw in Ogremon's data.
David sighed in relief, but he became more aware of where he was as the fog began to clear. "V-mon! Hide!"
V-mon realized what was going on and frantically looked around for somewhere to hide. He had to settle for some bushes over by the side of the apartment. He rushed for it, hoping that he would make it before the fog cleared completely. He dove and landed in the bushes, causing them to shake for a while. However, he managed to hide just as the fog dissipated completely.
David flopped down on the bed as soon as he walked into the bedroom. He tried to make sense of the battle that took place that afternoon, wondering how an Ogremon managed to make it to the real world. V-mon somehow had his help in getting to this world, but only because of that weird blue card. As many times as David tried to search for it, he couldn't find the card again in his stock of cards. However, Ogremon couldn't have come through with that same card.
David then sat up and looked where V-mon was. He had to rest after that battle with Ogremon. He figured that being here in the real world probably took more of a toll on the lizard than it would where he came from. All David knew was that things were looking up for him.
Next Entry: First Party-- David accidentally catches the end of an argument between a girl his age and her parents. After a rather lengthy discussion between the two, David gets invited to a party, which he reluctantly accepts. Things may be starting to look up for David, but it appears that some problems still remain as a Kabuterimon decides to crash the party.
