Short Summary

George is an English aristocrat who, after the death of his first wife, marries a Japanese woman. The story is about his daughter, Rin. Because she is half Japanese, her grandfather hates her, and refuses to meet her. Upon coming from Japan to England, she and her mother were in a car accident and her mother dies. She then has to cope her older sister, from her father's previous marriage who doesn't like her, and with her fathers 'would be fiancee' a baroness, who would do anything to marry the aristocrat. The baroness already has to children from a previous marriage, Thomas and Mary, and their one souce of entertainment is to tease and hurt Rin. Through it all, she endures, always remembering her promise to her mother that she will grow up to become a fine lady. She eventually makes friends with her sister, and the two become inseperable. Also on her side, she has the Bryton brothers: two young boys, sons of a count who live in the neighboring mansion.

Detailed Summary:

Season one

Rin's grandfather urges his son, George,to marry the Baroness because the marriage would solve all their financial problems. He invites the Baroness to live in George's home to take care of Rin and her sister, Sarah, while their father is traveling. The girls bond to cope with the Baroness's insufferable children. Their father then falls ill and cannot continue working to support the family's expenses, and it seems that the marriage is unaviodable. In an attempt to convince his reluctant son into marrying the baroness, the grandfather calls Sarah, the older of the two girls and urges her into not only accepting the marriage, but into convincing her father that it would be best. He also states that if George agrees to marry the baronness, then he will give in and accept Rin as a member of the family. Sarah is in despair, her love for her sister rivaling her hate for the baronness. She does agree, though, for the sake of her sister. When Rin finds out, she thinks that the only reason for her father's marriage is her acceptance into the family. She vows that she won't be the cause of her sister's pain, and decides to go back to Japan. When Edward, the younger of the Bryton brothers finds out her intentions, he tells her father. Touched by his daughter's selflessness, he breaks off the marriage and Rin stays in England.
Season two

Rin is now living with her father's aunt, while Sarah is living in her grandfather's castle. Their home, Marble Manor, has been put up on mortgage and their father is working tirelessly trying to earn enough money to buy back their home. Rin is in (middle?) school and an avid member of the equestrian club. However, because she is a freshman, she cannot ride a horse and must partake in other activities such as grooming and cleaning the stalls. That is, until she helps quiet a runaway horse(named Andrews) Andrews's owner, an upperclassman called Vivian, becomes jealous and sends the horse to the slaughter house. When Rin's great aunt finds out, she makes an arrangement with the school principal that she keep the horse in an effort to save him. Rin is ecstatic and works hard to restore the horse to his previous splendor.

A young girl shows up the the aunt's palace. She is a distant relative who was sent by her mother to estrange Rin and make a place for herself in the aunt's heart. Of couse, this is hidden agenda and Rin, always kind, convinces the aunt to allow the girl to stay. The aunt agrees; while she doesn't like the girl's mother, she is after all family. Sophie (the cousin) then attempts one plot after the other to make Rin look bad. Eventually though, Rin's tender heart wins Sopie over and she stands up to her mother. She leaves the mansion, but on very good terms with Rin and her Aunt.

While this is happening, one day, a young man shows up at Rin's school. He is a magnificent rider and all the girls gather around to watch, including Rin and the captain of the girl's equestrian team, Vivian. The young man notices Rin, and much to everyone's surprise, approaches her. When he comes close enough, she joyously sees that he is Edward, the younger of the Bryton brothers and her childhood friend. He had come for an equestrian meeting held at the boys school.

Edward's reappearnce in the series sets the it off in a whole new direction. Vivian, who already hated Rin, is now jealous because she likes Edward, but he only has eyes for Rin. He frequently visits his friend(Phillip) at Rin's school as an excuse to see her, even if it means sneaking out of his boarding school. When it is announced that even freshman would be allowed to join the school's horse race; a big event because it determines who will join the national, he is there to give her pointers. When she is chosen as an alternate, his older brother, Arthur, shows up to congratulate her. Much to Edwards dismay (and mine^_^) her reaction to seeing Arthur is much warmer than it was to seeing him (she runs up and gives the guy a huge, ten second hug). Admitting to himself that she has a crush on his older brother, he withdraws, saying that he has early morning practice. Next morning his distraction causes him to miscalculate a jump and he falls from his horse, breaking his leg. In the hospital Arthur talks with Edward about his feelings towards Rin, (during the fall, a brooch that Edward had purchased for Rin falls). He returns it to him and apologises; encouraging him to give Rin the brooch as soon as possible.

Note: Here's the triangle: Edward loves Rin. Rin loves Arthur. Arthur loves Sarah. Sarah loves Arthur.

Anyway, due to the fall, Edward can't join the national show. Later, an old villian shows up: Mary, the Baroness's daughter. After George broke off the engagement, the baroness moved to Switzerland with her kids. Mary now comes back to England to visit, but decides to enroll in Rin's school; to torture her, no doubt, but she also has a new purpose: to win the coveted school prize given to whomever honors the school with her acheivements, and to win Arthur away from the two sisters (it was always her wish to have the young count's heart).

She gains two of her goals easily enough. George has finally saved enough money to buy back the Marble Manor; he just has to deliver a final shipment of goods. Unfortunately, the warehouse containing the goods is set on fire and all the goods burn. Mary finds out about this through her grandfather, who also has his heart set on purchasing the Manor. She uses this information to get to Arthur. The Bryton brothers are inivited to a welcoming party for Mary. Separate invitations are sent out to the two and in Arthur's invite, she sets up a meeting with him. She tells him of the fire and that it would be impossible for George to get the insurance money in time to pay off his debt. Shocked, he states that he didn't know. She tells him that Rin doesn't know either, that is, she hasn't told her yet. Arthur angrily asks what she would gain if she told Rin. She them offers him a deal: if he agrees to be her date at the party, she will keep the information away from Rin. He reluctantly agrees, knowing that Rin will be hurt when she sees him with Mary, but thinking that she'll be more hurt if she found out of her father's troubles.

Arthur doesn't tell Edward anything about this. Edward is unable to go to the party because of his leg. His friend(Phillip) calls him as a favor to Vivian, asking him to come to the party for her sake. He tells him that he would rather not deal with her, and mentions that Arthur is going to the party. Phillip replies that of course Arthur is coming, for he is Mary's date. Edward is enraged at these news, thinking how could Arthur be Mary's date, when he knows Rin's feelings. He takes a taxi to the party, which is being held in Vivian's mansion. At the party, Rin is ecstatic at being invited, thinking maybe Mary is trying to be nice to her; she is also wondering who could be Mary's date. When Mary shows up with Arthur, Rin is crushed. She runs out of the mansion into the backyard and cries against a tree. Edward shows up the party, in normal clothes, with his crutch. Vivian is happy that he made it, but it doesn't last. He opens the door, shouting for his brother. As he slowly walks up to his brother, his furious eyes make the guests move away. He speaks forcefully to his brother, tears of fury in his eyes: "I told you that I'd do anything to make Rin happy, and that I'd never forgive anyone who hurts her, even if it's my brother. EVEN IF IT'S YOU, ARTHUR!" He then drops his crutch and punches his older brother, who falls down from the impact. Everyone is shocked and from that day, the once inseperable brother's stopped being on speaking terms.

Mary notices Vivian's love for Edward and her resulting hate for Rin. She moves on to her next plan to get rid of any competition for the school prize. She convinces Vivian to race Rin; "to put her in her place and to force her to drop out of the race". At the same time, she breaks her promise to Arthur and tells Rin of her father's problem. She nonchantly states that her grandfather's influence can help Rin's father, but to talk to her grandfather, she has a condition: Rin has to win agianst Vivian in a race. Knowing that the trainer would never allow such a race, it is set up secretly outside of school, at dawn. Mary then anonymously calls Phillip, Edwards friend who is the Captian of the boys's equestrian team, and Vivian's childhood friend. She tells him about the race. He in turn, calls the trainer who calls the principal. Phillap also calls Edward and tells him of the race. Phillip and the trainer arrive at the track, the Principal and Rin's aunt arrive shortly after them. During the race, Rin's rein breaks, and she almost falls. She manages to hold on and continues. A bit before they cross the finish line, Edward arrives and calls out to Rin. Vivian looks towards him and the rising sun gets in her eyes; the distraction resulting in a tie. It also results in Vivians temporarily loss of control. She falls from the horse and is injured.

The scandal is big. Mary got what she wanted. Rin and Vivian are both in trouble with the school for having the race; Rin is suspended from the school and Vivian is in the hospital. Both refuse to talk of why they held the race. Edward tries to ask Rin about her reason; insisting that it had to be Mary who was at the track though she didn't have anything to do with the equestrian club. He finds a newspaper clipping of warehouse fire with Rin and guesses that Mary used this information against Rin. He goes to visit Vivian in the hospital, asking her to use her conscience, and begging her to help ease Rin's situation. She is moved by his words and tells the principal that she will take full responsibility for the accident. She visit's Rin in her home to tell her the good news, and encourages her to do her best in the upcoming race since Vivian's arm was broken, she can no longer participate and Rin, as the alternate, takes her place).

Rin is ecstatic. Mary is furious. Her plan backfired and now Rin was officailly listed to participate in the race. Her one consolation, is that if she wins the tennis tournament, she'll be the one to win the school's prize. Meanwhile, Edward calls up his brother Arthur and the two have a talk, in which Edward tells Arthur of Mary's latest scam. Arthur is aghast upon learning that Rin found out of her father's warehouse. He then tells Edward of his deal with Mary, explaining that he did it to protect Rin. Edward aplogises, and the two make up.

The time for the tennis tournament arrives. Mary loses. Miserably. The equestrian club members on the other hand, are very happy. The news of the tennis teams' loss means the a member of the Equestrian club will win the prize. Vivian gets an odd feeling; thinking of how far Mary will go to win; she is sure that Mary was the one who cut Rin's rein before their race, that was why the rein broke. Feeling that Mary will surely backlash from her loss, she gives Phillip a message for Edward: protect Rin from Mary.

Mary is enraged. She was confident that she will win. Now however, all her plotting was for nothing. True to Vivian's premonition, she sets a new goal for herself: to stop Rin from winning at all costs. She sets up a meeting with Rin. At the meeting, she tells Rin that she talked with her grandfather, asking him to help Rin's father. But there is a complication: Mary's grandfather was expecting her to win the school's prize. He was shocked when she didn't and he would be furious if Rin did. If Rin won the prize, then Mary's grandfather will stop helping helping George. Rin is shocked. Mary tells her that she will have to chose, she either races and wins the prize, or drops from the competition to help her father.

Sophie, Rin's cousin, had come over to celebrate her birthday with Rin and her great aunt. She overhears Rin's talk with Mary. The next day, she asks her about the discussion and Rin explains the situation to her. Sophie feels sorry for Rin and wants to tell the Aunt about it, but Rin makes her promise to not say anything. That day of Sophie's birthday party arrives. Sarah, Arthur, Edward and all Rin's friends at the equestrian club are there, amongst other friends. All Rin can think of, however is the decision she has to make. She never comes down for the party. Sophie, the aunt, Sarah, Arthur and Edward all go up to look for her. She isn't in her room, and her dress is on the bed. Sophie then bursts crying telling them of Rin's problem. Edward starts to leave, saying that he will go look for her. When Sophie wonders where Rin could have gone, Edward and Arthur share a knowing smile.

Rin rides her horse, Andrews to the a hill that overlooks Marble Manor. The hill with the big oak tree had always been her special sanctuary. She thinks of her beloved house, and remembers her dream of celebrating her coming of age in it. She then thinks of her second dream: the school's 'Young Ladies Acheivement' medal. She leans against her favorite horse, saying that she will have to give up the race or she'd be selfish, because, the Manor house is also her sister's and father's dream. Edward voice comes from behind saying that that isn't true. She looks up surprised. Covering her with his jacket, he continues, saying that he doesn't think her father and sister would be saddened by her pursuing her dreams. He tells her that she isn't selfish, and that her family wants to see her happy; that they love her very much. To his suprise, she disagrees. She says that she also loves her family and wouldn't be saddened to give up the prize if it makes everyone happy.

It is dark when they get back home. Everyone is relieved to see Rin. After she apologizes to them, she cheerfully announces that she chose to drop out of the race. Everyone is shocked.

Edward and Arthur are on their way home. They talk of her decision. Edward says that he knows her; she won't change her mind. Arthur wonders if there is a solution. Edward then points out that one would be if George was able to get money. Edward suddenly orders the driver to stop. He jumps out of the car saying that he wants Rin to race. Arthur asks him where he's going. He answers that he's going to get the money; he winks and runs off.

Edward visits Vivian in her home. They are on good terms now, and she teases him at first, saying that she is very happy he visited her. When he awkwardly searches for a response, she says that she is only teasing and she knows he came to her on Rin's behalf. She asks him what she might do for him. He asks her, since her father is a bank manager, if he can loan Rin's father some money. She agrees to ask her father. He thanks her.

Vivian does talk with her father, but he roughly tells her to not meddle in his affairs. What she doesn't know, is that Mary's grandfather is using his influence to make it hard for George to get his insurance, as well as a loan from anywhere.

Next day, Vivian sees Rin approach Mary. She follows them when they go to talk in trophy room and overhears Rin telling Mary that she will tell the trainer that she's dropping out of the race.

When Rin goes to the Equestrian club, she finds Vivian waiting for her. Vivian tells her to get changed and go practice. Rin stammers that she decided to quit. Vivian cuts off. She asks Rin if she told this to the trainer or the principal. When Rin says no, the captain of the team smiles kindly and asks Rin that she wait a day before letting anyone else know. Rin answers that she promised Mary to tell everyone today. Vivian responds that she will take care of Mary, and again asks that Rin gives her a day. She tells Rin to practice as normal and not tell anyone else about it.

That afternoon, Vivian visits Mary. She tells Mary to not meddle with the equestrian club's business. Mary is surprised. Vivian continues that she especially wants her to stay away from Rin, at least till after the race. Mary then carelessly says that she doens't like being told what to do, and that what she does has nothing to do with Vivian. Vivian harshly responds that, if that is the case, then she will tell the principal about the rein. Mary's is shocked. Vivian states that Mary is the one who arranged the race between herself and Rin, and that she cut Rin's rein so that it would break during the race. Mary doesn't give in, asking Vivian if she can prove it. Vivian states that Cathy, a member, kept the rein and that she saw Mary cut it. Mary is aghast. Vivian threatens to tell the principal about it. Mary stubbornly replies that she doesn't care, she'd leave the school. The Captain then cooly replies that even if she left, she would leave a soiled reputaion behind. Mary is then forced to promise Vivian that she will stay away from Rin. Pleased, Vivian bids her farewell. However, then instant she leaves, Mary calls her grandfather, who is a major client in Vivian's father's bank.

Vivian arrives home, at the same time that Edward comes over to see her. As they walk in together, Vivian's father comes to her. He tells her that he got a call from Mary's grandfather and scolds her heavily for what she did. When he notices Edward, Vivian introduces them. Impressed with Edward, her aplogises for losing his temper, saying that his daughter did something stupid. Edward replies that he is the one who asked Vivian to talk to Mary. Vivian argues that she would have done it anyway, and her father leaves, disgusted. She follows him and they sit down to talk. Phillip and Cathy(the member who kept the rein, also Vivian's cousin) arrive at Vivian's house and join the discussion. They soften Vivian's father, but he only agrees to help when he sees his daughter cry, as she admits that she wants to help Rin because she is a better person than she is. He is touched and the young peoples' mission is accomplished.

Note: I'm tired of writing "Vivian's father". His name is Spencer. I'm also tired of writing "Mary's grandfather". His name is Reynolds. I'll be using these names from now on so don't get confused.

Next day, Vivian tells Rin that her father (Spencer) will take care of everything and that she shouldn't drop out. Mary knows that her game is almost over and wants out. She goes to her grandfather at his company and tells him that she wants to go back to Switzerland. When he protests she says that Rin is treating her badly. He then says that if the girl is that insolent, he'll speak direclty to the principal and ask him to expel her. A secretary comes in announcing that Spencer arrived to talk with Reynolds on an important matter. When Spencer says to let him in, Mary quickly leaves the office. The two talk and Spencer tries to convince him to stop pressuring the insurance companies. At one point, Edward bursts into the office. He tells Reynolds that the entire equestrian team is here to ask him one favor. They go to the window, and see that the club members are outside holding posters with various pleas: help rin, let her join the race, etc. Astonished at Spencer's risking his bank business for one girl, and the clubs gathering, he agrees to cease his hold on the insurence company, on one condition: that Rin wins the national steeplechase.

*cracks tired fingers* onto the finale:

Everyone shows up for the race. Rin's family is sitting together, and all are ecstatic when the grandfather shows up (I guess when your grandaughter is in a race that could determine your family's future, you have no choice but to attend). Spencer and Reynolds sit together, with a morose Mary in tow. Sophie shows up with her mother(they are finally at peace). Edward is sitting alone, looking at the brooch he had bought long before for Rin. Arthur surprises him by appearing next to him. Smiling, he tells Arthur that he decided to give it to her when she goes back to Marble Manor.

The competitors take the course, each at a time. Those who make mistakes: for example take a rung down, are eliminated. Rin does the course perfectly, as does Cathy, and both become eligible for the final race.

Note: Cathy, Vivian's cousin, is also a freshman, and was chosen to be in the race back when Rin was still an alternate. She sees Rin as worthy competition and was always nice to her, even back when Vivian hated Rin.

The race is on. By the time all the brush jumps are cleared, Rin, who started out last, has almost caught up to Cathy. The two have a speed duel to the finish line. Rin asks more from her horse, and she finishes first, less than a length ahead of Cathy. Everyone is screaming from happiness, the prinicpal shakes hands with the trianer, extremely pleased with the outcome. The competitors congratulate Rin good naturedly. Sarah calls out to Rin from the sidelines. When she sees a prominent, aged man amongst her family members, she blinks and walks her horse over to them. She realizes it is her grandfather. She stops in front of him, gets down from the horse and takes off her cap. He congratulates her, saying that she is truly his grand daughter. She hugs him fiercly and cries from happiness. Her family is delighted, and Edward and Arthur watch, extremely happy for her.

Note: There was a scene here cut from my tapes(stupid editing!!) I was told that in the scene, Edward gives Rin the brooch but I'm not sure.

Next, Rin is given the coveted medal at the award ceromony in her school. Vivian claps for her serenely, with no regrets at all.

Rin runs out happily from the school, her father and sister are waiting oustide for her. They congratulate her, and the next scene shows the three of them riding a car, going back to their home: Marble Manor. At their house, Rin's father gives her jewelry box, in the shape of a carriage, that had been her mother's. She opens it with the golden key (which she had always worn on a chain) that her father gave her after her mother's death. Inside, she finds a tiara, and some jewels. As she raises the tiara, light flashes around her.

She and her Sarah are wearing gowns and are laughing as they are rushing to a carriage. Arthur and Edward are there and each helps his girl into the carriage. White horses draw the magical carraige away. It stops at a long staircases, and Rin climbs it. She stops, looks at the sceen and thanks the veiwers for watching, saying that she'll keep climbing until she becomes a real lady.

The End....

Not really, there is a sequel series called "Hello, Lady Lynn" but I haven't seen it. Anyone know where I can find it, please tell me and I'll be forever grateful.)

*Special thanks to Yas(may I call you that?) and Lawrence from Anime Miners for subbing the movie. You guys are the best (right up there with the TechnoGirls ^_^) and I can't wait to see it!!!
