Hitomi Kanzaki was a typical high school girl, until a vision of a young man battling a dragon becomes a reality. Her life changes dramatically. She was drawn into a strange vortex with the young man, Van of the Fanella Empire, and they are sent to another dimensional world called Gaea. They find themselves under attack from the Evil Zaiback Empire. The secrets lie in the Escaflowne (a "gymelef" aka, a mecha, a transformer like robot that humans can pilot).
