The story takes place when the medieval era had collapsed and shifting towards the modern era. The population had increased and many virgin forests had been cut down There still remained many ancient forests inhabited wh black forests of evergreen trees and animals that were huge and wide and could understand the human language. The animals fought against humans who invaded their home. These were mostly deer, boars, and mountains wolves that were feared as Raging Gods. The protagonist is Ashitaka, a descendant of a royal family the Emishi tribe. The Emishi had been defeated by the Yamato government and were living in a hidden mountain village for hundreds of years. He was put under a curse of death by a boar God who had become "mononoke" out of anger and hatred. Ashitaka started on a journey to cure his curse. He visited a Western country and wound up in a heroic battle between the Raging Gods and Humans. Eboshi Gozen was leading the Tatara Iron Making Group. She wanted to destroy the forest to have a rich lang for the people. She accepted the outcast and created a humanistic society that makes iron. San, had been raised by a mountain wolf (God). San and the Gods fought against the Tatara group Each side believed their case was just. Eboshi Gozen wanted to cut the forest down so the humans can live. The Gods tried to protect their forest so the animals could live. Ashitaka was not sure which side he should take. Also the Samurais were after the head of the Shishi God which had the power of eternal youth, entered into the picture. It is now a three way battle. |
