| why? i went through a LOT of ideas for halloween but every single one seemed like it would be too complicated to get done in a month, especially with things like school on the side. a little before ndk, i ordered a pair of white vinyl mary janes with 6.5" heels (they arrived the day before i was leaving for ndk! XD talk about timing!) mainly for gothic lolita purposes, but also because i figured they'd be useful for mana cosplay. i was thinking of his madrigal outfit, but that fell into the "too complicated" pile. that's when this idea came to mind. ^^; these were among the first pictures i saw of mana and i thought they were just damn cool. ^^ the more i thought about this costume, the more i realized it was the perfect choice for halloween. it was cheap, simple, low-matienence, and fun. ^_^ |

| how? dress- this project got off to a slightly rocky start. the first pattern i picked (a ladies jacket pattern) was soon realized to be far too complicated to alter. so i did some shopping around and wound up getting a pattern for an actual nurse's uniform. i altered it by lengthening it into a dress, adding a collar, and adding lining. i used basic white cotton for the dress and white satin for lining. hat- originally, the day before halloween, i was going to buy a nurse's hat from hot topic. but they wound up having none left so i managed to whip one up by myself in fifteen minutes. (thank god--i probably would've paid twenty bucks for hot topic's POS.) i made a pattern for it by utilizing the good ol' "hold computer paper to my head and cut it until it looks right" method. i made it using scrap white cotton and left over stich-n-tear. everything else- i already owned the gloves, tights, and shoes (obviously!), and a few weeks before halloween i got bangs so i wouldn't have to hassle with a wig. ^^;; also, i didn't want to experiment with putting blood on my uniform, so in order to get that suicidal look, i wore a glove on one hand, and put a bunch of band-aids on my other wrist. ^^ |

| thoughts i'm really proud of this costume. ^_^ it could be my obsession with that clean, uniform look, but i really do love this outfit. i think it really resembles mana's, even if mine is a little too short. ;-; the thing that makes me sad about this costume, though, is that it was really snowy and icy on halloween, so it was too dangerous for me to wear my platform shoes! (which was the entire reason i made the costume in the first place. ><) so, i wore my mother's white reeboks and wound up not breaking my leg from slipping on ice. ^^ regardless, i'd love to wear this costume to a convention to see what sort of reaction it gets. this outfit is beautifully low-matienence, so it'd be perfect for scorching summer cons. ^^ |
