why? i needed to let out the skank within? *l* no, actually, i first got introduced to DOA courtesy my colorado cosplay club, who decided to sit down and play it at one of our meetings. i decided to try my luck, and played a few rounds as lei-fang. why? because she was cute and chinese! i'll admit, i sucked some major ass at the game but i still had fun. when i got home, i wrote her down as a possibility for cosplay. she slipped out of my mind for a while, until dormouse conjured up one of the baddest ayane costumes i've ever seen. i started thinking about it more and more and then finally when out and picked up the game for myself. i got addicted and decided "i will have a lei-fang costume for AX!"

how? dress: i used a simple mandarin style dress pattern using red satin for fabric. the only altering i did to the pattern was taking it in slightly (so it would hug my body like lei-fang's) and i made the slits go farther up (a lá lei-fang, of course.) i edged it with gold lamé and added the gold buttons. for the phoenix, i put some muslin over my dress form and then put the dress on it (just in case any paint soaked through.) i gathered up a load of reference pictures and sketched out the top half of the bird on the dress. then i painted it in, using gold craft paint that was approved for fabric. for the bottom half, i more or less free-handed it. ^^ i let the dress dry on my dress form, so in case there was any stiffening of the fabric, it would at least stiffen into my form. cuffs: i took some measurements of my wrist and then cut out rectangles of red satin. i edged those in gold lamé as well. i free-handed the gold designs on them with the same paint as for the phoenix. they fasten with velcro.

thoughts this was a beautifully simple project. no fancy pattern altering or anything. ^^ the bird did take a long time (from about 9PM to 2AM) but i had a real blast painting it. i took some artistic liberties with the design, but i think it turned out great. it was well received when i wore it to the denver cosplay picnic. i got a few questions and comments about it, which is always a plus! ^^ the only not-so-great part of this costume is how scandalous it is! it was windy downtown at the picnic and i'm pretty sure i flashed at least a few hundred people!

pictures getting ready to duke it out! a nice shot of my phoenix and my pasty white legs.. sitting pretty, with my ass hanging out. we look all bright and colourful! yay! me, attempting to work the buell theatre.. what can i say? we were down by the buell, so i figured i'd get a shot next to the greatest musical of all time! (uh, that'd be "les miz," not "some like it hot." ^^;)
