What is beyond the next hill, and how can I get there?

Schlachtschiff SETI has been mothballed. Consider this site omake.

What is SETI@home?

The SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home) Project is based on the theory that it's much more efficient to ping the outer reaches of space by radio telescope than to go there physically. Without getting overly geeky about it, the project takes raw data in the form of radio signals in the 1.42 to 1.64 GHz frequency range (known as the 'watering hole,' based on frequencies emitted by the chemical elements of water), and analyses it for signs of life - intentionally broadcast or incidental.

The data comes from the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico, a dish measuring 1,000 feet across, the largest such device on our planet. It's coming in at about 35GB per day, which is broken down into 250K chunks for detailed analysis.

This is where you, future-minded citizen, come in. We can only listen to one radio station at a time, focusing in on but a fraction of the stellar noise. Space is a big place. The number of processors needed to sort through all the information is exponential. No man, alone, can complete this great task. But, humans build communities. The SETI@home Project allows us to search a broader field, computers linked together over the internet, cyphering through the cosmic radio. Together, we can do anything.

Do I have to be online while my computer is filtering SETI data?

No, all cyphering is done offline. You only need to go online to send back your results and download new data units.

What's a schlachtschiff?

"Schlachtschiff" is German for battleship or dreadnought, but for "Martian Successor Nadesico" fans, you will recognize it as a distinctive part of the series's original title, "Meteor Schlachtschiff Nadesico".

Who are the characters at the top of the pages and the boy in the link?

The charas found in the title graphics are all SF and / or anime charas who demonstrate the principles of Schlachtschiff SETI...

Quatre Raberba Winner - The blonde-haired boy in the link. From "Gundam Wing", Quatre is a boy who's eyes are not on the victory to be had at the end of the day, but on the one which will come in 20 years.

Citan Uzuki - Atop this very page, Citan is from SQUARE's "Xenogears". Piloting the Heimdal and then the omnigear El Fenrir, Citan is a warrior poet. Playing the part of augur and sage, he knows arcane Truths that should not be known. Kept close is his hidden past and true name -- Hyuga.

Yurika Misumaru - Over the "How to Join" area, the captain of the High Mobile Battleship ND-001 Nadesico smiles. Hailing from "Martian Successor Nadesico", Yurika, despite her young age, is a strong captain, her eyes forever on the horizon.

Krelian - The pale eyes of Krelian watch atop the links. From "Xenogears", the brilliantly cursed Krelian is the man who would kill god.

Why do I have to give you my password to sign up?

When you go to SETI@home to sign up, it asks for your password. The password is requested by the SETI system... not me. The password it asks for is a series of numbers that the SETI system assigns you. To find your SETI password, click here.
